Once had a brother-in-law who worked in the HVAC system for 40 yrs. He once had an elderly customer in her 80's who had an oil furnace that couldn't be fired because of excessive oil lying in the fire box. She had nowhere to go that night to stay warm, he took her to a motel, rented her a room for the night. He was a Saint if there ever was one. This guy reminds me of him.

Personally, I would check transformer voltage output (24v) with output wires REMOVED. Bcuz... a dead short anywhere on the furnace 24v system can give you a zero-voltage reading at the transformer. You can suspect a bad transformer by merely touching it. A "dead" transformer many times can be either VERY warm (short circuit on the output, as mentioned) or plumb-cold-- open transformer. While ur removing the 4" jct box cover to replace the transformer you could then verify your incoming 115v power supply without having to remove the furnace power supply toggle switch. Save you a step and a little time. It is unusual that you would have 2 inoperative components but it does happen. I'm glad to see you orientated the new gas valve so a person can work on it. I have a downflow furnace and the installer didn't bother to orientate the gas valve from upside down. The valve works but obviously it is a pain to make any adjustments or take readings.
@johntrauger68
@johntrauger68 2 жыл бұрын
Not to break balls of any worker but plumbers, and HVAC technicians are not electricians or more so, control systems technicians. They can do the job obviously, but sometimes electrical systems can have elusive problems that require a deeper understanding of what's going on. Your description of how to check the control transformer is fundamental and should be understood. May I add, the same approach should be used when troubleshooting DC controls as a short circuit in the output of modern power supplies will activate "crow-bar" protection driving the output voltage to zero without blowing fuses etc. I've seen more than one time people hunting for a replacement PS only to be stunned after changing and the problem reemerges. For what it's worth, I've worked over 50 years in industrial controls mostly in power houses, water treatment , and manufacturing plants as a control systems/instrument technician with an ISA certification. I was also an aircraft electrician in the Navy. I currently teach motor control/PLC's/automation at a tech school in Florida. I've seen some weird shit go down that had us scratching our heads for a good long while... Good call Scott.

Good job. As a Gas Co residential/commercial tech, my first step when I saw a weak and lazy pilot flame was to just tap the pilot assembly with a screwdriver to knock out the dust, usually restored full and strong burning flame to the pilot. Then use the hose to blow out any soot caused by the lazy flame. A tap would have probably taken care of that without you having to adjust the pilot flow to account for a slight restriction in the orifice. I have run into situations where someone tried to adjust the pilot flow without cleaning out the restriction in the pilot and after tapping out the restriction, now the pilot was over-gassed and blowing. I would then readjust the pilot back to a normal flow to impinge on the t-couple. I would cut a short piece of 1/4" copper or aluminum tubing and stick it in the end of your blow hose. The tip of the tubing should be bent slightly to get into the pilot hood. I put in a short piece of 1/4" acrylic pipe as the mouth piece in the other end of the hose, instead of putting the nasty rubber hose in my mouth. I would 'fix' inop fireplace gas logs and wall furnaces that used PG9's with a sooty and lazy pilot flame with one tap. Pilot flame became strong, waited for a a moment for the thermopile to heat up and 10 seconds later, gas log fires right up. After a quick cleaning and a safety check, in and out in less than 10 minutes.

I used to disconnect the pilot line from the combination calve and attach CO2 cylinder to blow out the dirt. It worked 90 % of the time. Still replaced the thermocouple as preventative maintenance. Never had a callback after that.

I learned a long time ago if you have a blown transformer there is always a reason for it, I always try to put a in line fuse on the the low voltage to if it doesn’t already have one. That way your not changing transformers more than once.

Id rather have a new furnace with this build quality over most of the modern furnaces built today. Straight forward, and easy to service. My dad was a heavy smoker. I never took it up, myself. Our air filters were always brown.

Great video. I had to laugh. I was expecting you to say bad switch. I like the driver! I had a problem with my AC compressor. I checked the circuit breaker, one side 115 volts the other side 3 volts. Replaced the breaker and bob's your uncle it worked great. I opened the old breaker and found a dead spider and and a great web nest on the one side. I'm an old man too but maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. Some people think they are using an old cast iron stove to stay warm

If that guy runs into trouble installing the PTO on his tractor, he can call Ivan over at Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics to get it working. If Ivan can rewire a Genie boom lift that was hacked up by many "attempted" repairs, I think he can get a PTO installed and working on a John Deere.

I'm wondering how he got the massachusetts guy for a pto parts. I delivered oil to a guy that had a old Ford tractor. Probably from the 50s. May he rest in peace. But he didn't do any internet stuff to get it going. I told him to ask his kids for help. Long story short. When he passed away i meet his son. And he told me that they did try to get it working again. But it was hard to find parts on the internet.
