Look at how common abuse is. You’re most likely to be abused by someone you know rather than a complete stranger. I’m not shocked because a large amount of the population is forced into resilience on an everyday basis. Even those that you know can be silently struggling. Victims of trauma have no other choice but to function, most of them do. Look at the statistics and see how many truly suffer in silence, and how many families facilitate abuse. It could be happening in your family and you wouldn’t know it. 1 in 3 women experience it, 1 in 6 men experience it. (As a survivor I hate being called resilient, we didn’t have a choice)

Calling a white man that married a black woman with 10 kids a racist to simplistic. Not everything is so clear cut as being a racist or ally. Robert was not a racist. It was just the time frame of their love. Robert who should have been a celebrated soldier but instead he was reduced to just being a n****r lover. For perspective, Loving v. Virginia was in 1967. Bunny was born in 1955. The father was an outcaste from the white world he came. In similarity, Trevor Noah spoke about being ‘born a crime.’ I can only imagine the father seeing his black wife and mixed children with resentment. He was conflicted with loving them (like Prince Harry to Meghan Markle)…that’s why he chose them. Love in one hand and a loss of a white world he once had access to on the other hand. The father, though a monster to his wife and children, was also a victim of the anti-miscegenation climate of the U.S. at the time. We as audience have to humanize all of their struggles. The father, the mother, Bunny, Bobby, James and whomever else where all victims. Today we live in post Loving v. Virginia so may not empathize with the psychology of that time.

Oh yeah Tennille I read somewhere in article about the debarges. The father forced the children to have sex with each other and Bobby raped his brothers James and Tommy. El became a father at the age of 15. Its been said El was hypersexual teenager maybe because of the sexual abuse in the home. Its also been said El doesn't like to talk about certain things in the debarge upbringing. The debarge has serious generational curse. Chico debarge son was murdered last year in Sherman Oakes, CA. The young man was homeless. El debarge oldest son El Jr. has talked against his father on Instagram how he was absentee father and slept with one of his girlfriends and got her pregnant. It's complete mess in the debarge family Its just sad Tennille. The debarge siblings have so much jealousy against El because he became the star of the group.

@@crystalcormier9376 I've heard about El and his escapades before too. Now, I didn't know about the son's girlfriend getting pregnant by him before! Just scandalous!😵😵😵 Bobby hated James because he was Robert's favorite child. So he all but killed him as a kid. Just crazy stuff! I'm so thankful for my family and my upbringing when I hear stories like this. I NEVER had to worry about someone doing something to me like that. I've gotten maybe 3/4 spankings as a kid combined from mom, dad and both sets of grandparents. I never had to see my mom being abused, and my home was full of love and laughter. I always say I grew up in a lunatic asylum and the patients (us kids) were running it. And I wouldn't change it for the world! Everyone was always at my maternal grandparents house because they knew they'd get a great meal and some good laughs. Any day of the week, someone extra had their feet under Gran's table and she was more than happy to have them. I wish everyone grew up like I did. I think we'd have so much less crime and violence in our community if the children were loved as much as we were. Don't get me wrong, none of the adults were to be played with...ESPECIALLY Gran! But there wasn't abuse of any kind going on there. She beat up one of my mom's friend's mother for beating her child so badly she was hospitalized for 4 weeks with multiple broken bones. My grandma said she wanted Daisy (false name) to feel that same pain Karen (false name) did. And boy did she! The only reason my grandma stayed outta jail was because Daisy's ass didn't want to go for what she'd done, and she knew Gran would be honest about the reason behind the assault. But let me stop talking lol. I'm just hoping part 2 doesn't take forever!

I read Bunny and Tommy's books and everything you're reporting seems right on track. I pray for this family often. So much talent and so much deep, trauma. This is an entire case study. I'd love to see Etterline on Iyanla with some accountability. I understand the times, and the abuse, then add unaddressed mental illness (even post-partum) and religious deflection...(and back then women couldn't get homes, bank accounts or cars without men)...HOWEVER...those children had NO covering or protection...horrific. There is some, clear mental instability from both parents. That father was absolutely sick AND perverse. Unbelievable.

I just went ahead and bought the books because ppl kept messaging me and saying whoever told you the story got the info from these books so I was like let me buy these books and read them when I have a chance. Out of the few pages I've read it seems like alot of this gossip is true and that is absolutely horrible. I would have rather it was gossip than true things. I knew before research that they were abused but not to the extent of what they truly went through. I have to say I'm happy they're still standing strong through it all because this is just a true mess.

She had no choice and she did called the cops on him for not only abusing his kids but also abusing her too and since he was a white man, the cops didn't arrest or charge him assault or rape.

Damn, I want to cry for those kids. These parents ain't shit. Since she is religious God gave Etterline plenty of chances to leave Bob, but she didn't take them. The fact that he wanted a divorce and she didn't take it shows how broken and prideful she is.

@@kuroe-chan5190 She KNEW he was abusing the kids (and her) and STILL wanted him around while using religion as an excuse. She ENABLED him and helped him to abuse the kids. She is the epitome of a neglectful parent. As a result of this, these kids had NO foundation, NO relationship to reality, and NO identity. These parents had too many mental issues and it cursed their kids forevermore.

Fleo yes you took the words right out of my mouth! And your right! I believe god took him out her life when her husband told her he didn’t want to be with her anymore and was willing to walk Away from her peacefully , telling her he wanted to be with another woman , fo me that was god saving her!!! But she kept on going back for more !! By not wanting to except that and begging him to come back home , and for what !!! It’s not as if the monster was supporting them with money anyways. No she clearly brought that monster back home to continue to abuse those children !! When they could have been set free by the mans own will !!!! What a narcissist woman she was herself!!!!!

I think it was a pride and ego thing with her cos if the man is abusive to you and your kids, goes for months, doesn't even provide for you why would you still want him and feel entitled to him that much. I believe it because the guy was white and she felt she had scored big time and had something maybe her friends didnt have

This story had me so outraged at the level of abuse inflicted by both parents to their children. Undoubtedly, the most despicable, heinous, tragic and depressing story I have ever heard. Even if 1/100th of the story is true, both parents needed to be committed to an asylum or given a life sentence for child abuse. Robert Sr.'s mother warned her......smdh.

@@zabeth11173 The kids grew up in church for all the good it did them. I think Etterlene might have been going to a convention or a revival when Bunny was begging to go to church with her. In this case, though, it seems like Etterlene was tryna pimp Bunny out to her own father. Church or no church, BOTH parents were sick as hell and the kids would have been better off in foster care.
