I have this exact motor on my mums lawn mower..It was bought new in the 1970s.I bought a new carb for it off Amazon, changedthe oil regularly, & painted it up, & is still running perfectly.Never had the head off.I think these are rated at 3.5 hp..Mind you, when operating, it never goes over about 2000rpm.Oh ,& the oil leaks out of the crankcase where the governor lever is attached.There is no oil seal.Probably where this engine got all its mess from.Nice work. I have an old Briggs and Straton lawn mower engine that I stripped and cleaned like this. The idea was to turn it 90 degrees to run like this Honda. My only draw back is I can not find piston rings for the engine. Great job with the little honda engine💪 Inspire me to go and finish my project. (Need the engine to drive a wood mulcher machine for branches and twigs)

Don't use a punch to install bearings! Use a block of wood or an Arbor press. Also you need to torque the flywheel nut otherwise you risk the nut coming loose and the engine will not fire or run like crap because it's out of time. The flywheel can shift on the crank and break the woodruff key if that nut is not torqued correctly causing a no start condition!

To answer a question that was asked during the video The yellow stain on all the parts internally is from a lot of gas getting into the oil and it being continuously run or otherwise known as varnish
@johnbrizendine77162 жыл бұрын
Yep, though, it seems that the stuck valve and some of the build up on the top of the piston and the stuck ring and the discoloration on the piston skirt are signs of probable overheating.

My question is what were they running that thing on gas or wood ash I mean I've seen some bad carbon in my day but never anything like that it looks like and this is just from my experience but the only way I can see anything like that happening is if it's run without a air filter for a long period of time near some place that deals with a lot of sawdust or wood ash or really anything like that even if it was a lawn mower at some point and was just continuously munching on grass

The yellow staining is from the oil. Full synthetic oils do this if the engine is not run for long periods of time when running. The red on the pistons is a coating. To help the piston move in the bore easier. You can see where it's been worn off on the skirts of the piston.

I do not think it overheated but I can't be sure unless I can get a good look at the cylinder walls to see for any discoloring however that would have to be done after a very slate honing to take off the very surface to see the true extent of any damage that may be there and due to the fact that the bearing journals do not seem to be discolored indicates that it was not overheated I really think it was just run with a lot of dirty fuel and I mean really dirty fuel like varnish that's what happened most likely

@johnbrizendine77162 жыл бұрын
That appears to be a "kool-bore" aluminum block, those really shouldn't be honed due to the "glossy" looking surface being what seals against the piston rings, it did look like where were a few deep scores, so probably better to hone this one in particular, but the "kool-bore" blocks in general should not be honed.

Once you do this type of stuff more than 5 times (small engines) you can pretty much just look at a particular nut or bolt and know exactly where it goes. Even if you've only worked on one small engine ever multiple times if you've torn it down to the block you will always remember where everything goes. I even have memory affected by my epilepsy so it is pretty easy. Don't even lay mine out anymore just throw them in a pile while I'm working. Lol

How do you know eyeball was a winner. Point gap also effects timing on those.
@AJRestoration Жыл бұрын
It does not affect timing, timing is set by the key in the flywheel, and these engines do not have any timing adjustments.
@sife3438 Жыл бұрын
@@AJRestoration The later the points open, the later the spark comes and retards the timing. The earlier the points open the sooner the spark comes and advances the timing. A wider point gap will make the points open early.

Small engine rebuilder here. As long as the bolts are all the same length then I don’t think it really matters. They don’t stretch out like on car engines because they’re not torqued no where near as much.
