You can't go wrong with old german generators or any old generator for that matter as long as she is in good working order. I would most definately grab it and if no transport was available at the time, have the scrappers put a "sold" sign on it to come back later.

I think one of the phases in the rotor is roasted, but I will bring it home anyway, $200 is a steal. and they are happy to sit on it for a while, that MB engine has been there for months with my name on it, years prior to that LOL.

It would be an awsome restauration. Didn´t recon the brand, but a quick search, reveals its called Kämper. It seems that the engine is started with a small gasoline carb and then you can switch it to diesel.
@Aussie506 жыл бұрын
Interesting, this one has direct air inlet and glowplugs, no sign of gasoline carb, must have been an old design since these were used on dozers and other earthmoving machines
@ErikMinecraft6 жыл бұрын
Maybe there where talking about an older model, but the last engines (at least in Germany) where made in 1955 as far as i found it on some forums and wiki . And I found some other Pictures, one with a flyer from probaly 1956? It shows 2 engines, one a 6 cyl and a smaller 4 cyl, with the base, and rad that looks similar to that one you found. But I am really not familliar with this brand, even though I am a german that likes old engines :D
@douro206 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, Kaemper engines were used primarily in construction equipment and small locomotives. They were once part of the DEMAG group and existed from 1901 to 1955. From the configuration of the injectors I am quite certain this uses small removable prechambers known as energy cells, which were not widely used except in older non-turbo Case/David Brown diesels like the 401 inline-6.
@Aussie506 жыл бұрын
Interesting!, thank-you very much, I found nothing on it. Interesting about the engine, I was wondering what was going on in the heads since it has the glowplugs and injectors in an odd place.

These Kämper mid 1930s pre war Diesels (System Lanova?) were used in post war Germany as optional upgrade for thirsty US American V8 gasoline powered trucks and vehicles when sold by the US Army to private german trucking companies, factories and farmers as surplus (Please dont scrap anything, even not the leaky brass radiator its a pre war wehrmacht truck radiator) : www.ebay.de/itm/Prospekt-Kaemper-80-PS-Diesel-Motor-fuer-Ford-BB-und-V8-LKW-ca-1951-2-Seiten-/301920140079

the radiator has brass tanks but the core fins are actually steel, I imagine the tubes are brass or copper tho.
@Schlipperschlopper6 жыл бұрын
Yes these are HQ hand crafted radiators for tropical use (Fine vertical and horizontal net core) ! Never scrap such a superb german made army radiator! (and just watch the cast aluminium radiator fan, this deserves to be polished, very similar fans were used in Maybach engines!) You wont find something similar HQ in todays cheaply made generators, there are very good radiator shops maybe a retired welder / solderer could also repair this for much less money compared to regular workshop, this wonderfull and very rare gen set deserves a good restauration, here in entire germany I have not seen a similar KÄMPER / SIEMENS / AEG genset since many many years (20?)...those are collector items, Kämper is very rare even in germany because there were much more Mercedes or M.A.N. powered gen sets during WW2 and early post war time. P.S. if you need new ceramic "screw in" type fuse holders you can find them here on ebay germany they are cheap and even the voltage- and ampmeter instruments can be found here...please also dont scrap the instrument panel! That entire "thing" looks very much like a backup gen set from an old 1940(?) vessel built in Germany...I just cant explain how this heavy monster otherwise would have found its way to the USA? If its 230V 415V @ 50 HZ its typical European power generator set otherwise it would have been 114 /230 60HZ or something like that ...maybe a GI from the US Army brought this over to the States after leaving Germany? Have you ever asked the scrapyard owner who was the previous owner of this machine? Maybe he can tell you more about the history? I am very curious...sadly I dont live in the States ;-) ,I would love to come over helping you fixing this wonderfull piece of german technology heritage to like new condition...this is definetly not a bulky piece of old rusty scrap metal, you can easily learn this by listening to the specific german BOSCH sound of the starter motor and engine when it wakes up, this heavy Beast says "GUTEN TAG" ;-))) " or something like that not "Konichiwa" like the Japanese or Chinese toy starters :-)))
@Aussie506 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I am not in the US tho :P. I am in Australia. I wonder how it got here!. the rad will definitely be repaired tho, I aint buying a new one :P.. I did a lot of research on google focused on German results and found a lot of old adverts, and stuff, its definitely a pre-war design engine!. . the raditor does not look like a truck rad since the top tank is flat, not sloping away from the filler cap.
@Schlipperschlopper6 жыл бұрын
Oh I see, okay that makes sense, that explains the gensets specs: the machine is 230V / 415V 50 HZ : in Australia the electricity is like in Europe English/German/French 50HZ 220v-380v in private homes and 230v /400v in industrial systems, well this machine surely came with a vessel to australia, the generator is a wartime Siemens type according to the looks but it has been rebuilt during the 1960s by a 3rd party repairshop (Not a Siemens service shop) so they replaced the Siemens logo with their own unbranded plate. Kämper used to be a well known vessel engine and generator manufacturer for smaller ships, Yachts and trawlers here in 1930s and 40s Germany. Engines up to 6 cyl 120 HP (Fish trawlers and harbour barges) and they made 60 KVA generator sets for the Wehrmacht. I only found a picture of a trailer mounted unit with 6 cyl 90HP Diesel. www.kfzderwehrmacht.de/Hauptseite_deutsch/Anhanger/2-achsige_Anhanger/Maschinensatz_220-380_V_60_kVA/maschinensatz_220-380_v_60_kva.html

Whoa, that's a decent-sized beast! So there's no hope of repairing the mangled trailer? If it just needs axles it wouldn't hurt to ask around for a pair of those in addition to searching for a trailer. Then again, might be hard to repair on-site at the scrapyard, that's an issue. Well, I hope you can find what you need to get it, it looks like an awesome bit of kit to have fun with!
@Aussie506 жыл бұрын
the trailer is a mess, no draw bar either, its a converted boat trailer so I am thinking I will just buy one of the old ones they have there and do the same. turns out its the same trailer it was originally mounted on to start with, they just used the grab to pick it up by the wheels and bent everything
