A lot of people believe “my strange addiction” was about Billie’s addiciton to the show “the office.” She said she’s watched the entire series like 20, 30 times. Rainn Wilson actually went to Billie’s childhood home and sat down at their dining room table and quizzed her on her office knowledge.

Listen before I go was definitely a song about suicide. She did go through a pretty rough patch of her life when she was younger and used to self harm and actually did consider offing herself. She said making that song was her way of dealing with it. She said it was better to write about it than actually doing it.

Listen before I go, I love you, goodbye. It’s in this order on purpose. Listen before I go is really heavy and yeah I agree it’s not a song I can randomly listen to. But I do think that it fits right in with the theme of the nightmare and progression of it during the night. But in the documentary she also talks about how writing listen before I go helped her to not do it. I think that’s quite significant. And very relatable.

Actually, Billie is the one who produced that outro in Bad Guy, that’s why she’s listed as the producer for the song as well as Finneas (and it’s my favourite part of the song, to be honest). She’s also not saying that she “likes bad guys” she’s saying “if you’re going to be all fake and shit I can pretend to be a bad guy too”

Strange that Goodbye didn’t show lyrics. Yes I agree with your interpretation, the end is like she’s waking up and remembering little snippets of different parts of her dreams, going through them from most recent to earliest songs/ dreams, and that’s whoosh it’s like waking up - or, from the perspective of the dream space, disappearing. And technically, it could start over again.

Something not a lot of people pick up on is how the transition from My strange addiction and Bury a friend is “did you like it? Which part?” -> “Billie”. Because that’s the answer, in the next song, Billie is the part we like. At least that’s how this sounds like to me and it’s such a small little details that I think is so cool. Just a small little wink and transition. Since My strange addiction also starts with “No, Billie.” I don’t know, it’s just those small little details that get me really excited about music

Billie started at 14 and her brother 18, they write together and he produces, still only 21 and 25, they are amazing and I still can't wait to see what they have to come. So much talent in a brother and sister, you need to watch her live, you can feel every emotion, they have also done a couple of covers Michael Jacksons Bad, End of the World, and Peggy Lees Fever. They have done so much in such a short time x

I am having to suppress the urge to talk about her second album here because I want you to make up your own mind about it and I just have so much to say but what I will say is that there’s more to it than “meets the eye” even though you did catch that tear. I do think that her second album has darker themes than the cover implies, though it’s a lot warmer and definitely more hopeful than the first album that is literally structured and conceptualised like a nightmare, sleep paralysis, fears, darkness and depression. Her first EP (don’t smile at me) is also seriously good, they are so experimental and just… make art. For its own sake, and one can tell. And then there are also her singles that basically could be put together to create a whole additional EP, a handful of insanely good live covers (“end of the world” and “you don’t get me high anymore” and “bad”), and her second EP (guitar songs) that has just two songs on it that will nevertheless rip your heart out and squeeze it in a fricking juice presser. Anyway. Highly recommend

The alliteration in when the party’s over is such good writing. I think the effect this song has on the listener is pretty incredible, scientifically speaking. Based on what I’ve been able to analyse, it’s a lot like the yawn response, the mirroring of behaviour in each other, that can be seen as lacking in people with low empathy. In fact I’ve actually noticed that people with a low sense of empathy tend to be less likely to connect to Billie’s music, because one of the reasons she’s so good is because she emotes and tells stories with her voice, she’s very dynamic and expressive, not just technical. And when she sang that song, she had just lost a friend of hers and in at least one of the comped and stacked vocal harmonies she has said in interviews she was crying and I think that although it is buried into the production of the ambiance, we can still feel it as we listen to it. And because their production style is so close up and all encompassing, almost like surround sound 3D asmr inside our head, it seems like there’s someone crying within us. No wonder we get that response. I also challenge you to not get goosebumps after the bridge of “The 30th”. I’ve observed the same pattern in reactions

It’s most probably unintentional, but I think that the recurring distortion represents how Billie distorts the line between genres, since none of the songs are confined to any particular genre.

[Thanksgiving, 2023] I'm 69 and wasn't into POP [or Country], but then in Jan. 2020 saw that this young brother and sister won all these Grammys for their Album "When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go" and "Bad Guy" and checked it out and now Billie is my numero uno. You may not take much stock in this, but Rolling Stone listed WWAFAWDWG as the 7th best debut album of all time - and that by a 17 yr. old - and her 21 yr. old brother - phenomenal. I have the Beatles, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, the Doors, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, etc. etc, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and I believe this particular album is great and will be recognized as such for many years. I listened to your reaction a bit ago but forgot to comment - I really like it; no yawns! Billie wrote "Listen Before I go" at 15 when she really was on the edge - if you ever have time, I believe you would enjoy the R. J. Cutler documentary on Billie "The World's A Little Blurry" [Apple +, $ 6 a couple years ago, Feb. 26, 2021 - it's about 25 minutes too long, but is otherwise excellent]. Robert Christgau, the dean of music reviewers wrote, [Dec 20, 2019] 'no teenager I can recall has ever made such an impressive album, though I guess Elvis's Sun Sessions gets an asterisk..." I wonder will it always be Billie's best?

Finneas and Billie singing together is something special for sure. His own first album is called Blood Harmony, which is what one calls it when family members harmonise because they tend to have the same quality in their vocal chords that just makes it particularly special. And also, you should listen to their harmonies on the single “Everything I Wanted” - which incidentally has a more hopeful twist to the theme of “listen before I go”. Listening to their harmonies live is also a treat and a half (like for example when they covered End of the World. Oh my god.) And yes, I love you is most certainly a song that makes me wanna cry. The chord progression also reminds me of Leonard Cohen’s hallelujah (and When the Party’s Over as well). It’s so beautiful and is sounds like a movie, another progression from the previous song. The dreams becoming more ethereal but also more real (with the details of the sound of real life starting to creep into the dreams).

46:08 - To answer your question, well nowadays this type of music is called: "Alt-Pop", following the music similar like Lorde, AURORA, The xx, even Lana Del Rey, but Billie Eilish's music has lots of Post-Industrial music and Electropop, so her combination of music is pretty unique, yeah. Post-Industrial music is anything that borrows from original Industrial music, but in a modern context, hence the distortion, machinery sounds, sound effects, and scary sounds, that's pretty much experimental music but in a modern context with her Pop vocals and style.

This is my first time watching one of your videos. I've watched several KZbin react videos of Billie's music over the past couple of years and I must say, yours is the best and most relatable. Your reaction and take on her music is EXACTLY how I feel. I'm 60 years old and just started listening to Billie 3 years ago when I became curious about who this girl is. All I knew about her was she had green and black hair. So, I looked her up on KZbin and the very first song that came up was You Should See Me in a Crown. (One of my top favorites now) I listened/watched and instantly became a fan! Her music and personality really struck me. I just love her & Finneas and they are THE BEST in music today. I often compare their talent to the brother & sister duo The Carpenters. I very much appreciated your take on this album. Thank you for sharing. 💖

The bridge in See me in a crown goes tooooo hardddd. The song was inspired by a line Moriarty says in Sherlock Holmes, but to me I just really like to imagine her singing about LA and the fakeness of people there that aren’t interested in creating art but just to be famous and make money as “this nothing town”. That’s maybe just me, though.

No it’s not pop. She just happens to be popular. I think Bury a Friend is her best song. Not my favourite although it’s in my top ten (because favourite and best are two different categories that can overlap), but the best in terms of production and writing and experimentation and layers and it’s scary af for sure. To me it’s the song that best captures the album as a whole. And I also feel like it’s the most “honest” of the songs on this album, while being obscure enough to not give away details.

In terms of the order of the songs it’s interesting that one has wish you were gay and then 8. Because wish you were gay was about someone who ignored her, and 8 is from the perspective of someone that she hurt. Like the flip of the coin, which makes me think of how she talked about idontwannabeyouanymore be the flip of the coin following copycat in her EP. But in this song she’s not really singing “happily” as far as I understood it, it’s more about being “babyish” because of the childishness of her behaviour toward this person. Also it’s so interesting how you pointed out that the album feels consistent, but really, it’s also so varied! It’s crazy that an album can be both.

It's always nice to see new reactions to Billie and Finneas' music! And Finneas also has some good independent music, I recommend his two albums 'Optimist' and 'Blood Harmony (Deluxe Version)' Haha if you found 'bury a friend' scary, you should check out the music video. It adds a whole visual layer to it. Perhaps you could do a reaction to all some of her music videos? They have some cool concepts to them! And Billie directs a lot of them herself. (she directed 'What Was I Made For?', 'Male Fantasy', 'Happier Than Ever', 'NDA', 'Lost Cause', 'Your Power', 'Therefore i am', 'Everything I Wanted', 'xanny', and two of her earlier works). My favourites of her music videos are probably 'Happier Than Ever', 'NDA', your power', 'bury a friend', and 'all the good girls go to hell' (which is a continuation of 'bury a friends's video). Anyways I can see you've filmed a reaction to Happier Than Ever, so I'll check that out next! :)

Listen Before I Go is about suicidal thoughts. Yes, check out Don't Smile at Me. Her side projects are good too. Her James Bond song won an Oscar last year. 'Everything I Wanted' won a Grammy. Happier than Ever is more mature and wonderful too. I think Don't Smile is very good (and what 15-16 yo!). WWDGWWAFA is her most popular but the other 2 are even better imo... Great reaction! Love Billie! In "Bury a friend" the guy who says "Billie", "listen", etc. is not Finneas, it's a British rapper called Crooks.
