They grew up in a warm and loving home. Both parents were part time actors, mom working in teaching improv, aerial work, songwriting and homeschool classes. Her dad worked in carpentry. They live in a modest 2-bedroom craftsman house in Highland Park LA. Billie still lives with them. They never had much money and almost lost their house in 2009. Finneas had severe separation anxiety as a child and they all slept in the same bed until he was 10 years old. Then they gave up their bedroom so that Billie would have a room, while they sleep on the Futon in the living room (still do). Billie has multiple learning disabilities and mild Tourettes Syndrome. Both kids were homeschooled. The parents taught them how to play music and songwriting and let them play as much music any time of the day. Billie went to 6 dance classes a week and was part of a competitive dance group, until she tore her muscle off her hip at age 13 while dancing. Finneas gave her a song (Ocean Eyes) to record for her dance teacher to choreograph. They uploaded it to SoundCloud and it took off from there... PS her 12-step reference is tongue in cheek..."is there a 12-step plan for you" , she sings to her crush in the song. She's vegan, doesn't smoke or do any drugs. PPS her strange addictions are "The Office" and Rosarita refried beans... PPPS the ring on Bury a Friend was a recording of her Easy Bake Oven bell.

I heard her say in an interview that her address leaked so they had to relocate. Plus she’s super rich. And her brother is living with his girlfriend now. She’s still with her parents though and they still work together like they always have. She just got way too famous to not be behind a gate somewhere.

The sample on bad guy on the chorus in the background is the “go” sound for foot traffic at lights in my adopted city, Melbourne, Australia. On the 27 club thing, she’s very vocal about not self-medicating... and her family is special. Let’s hope.

I am 61 yrs old and got hooked on Billie from watching her music videos. She has synesthesia (sees notes in color) and storyboards what she wants her videos to look like. Finneas still produces and co writes with her AND she has now started directing her own videos. Billie was home schooled, is vegan and socially conscious. She has had sleep paralysis, depression and suicidal thoughts, which she emotes through her music. I believe expressing herself has helped lift her up and her fans know this and are drawn to her honesty. She is a massively creative artist and a breath of fresh air.

54 years old, discovered Radiohead, during covid after getting tired of 40 years of prog and classic rock, fusion jazz. Incredible depth and beauty which I have not experienced since my Uncle bought me Dark Side of the Moon at the age of 12. This led me to Vinyl Junkies, which led me to Billie Eilish, a stunning talent. Thank you Vinyl Junkies. You have a new friend.

Great to hear you discovered Radiohead after all those years! I listen to quite a bit of music but Radiohead will always be real special to me. I enjoy that each album has very much it's own sound while still sounding like Radiohead. If you'd like to listen to another artist slightly similar I'd recommend "The Acid." They have one album and a soundtrack for a documentary about the world's fascination of bombs which is a good watch while stoned. They are slightly experimental like Radiohead (maybe more like Thom Yorke) but leaning more towards moody atmospheric sounds.

I know I'm 3 years too late but loved this reaction, and I gotta say this: I would love to see a conversation between you and Billie. Doesn't matter if it'd be about music or just life. Because she has the emotional maturity and sincerity of a grown ass woman and you have the openness of a young guy, aware of the importance of the youth and what they have to say. And you both have a similar sense of humour 😂 Was trying to find a reaction to her next album and I couldn't find it and noticed you haven't been posting videos recently. Whatever happened, hope everything's okay with you and your family ❤️

I had heard the name Billie Eilish a few times here and there but never really heard her music. Then I happened to catch her performance of I Love You on SNL (her live performances are mind-blowing). My reaction was instant awe and chills. As a 40 something woman who hasn't connected with a young artist in a long while, she knocked me flat. I have been listening to her two albums almost daily since. I also share the hope (especially as a parent of a young girl) that she stays safe, feels love and can be shielded from the pressures and negativity of the media and industry. I thoroughly enjoyed watching someone else discover Billie who, in my opinion, is the best new artist we've seen in a long time.

Yup, can’t relate to anybody who says this album isn’t good. If someone says they don’t like Billie’s music I will either assume they don’t really understand what music is or that they’ve listened to only a fraction of one song. Or something. It’s just too varied, too truthful, too new yet respectful of the old, too familiar yet fresh, to be disliked. I straight up will mistrust anyone who says they don’t like Billie. The nicest thing I can assume is that they maybe weren’t paying attention. I get the whole opinion is subjective blah blah but nah. If you like music of any kind, you’ll like Billie’s music. That’s why she has fans in their 70s all the way to the teenagers, fans who usually listen to rock, to metal, to hip hop, to country, to reggae, fans who study music, work with music, work in cinematography, people who really know their shit musically and historically and technically are all blown away by her... just seriously. If you pay attention, you’ll like it. I’m actually obsessed with watching people’s reactions to Billie because her fans are so far reaching and varied, that it’s making me wonder if there’s something scientific and biological about her tone of voice and singing that hits in a very human way beyond genre and sound, that combines the layers her synesthesia touches with that of combinations of attention that’s paid to different aspects of music. Because she has full control of the creative process and is truthful and has synesthesia, I think that it hits people in whatever combination they happen to like. For example, there’s this music teacher who is amazed by her creative use of pacing. Then there’s this producer who picked up the seamless combination of ambient details and melody and different beats following the rhythm of the human heart beat. I could go on and on. People who have experienced depression, people who have experienced complicated situations of love, people who have experienced sleep paralysis, body dismorphia, people who can’t dea with the world going to shit, it makes people who feel alone feel less alone, the vulnerability expresses and evokes a sense of both wanting to protect as well as feeling understood, it’s like giving and receiving a really good hug. It’s thought provoking thematically, it’s beautiful and creative and historically musically respectful and I think there’s an innate humanity in this record that is expressed so thoroughly, that it makes me suspect someone of having a certain lack of access to aspects of beauty and emotion and being human, if they don’t like her. Or they didn’t pay attention. Or they’re jealous. I don’t know. I don’t get it. But luckily most people allow her music to stab them in the heart whilst soothing and rattling you up all at once. It’s pretty fucking ridiculous and amazing that so much can be found in a single album. I can honestly say this record reminds me of all the greats - and I agree with your associations.

I just listened to this entire thing. KUDOS! I have to agree with you. I’m in my 50s, and think Billie is amazing. She’s the real deal. No team of writers, no fancy studios, no stylists. It’s all her and her brother. A fun fact: they refuse to auto correct her voice. They may use effects sometimes (like to make it sound underwater or to echo) but they don’t pitch correct her voice. Her brother, Finneas, is four years older than her. I hope you learn ALL the Billie things. LOL That’s really all I can say. She’s genuine. I don’t know if you were doing it on purpose to tease your daughter, but her last name is pronounced EYE-lish. And to put your “Dad mind” at ease a little bit, Billie has openly struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts and self harm, but she says she has been doing MUCH better this year. Thank goodness! Liked, commented and subscribed!

Billie's been raised by Old Soul parents who immersed their children in the arts and have taught both of them well. I love this family. There's a line in "You Should See Me In a Crown" that says "You say 'Come over baby, I think you're pretty' I'm...'Okay, I'm not your baby. If you think I'm pretty...you should see me in a crown"" then the line "Your Silence is My Favorite Sound"...those lines sold me on Billie and her attitude of putting men/boys in their place with their unwanted advances. She is very self-aware and grounded, and I am an absolute 50-something Fan Girl of hers.

Billie became depressed after her injury at age 13. Then she was suicidal at ages 16-17, but with her family's support and therapy, adjusting her tour schedule for more breaks and letting her bring friends along, she has improved and is much better since the beginning of 2019. She says she's finally happy again.

She is a multimillionaire but still lives with her parents at her family home. Her parents came on all her tours, and she is living a relatively normal life considering her circumstances. She was homeschooled her whole life so she isn't a very traditional teenager. She's so musically inclined because her parents are musicians and just grew up around music at all times. Her brother's production skills and her singing make them the ultimate duo. If you haven't listened to her recent single "My Future" I highly recommend it!

Like you I saw her on Hot Ones and I kept getting video recommendations over and over until I finally said fuck it and gave it a shot. I didn't know what to expect, she talked and dressed like a teenage 13 year old boy. I was blown away after the first song, and for some reason I kept digesting everything Eilish. All of these songs were co-written with her brother Finneas, except for When the Party's Over which is wholly his work (he's 4years older) and produced by him in his bedroom. Sometimes most of the lyrics are hers, others are more shared. He sings back up and plays most of the instruments. She plays some guitar and the ukelele on the album, but also plays piano at home. They use many found sounds on their songs and Finneas is a musical adept. The album with the ladder is called Don't Smile at Me. She was 14-15 when that was recorded.

@@VinylJunkies666 Hey Sam, excuse me for piggybacking this old comment but I wanted to make sure you knew about these 2 things: 1. Billie and her dad launched a "radio" show on Apple Music a week or so ago called "Me & Dad Radio" where they play a bunch of tunes that they'd introduced each other to at some point, and which they now both love. They have been sharing new music for many years, so each song comes loaded with anecdotes, memories, and analysis ... and they even sing along sometimes! It's both hilarious and insightful. 2. .Back in November, Billie and Finneas played an intimate acoustic show at Third Man Records. Jack White captured the show direct-to-acetate and pressed around 1,700 copies of a 10-track LP. You don't need me to tell you that you need to get hold of one of these! If that fails, someone has posted the audio to KZbin. Here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHfbdKupnNGHj6M Thanks man, be well!

Billie will NOT be a “one-hit-wonder”. She and her brother, Finneas love so many different eras/genres of music they will only get better than ever and evolve. I’m excited to hear her voice mature and her ability to expand her true talent. The only thing that can hold Billie back is her mental state and welfare which seems to be improving. She’s happier now than she’s ever been and learning to deal with fame better. Thank god she does have a solid family to support her and she seems to be happy with her label and the fact they allow her to be herself and just do her thing. She’s extremely creative, diving into the art of directing her own videos and even editing. I think the expansion will keep her content when given more creative control. She’s unique.

Too funny. Whenever I'm trying to explain the allure of Billie to someone else, I will spend a lot of time articulating many of the same points you mentioned above. But I will almost always conclude with "She's unique," as you did. I mean, she really is. I'd say Finneas is an extraordinary example of a type of human that I already knew existed, whereas it's hard to imagine there's ever been another person who thinks, behaves, projects, evolves, loses-and ultimately wins-in quite the way Billie does. And, artistically, neither would exist without the other. It's a ridiculous ongoing story.

I’m so amused, your rant in Defense of pop music before even listening to Billie who’s not doing any of the things you’re defending. They don’t use auto tune (they use effects but no pitch correction, which is exactly why she sounds as good live as in their studio version), they write and produce everything themselves (her and her brother) in their childhood house, they definitely are artists, not popularity chasers. But I still really appreciated your Defense of teenage taste, popular taste, what is considered good (what each person likes). You’re pretty cool

Your video popped up on my screen today and I watched both of your Billie's EP reactions.. I am so happy you are going through Billie Eilish's music path.. Trust me you will love her art even better when you go through all her videos with her songs. Every song she has made videos of are done by herself.. All the stunts in her videos are real and done by her not using any of CGI. She has been protected by her parents. They are amazing too. You should also check out her singles and Covers she has done. I promise you won't regret even a single ones. I lived your reaction not hesitating to get emotional. I wish I was able to see this when it was going live. But I still enjoyed it a lot!

Hey Youngster, I'm 69 and only knew Billie Eilish existed when I read that this teenager had pretty much swept the important Grammy Awards. I went online to at least hear her music, not thinking I'd be too impressed as I'm not a fan of much of today's popular music. But, I was immediately knocked on the floor by her depth, integrity, creativity, and especially that voice, which sounds much like a jazz singer to me. I grabbed family members in. "Have you heard of this singer? Listen with me." She's an artist that can appeal and CONNECT to all age groups and musical tastes. Her music is timeless.

Ilomilo has been written from her parents perspective. Talks about how parents are protective and they never wanna “let go” of their children. Ilomilo is actually a game where you need to take care of a fictional pet and raise it. What I find amazing is how he picks up his cat during this song and pets it as Billie says “Let you rescue me/ The day I met you/I just wanted to protect you.” Amazing!!

THEY don’t care ..she write and produce too she started write since she was 8, she wrote for other artists too without her brother and she wrote poems too and songs only by herself.. but of course bc their mother had a “songwriters class” so they learned everything about music since they are children that’s why they are “music prodigies” and they are already at the top at only 20 👏🏻

GOOD music is timeless. Billie's music wouldn't have been out of place in the '70s, '80s, or '90s either, Sinatra STILL kicks ass, and today's kids are falling in love with Led Zeppelin. The Song does in fact Remain the Same. The enjoyment of music has nothing to do with age. Remember how great Roddy Frame was at 17-years-old with Aztec Camera's brilliant "High Land Hard Rain" album? As Elvis Costello said, "Roddy's so good it's scary to think what he'll be like at thirty." Such great expectations pressure is crushing to live up to. The point with such young gifted artists as Frame, Eilish, and countless others (Alex Chilton, Stevie Winwood anyone?) isn't where they may go but that they achieved what they did at all. That alone is worthy of celebration and enough for any lifetime.

Stumbled onto this 2 hour and 15 minute listen/review today. Loved it completely and have subscribed. I am 66 years old and have been deeply in love with music for at least 56 of those. I stumbled on Billie and Finneas a couple years ago when I saw this live performance of her doing Michael Jackson's Bad. ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqeZg6dorZuehsk ) It was like nothing I'd ever heard and my musical senses told me something amazing and special as happening. I dove in. Listened to her EP - Don't Smile At Me. Saw her perform live a couple of times with my 23 year old son. Was blown away and found myself eagerly anticipating the release of the album you just listened to. My sense is that she is, for whatever reason, something that comes along less than once in a generation. Having just turned 18, she will shake and shape music, hopefully, for decades to come.

I am old and I love Billie Eilish! She is amazing! Billie still lives at home where she grew up with her parents. She went through a really deep depression for a couple of years. But she wanted to go on because she loved the music and the performing. Her brother Finneas is very protective and her parent's tour with her. Listen to some interviews--she is 12 sometimes and 45 others. Finneas writes with her and is an amazing producer. He's old--like 22. 🧡

Last comment, I swear. Billie (eye)lish Pirate Baird O’Connell is her full name. She was born December 18th 2001, making her 18 years old. When she was 13, her dance teacher asked her and her brother, Finneas, to make a song for them to choreograph a song to. Finneas and Billie decided if they uploaded it on soundcloud it would be easy to send it to their dance teacher. The song was called Ocean Eyes, and it blew up. The song was then put on spotify and they made a music video for it. She then began releasing more music along with her EP, Don’t Smile At Me. Billie suffers from depression, which began with her injury that kept her from dancing. She also has Synesthesia and Tourette Syndrome. In the past two years, She has performed at Coachella, written a bond theme in three days in a tour bus with Finneas and performed it live at the BRIT awards, and has been nominated for six Grammy’s, been the youngest person to be nominated and win the big four, and had won five Grammy’s. She has over 60 million followers on instagram, and her song Bad Guy became a number one hit with more than 800 million views on youtube

What an amazing channel. I LOVE YOU SAM!!! When you had to wipe tears away with your sleave... Damn, thats great music. Don't worry, she broke this 55-year-old guy too... DAMN. I just watched the whole two hours. I love the way you talk about music, I loved watching you discover this amazing artist, it was wonderful. I discovered Billie Eilish when I was searching for Bands doing covers of other bands (I love to see their interpretation sometimes), and I came across Billie Eilish's cover of Michael Jackson's "Bad". HOLY FUCK!!! If you haven't seen that, you must. I had heard her name, but never listened to her music, but after the "Bad" cover I spent the last week pouring over all her music, watching people's reactions to her music, watching her interviews... basically everything I can find about her... WHY? Because this album, and really all her music, is a MASTERFUL... The best word I can use to describe her is AUTHENTIC. All her songs don't sound the same, everyone is different. I love how she starts off the album, and how completely different it is by the end. Its like getting to know someone, at first, you don't give someone everything, it's light (yet still powerful) and as you go along, you see the full picture of the person, in all their complexity. This is a once in a generational talent. I don't say that lightly either. If you want proof of how good she is, watch Alicia Keys (who is amazing) do a cover of Billie's "Everything I wanted", and doesn't even come close to how good Billie's version is.... ALICIA FUCKING KEYS can't do it, that's how fucking amazing this now 19-year-old is. FUCK!!!!
