We walked 12 miles today and we came across these really cool lifts. All with touch buttons.
Had we been staying in the hotel then it would have made things a little easier. Took a while before someone came into the lift and inserted their key card and we ended up on floor 17.
At the end I talk about 'floor advancing'. I've used a couple of videos to demostrate what I mean. Two of them are mine, but one is from Vincent Chong who has been uploading videos for longer than I have! Thanks for allowing me to use it.
Express video in Hong Kong:
• 灣仔集成中心Express升降機
Vincent's Channel:

#### ADDITIONAL INFO: ####
DieselDucy has a video showing the Otis advancer in operation. • Elevator Machine Room ...
For a detailed explanation of the Otis Carriage "call stopping and direction logic" device, see my video here:
• OTIS FLOOR SELECTOR mo...
Anyway, back to DieselDucy's video, if you see 2:02, the carriage (this view is from the back, but it's more apparent from the front) is split. The side we are looking at, raises as soon as the lift heads up at 2:02. This is driven up (or down) but a motor mounted on the carriage. This motor raises the "split part" of the carriage 2 or 3 floors. This is the advancer system. About 1.5 seconds later (2:03) the carriage as a whole goes up, but with the split section looking for calls slightly ahead of the actual carriage.
Once it finds a call, the "V" cup thing on the end, lowers the split section back inline with the main carriage (this is the "slowing down" part). Fascinating system and I hope that made sense!?

Beutiful! I recognize several parts of theese used in Swedish KONE lifts as well. But not the touch buttons or the high-speed controllers... Would be nice to find one tough... I do recognize the doors. they were used on all the 70's KONE elevators built for the Stockholm subway back in 74-78!

CamCast Nope. Those elevators have old Kone pop-out floor indicators, and they weren't available anymore 1983. Some old Kone pop-out elevators have still original floor indicator after modernization in 1980s, but it doesn't mean that pop-out floor indicator was available in 1980s. This building is from 1970, and they had no reason to modernize those elevators after 13 years. Stop and alarm buttons have been replaced, because Kone Classic stop and alarm buttons are more usefull than Kone pop-out connected stop and alarm switch.

Now that you've mentioned it, I've seen quite a number of high-speed Express Lift HDB (Singapore's public housing) installations where the floor number indicator jumps before the elevator car moves. Is that floor advancing at work? (See e.g. Blk 81 Toa Payoh, Blk 81A Toa Payoh, and Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur).

Is a "floor advancer" specifically needed when the elevator takes more than 1 floor of distance to slow down from full speed to complete stop? Also, on some high speed elevators with solid state controllers (not sure if newer ones or just older ones), the indicator appears to get a few floors ahead (or at least it seems to "run away" going very fast for the first few floors), similar to what is seen in this video. Is this an effect from how the controller is programmed, possibly for a similar reason? And can this be seen on modern controllers, or just older controllers? On some earlier solid state Otis controllers, the floor passing chime (something that I don't think is often heard in Europe) will actually desync from the indicator changing. Is the floor passing chime actually accurate unlike the indicator for some reason?

Most newer Kone elevators (at least the ones here in the US) seem to advance the PI (numbers) but not the floor passing beep. The end result of that is that after the numbers stop changing, you then hear "beep.....beep.....beep.........beep..............beep.......................beep" (fewer for slower elevators, of course).
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 6 жыл бұрын
April - Hi! Lifts (sorry elevators :D ) in the US have the 'passing floor beep' which seems to connect to the "ACTUAL" passing of floors (we don't have that in the UK). A floor advancer is a method of 'finding a call ahead' while the elevator is going at high speed, then allowing plenty of time to slow down at arrive at the floor. So these are separate things. upanddownadventures - Yes you are right, some of the newer lifts (Kone and Schinder in particular) still show the lift travelling faster than they actually are, until the display gets to a limit, when it then goes to the lift speed. With newer lifts, everything is run by computers, so you can essentially program the display to do whatever you want. If you want a lift to appear faster than it is, then you can do it. As per my answer to April, the "floor passing" bleep is something different. Although the display may go fast, the passing of the floors is linked to the "beep" so that people can get an idea of the floor position (if they are counting the beeps) without needing to see the display. If the "beep" were to go too fast, then it defeats the object of having it in the first place if people cannot keep up with it. Thanks for your comments.

These are some pretty lifts! I like how the doors integrate nicely with the wood panelling on the walls. Defenitly part of the interiour design. It just looks very elegant and stylish. I didn't konw of the floor adavance system yet, it's quite clever but I wonder if it makes the floor selector design more complicated. Odd to see a western brand in a former soviet country, at least at the time when this hotel was built. I've heard some western companies licensed technology to eastern block countries. I bet this was / is a luxery hotel for international travellers? The GDR made two types of products: "export quality" for western travellers and had inferiour products for their own market. I wonder if it was the same for the soviet union.

Thanks for the comment and info. Absolutely it makes the design more difficult. I was going to go into more details in this video, but it would have made the video editing MUCH longer, so I didn't in the end! But basically, as the lift sets off, 2 or 3 Advancer relays come on. ADV1 ADV2 and ADV3. These push the floor selector ahead that number of floors, presuming it didn't find a call on those floors. Then depending upon how many ADV relays come on, this sets the "speed up/top speed and slow down" curve to meet the floors calls ahead of it. Obviously it depends on the lift manufacturer, I'm quoting the Express Lifts design here.

Also, DieselDucy has a video showing the advancer in operation. It's an Otis lift , hang on i'll find it. This one kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmiocopnfd96qs0 If you see 2:02, this carriage (this view is from the back, it's more apparent from the front) is split. The side we are looking at raises as soon as the lift heads off at 2:02, which rises the split part of the carriage 2 or 3 floors. This is the advancer system in use here. About 1.5 seconds later (2:03) the carriage as a whole goes up, but with the split section looking for calls slightly ahead of the actual carriage. Hope that makes sense!

Now i want to know how the floor advance system works. I guess they're not just freefalling the floor selector a bit. But then it would compensate for the extra waiting time at leveling when they just freefall the lift car a few floors at startup.

You'll probably find that the Otis system doesn't show the "advancement" on the floor display indicators. The indicators terminals are on one side of the carriage, probably the bit that follows the actual position of the lift. I suppose Otis is the only system where you can do this as the floor selector is quite big and adaptable, but for other manufacturers (especially systems using more relays than mechanics) the floor position lamps had to connect to the floor selector, with the "floor selector as a whole" being advanced.
@TarzanAndConz
@TarzanAndConz 6 жыл бұрын
It must be something like the floor selector having its own 'mini shaft' inside its main shaft where it can move something like 3 floors. With the 'mini shaft' following the lift car motion and the selector freely moving in there for the equivalent of a few floors.

Hi MrMatt! Some time ago i commented on one of your videos, telling you that in the building where I live there is an old relay controlled lift. I don't know if you remember me, I'm that guy from Italy who always wanted to go inside the motor room since he was a child, but always found the door locked. I've not gained access to the motor room yet, but I made some footage of the lift operating. It is cool because it's one of the slightly spooky lifts (at least in my opinion), and you can clearly hear the relays clicking from above you while you're traveling inside the car. If you want to use my footage to make a video or you're just interested to see it, I can upload it here on KZbin and give you a link and/or send you the original video files. Of course you're not obliged to see or use it, if you're not interested I'll just delete the files and I won't be mad at you at all ;) Here is a list of the actions I performed while recording: - calling the lift while it is already on the current floor - calling the lift while it is in another floor - going from ground floor to last floor - going from last floor to ground floor - pushing the stop button - manually pushing the "door closed" switch (I've done that while I was on the last floor, so when I push the switch you can hear a relay clicking above the car) - demonstrating how the lift goes only to the first selected floor, ignoring the push of every other button - trying to have a look inside the lift shaft (although with poor results)

By the way, your videos today are still awesome after many years, very entertaining and educational! Keep it up!

Thank very much for the compliments :) I understand what you are saying about using the video. I am a perfectionist - when I go out and film stuff, I film like 2 hours and use about 10 minutes (an exaggeration but you know what I mean). So I'm not sure if I'm going to use it as I prefer to film my own material, normally with an editing idea in mind. For example, the hotel video, my idea was to explain the floor advancer. I don't really like editing just normal lift videos anymore as I get bored editing them and they never make it to youtube. Besides, I have so much footage to edit at the moment I'm getting depressed just thinking about it LOL - I just don't know where I'm going to get all the time from. So please do upload it and give me a link and then I'll take a look :) Thanks, Matt

Those buttons are a relay. They work only once. To push the button several times like you did is just a stupid waist of time. If you are a elevator nut you should know that. One push..........that's it.
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 5 жыл бұрын
You can hear that there is an additional relay inside that touch sensitive button, which was the point of me pressing it repeatedly as relays behind buttons are not that common (only when they are self contained). Other manufactures don't have relays behind their touch sensitive buttons which made this unusual. I was not trying to make the lift come any faster - because yes, I am an 'elevator nut'. I could have pressed the button once, then rewound the video 5 times to emphasize the relay, but then someone else may have called this action stupid and why not just press it 5 times.

You can't force people to use British or American English, it's their choice, and even if he's a British it's not wrong to use American English. Also you don't need to rage a lot especially with full caps and too many exclamation marks like that. It makes people think that you're so immature.

I've worked with many lift engineers over the years (the ones with who come from the industry with jobs, industry experience and training). In fact, I was working with a Kone engineer 3 months ago in the City of London getting some card readers to integrate into Kone controller via inputs and outputs. In all my observations over my years, in the UK they are referred to as "CO-NEE" but I've heard the proper pronunciation is as spoken in this video. If you think "Kone/Cone" is correct then that's your decision, but I prefer to pronunciation their name correctly, using the videos on their official channel.
