Wrote this last time I was in West Virginia years ago: 'Ol Joe Clark was a preacher's son Daddy lost his life in the mines His granny tried to keep him straight But never saw the signs Fare thee well, 'Ol Joe Clark Fare thee well I'm bound Fare thee well 'Ol Joe Clark And goodbye Betsy Brown At 16 Joe found love Her name was Betsy Brown Took her innocence on a rainy day While her Momma was in town Fare thee well 'Ol Joe Clark Fare thee well I'm bound Fare the well 'Ol Joe Clark And goodbye Betsy Brown Quincy Morgan was the local spot Sold them trees he grew in the shed One day said got something new for you Sold them some little pills instead Fare thee well 'Ol Joe Clark Fare thee well I'm bound Fare thee well 'Ol Joe Clark And goodbye Betsy Brown Now they had to steal when they got sick Got caught judge let 'em go Granny prayed on it and let 'em stay When Betsy started to show Fare thee well 'Ol Joe Clark Fare thee well I'm bound Fare thee well 'Ol Joe Clark And goodbye Betsy Brown They pulled a job up in Strange Creek Quincy's driving saved the day That night Betsy laid down in the bath And washed her sins away Fare thee well 'Ol Joe Clark Fare thee well I'm bound Fare the well 'Ol Joe Clark And goodbye Betsy Brown Joe got put in castle Hazleton Quincy a skinner joint in Maine Now Betsy rests up in Tinney Her momma ain't never been the same Fare thee well 'Ol Joe Clark Fare thee well I'm bound Fare thee well 'Ol Joe Clark And Goodbye Betsy Brown

The Old Joe Clark I remember from the early 1960s had these lyrics: "Old Joe Clark mopped the bar, liquor was his pay. Never saved a golden eagle, drank it all away." ...and... "Old Joe Clark walked downtown backwards, people asked him why. I came back for one more drink while waving you goodbye."

My school choir is singing this song.....i think. I think we are singing a different version, because we say 20 stories, and we say "round and around, old joe clark, round and around i say. he'd follow me 10,000 miles to hear my fiddle play." I know, its weird. IDK.

This tune was used in a tribute to the American fighting man, broadcast in Europe on VE day in 1945. The test was written by Norman Corwin, a great radio writer of the day. The chorus was, as i recall, "Round and round Hitler's grave, Round and round we go. Going to put that feller down so he don't get up no more?

I just looked this up after learning it on the Mountain Dulcimer when I was 9 (I'm 32 now), recently came across my old dulcimer and music book and this song was in it, but the lyrics were 'i went down to old joes house, never been there before. he slept on a feather bed, i slept on the floor. fare the well old joe clark, fare the well im gone. fare the well old joe clark, i'd better be getting on." - after some googling, it seems there are 1,000 different verses for this song. hardly any use the same lyrics (from what i was looking through). i found that pretty interesting, that a simple song i learned when i was 9 that only had the one verse, actually has many many verses.

I used to sing this for kids. Their favourite verses were the one that The Rosinators sing that goes: I went down to Old Joe's house, he invited me to supper I stubbed my toe on the table leg and stuck my nose in the butter. and Don't go down to Old Joe's house, tell you the reason why, He blows his nose on old corn bread and calls it pumpkin pie.

Sadly "Fare Thee Well" is no more; those of us who loved driving past the house mentioned in the song feel a great loss to the history of Clay Co. Kentucky. Several years ago it was demolished; and a "replica" erected in its place. The historical plaque remains; but Fare Thee Well as we knew it, exists now only in the song; and in our memories. A picture can be found @ my channel.

John Hartford put an advertisement in his version: I need and old Orpheum 5-string with a 12 inch open back pot So next time you're up in the attic take a look and see what you've got. Or a twelve inch Farland open-back, 28 and 3 eighth inch scale Sure wish you'd write and let me know if you've got one for sale Another of his verses said: Everyone says,"Right on, Far out!" then stands around and laughs, Guess I'd better say it too or Joe might kick my ass.
