The AIDs epidemic might be the reason because of their partners dying since the 80s to the early 90s was the time where AIDs were killing a lot of LGBTQ+ people and people in general. It was a really bad time for the LGBTQ+ community. There was even quilts made to honor the people who died during that time. I think the quilts are in Washington D.C. but I don’t know. It wasn’t a long time ago but it’s not well known.

This guys lived during the 80’s HIV epidemic, I would like to hear them talk about those times. The new generations need to know what the gay community went through back then so they can appreciate what they have now!
5 жыл бұрын
I could talk...diagnoses in 1987, buried my first lover from HIV after 14 years in '93 then buried my second lover after 20 years in 2012. Everything in between was surreal. People shunned us. Tying to get home health care for my first husband was not easy, they went screaming as soon as they knew what he had as though it were leprosy. Then trying to get medical care at that time in NH the doctors would not accept us because they claimed they were "family" practices. All the while dealing with homophobia at work, lost me two jobs at a time when suing someone for that would never have flown. These men have history...and we were the forefront of the Stonewall revolution which is why now gay men and women can now go to a gay bar LEGALLY and not have raided by cops 'cause you were dancing with another man.

I don’t think he’s saying that it’s “gone” just that the kind of panic response from the public isn’t as fierce as it was back then. My Mom was a nurse in the 80s and 90s and told me some sad sad stories of even doctors shunning patients and refusing to give them care out of misplaced fear. It was very much a crisis in every sense of that word. So many people suffered because of it.

@@yakigesher-zion7289 I think it shows more about the unwillingness of society at large to be compassionate towards a group of "different" individuals who, though they were of course different, were also human--and dying. One of humanity's greatest crimes is how the American government and health system reacted towards the AIDs crisis. Restricting sex had nothing to do with it; homophobia had everything to do with it.
@yakigesher-zion72895 жыл бұрын
A Superior Cat the AIDS crisis was handled very poorly, no doubt about that, but my point is that it serves as a reminder that unrestricted hedonism, gay or straight (many straight people were affected too) has severe consequences. We can’t just get away with doing whatever we want whenever we want, there will be consequences. If we put our hands on a burning stove, we will burn our hand.
@catsuperior5 жыл бұрын
@@yakigesher-zion7289 Hedonism? Lol who the fuck cares how much sex others are having? What a silly thing to say; sounds kinda fundamentalist. The AIDs crisis didn't happen due to too much sex. It happened because a) AIDs is transmitted more easily via anal sex (and the versatile nature of roles in gay sex) and b) the administration was homophobic. That's it.
