I guess I have to admit I favor old industry. It's great to see the Pierson. She's scarred but stalwart and I have the utmost respect for her. Trying to compare her to the cruise ship is like comparing apples and oranges. Right? Good to see both. A great job on the video, as always!

@@carolyndavis7476 yeah they’re both very different ships, quite the contrast for sure! I love both of them, each hard workers in their own way

Old Industry in 7, I have seen both, always fun to see a ship in the canal no matter what, but always cool to see old, never gets old lol, Thanks Jonathan!!!

Love the juxtaposition!! Always a treat to see Octantis, our cabin was about 7 back from the front in the middle row. Amazing ship and a neat way to explore our back yard here in America

You got to go on her? Lucky! That sounds like an amazing trip!

@@jonathanellsworth21 We did, sailed from Toronto to Milwaukee in 2023. An amazing vessel! Going through the Welland Canal was a real highlight.

Poor Pierson, in dire need of a facelift or just a good coat of paint. He deserves better after serving so many years. Speaking of Viking, their river boat on the Mississippi docks often in Red Wing where I view it. It’s shorter than Octantis at 450’, but has a commanding presence too. Thanks for another great video. Always enjoy your work!

@@rcdoodles6214 I haven’t seen the Viking Mississippi, probably will sometime though, have a lot of family in the Winona and Rochester areas so am down there quite often. She’d be fun to catch!

How is the Michipicoten? Anyone hear anything. Wow, the Octantis is surely a BEAST next to the Robert S. This was a GREAT video, thanks Jonathan!!
@jonathanellsworth212 ай бұрын
@@elizabethw.8561 thank you! Glad you enjoyed! As for Michipicoten, honestly at this point I have no idea. I’ve gotten reliable word that she failed inspection but that they would keep working on her possibly sailing in October. But then yesterday she appears to have been moved out of drydock with no warning and into the neighboring slip, which to my mind seems like a really bad sign. So something might have happened, either good or bad. I’d put out another video on her but it would basically be a long winded “I have no idea”, so I probably won’t.

@@jonathanellsworth21 Well, let's just hope the Robert S is up to the job while the shipping professionals figure it out!!! thanks!!

@@elizabethw.8561 yeah we’ll have to wait and see what happens. I know for certain they need her and really don’t want to scrap her, but they may not have a choice either. I’m keeping my ears and eyes open!

I know one can get tickets for passenger's on the freight ships.There's no reason not to paint the ships. I don't know why they allow them to pit rust, there is paint for that.

@@johnmcque4813 on oceangoing freighters, not lakers though, typically. You CAN get tickets in a charity raffle to sail on them though

@@jonathanellsworth21 The blue ships with "Polsteam" on the side used to carry paying passengers prior to the pandemic. In 2011, I made a 5 week passage from Port Talbot Wales UK to Thunder Bay Canada on their "Isolda". Given the choice of a voyage on the Octantis or the Pierson I would choose the Pierson every time. I've never come into Duluth on a ship (unless you count a trip on the Vista fleet). On the two occasions that I visited Duluth I arrived by bus. Once on the Happy Times bus from Thunder Bay and the other on the Amtrak Thruway bus from St Paul. It would be great to arrive by train - plans have been mooted to re-open the railway from St Paul to passengers - if that were to happen that might get me to come over from UK - I'd like to visit Duluth at least once more before I die - In the meantime, thanks to you and all the other uploaders that enable us to see the trains and the ships.
