They go from happily being willing to take $10 to learning that it's worth a hundred because you told them and then them greedily wanting 100 magically all of a sudden. Rather than let them get greedy, just let all your hard work, skills, time invested and knowing what things are worth benefit you and not benefit greedy sellers who try to use our knowledge for free ungratefully.

Sorry you had to deal with that, it sounds pretty frustrating, and the "free time" spent in the car really gives you a chance to reflect on how crappy the whole deal was. At my store we finally had to implement a 10% appraisal fee due to people coming in and taking up tons of our time and playing us against our competition in town. I would tell sellers up front that we would give them a fair appraisal, show them exactly how we came up with the values, and if they didn't want to take our offer, which was almost always higher than our competition as they only bought a narrow range of books from folks, whereas we generally took it all ( the Charltons, Dells, Harveys, Gold Keys, etc. ), then we would charge them the 10% fee and both parties could move on and feel satisfied that nobody's time had been wasted. This eliminated almost all the nonsense, and because people selling comics to comic stores generally only care about getting some amount of cash out of the deal, very few would be willing to part with any amount of money for just the appraisal. In the few cases where people balked and walked, they would almost always come back a few days later and say the other guys had offered them less, or wouldn't even look at the books because they were not "pre-1975" or some other random determination. In those cases, we would refund to appraisal fee and buy the collections for the predetermined amount. Side note: the competition's policy of not looking at post-1975 books led to our buying a roughly two long-box collection that was chock-full of 1977 Marvel 35-cent variants in high grade. All the Star Wars books ( the #1 graded 9.0 ), ASMs, FFs, Hulks, X-Men, etc... It turned out to be the biggest haul of 35-cent variants we ever scored in over 20 years of business!

I backed out of a sale. It was an arranged meet with a cash sale for a CGC graded book. The meeting spot was at a restaurant about an hour from each of our towns. He arrived and texted me - described what he was wearing and said he was sitting on a bench by the entrance to the restaurant. I could see him from my car. It was a busy restaurant with a big parking lot. He wasn't alone. He had another guy with him. The car they drove was a total beater (I saw them pull in to the lot), and the guys looked dodgy to me. The value of the book he was buying was many multiples of the value of his car. Maybe the guy simply wasn't into cars, but it didn't make sense to me that a guy who could afford to buy the book didn't have the money to fix or upgrade his car. I also didn't like that he had a pal with him. I got a bad vibe from the situation and texted him that I was backing out of the deal. Still feel crappy about it. Maybe I'm a judgmental prick, but I learned long ago to trust my gut. The guy had already not made the best first impression with our communications via email before the meet. Terrible grammar and spelling. I told him via text that if he had Paypal I'd send him $40 for his time and gas. Never heard back from him.

@@MintHunterComics Yes, especially in business communications, which this essentially was. I wouldn't have abandoned the meeting just because he looked like a crack addict. Comic collectors can look dodgy. If he was legit, he had thousands in cash on him, so it would make sense that he brought a friend along, but he should have told me that he was bringing someone else to the meeting. About a month before this deal I had another arranged meeting to sell a biggish book for cash. The guy showed up looking like a train-hopping hobo, but I never got any bad signals from him. He arrived at our meeting driving a vintage Jaguar. Everything went smoothly, and we hung out for awhile talking comics and cars.

Great topic and great discussion...I've had that happen a few times and in every situation I tried to come to a fair compromise but in the few instances where it was clearly an unethical way of doing business I stepped away from the purchase, despite driving an hour to the destination.....I believe if you go into the situation with honest and fair intentions than you should feel comfortable walking away from someone clearly being deceptive or misleading...I especially struggle when you agree to a deal and by the time you arrive the person raises the price by a significant amount because they've received other offers in the meantime. Mind you they've already agreed before you've started the journey....

Sometimes when something is just listed and you get the Seller to agree on a price/deal. Someone else jumps in to offer more or Tell the Seller that the item is under priced. One Lady agreed to sell me an item and as I'm literally 10 minutes away she jacked up the price $50 more. I ended up just turning around as there was no telling how much more she was going to try to get me for. I would've confirmed via text that She is offering you all of the Comics and the Game for $300. I was expecting she was going to pull out the Keys and hope you'd forget what was in the lot.

I am not, nor have ever been a comic dealer, but, I've dealt with buying / selling/trading, as a collector for some 53 years. The usual is after stating a basic price per book/pile,, is trying to jack them way up when you show up. As well ,nothing like dealing with an old bud, and his wife sticks her nose into the deal. One either takes an even bigger lose, or the deal falls through .Either way, the friendship gets damaged. I find dealing with a married bud a nightmare. One can take give huge deals on taking low grade for trade, and discounts that reduce the price of the book to as low as 15-20 % of the market price, and his woman will still accuse you of being a robber ripping him off. Whenever a dude says "We have to renegotiate the deal" While his wife is sitting there glaring at him, you know its time to walk. To this day, over 35 years later ,I wish I had.

My buddy was selling an electric piano (keyboard) once. A lady prob in her late 40s was interested, she told a long story about how it was for her son who was very sick. The keyboard when new was prob around $700-$800 and he was asking around $350 O.B.O. It was a high-end model but a few years old at that point. So feeling bad he said "Ok ill take $200." She agreed and then when she got there asked, "Can I please give u $100 now and come back for the other $100?" Again feeling sorry for her situation, he agreed. So some time goes by and he can't get a hold of her, so he calls from a diff number. She answers finally and acts really snarky with him saying, "Oh this thing is junk! THIS didn't work and THAT didn't work and blah blah blah (I know for a fact it was in perfect condition having played it myself many times) So he said "Ok that's fine, either bring it back or ill come get it, take it back and give you the $100 back". She just hangs up on him. He kept calling back, then she starts threatening to sue him, her son also answering threatening to " kick his @$$". He dropped it eventually taking the loss. He won't do online sales anymore and also is very weary of peoples sob stories. Some people are just crappy people and have no shame with the lies they tell to rip you off. He was the seller, and it wasn't comics but still a good example of peoples B.S.! Sorry for writing a whole novel about it lol

A great, and informative, cautionary tale. I've had similar experiences with those "just looking for an appraisal to start". Before I look at a thing I try to explain graded condition. Their reaction to that will give some indication as to how things will go. But you should be mentally prepared to just be wasting your time doing these pre-sale appraisals. They just want to use you for your mind! They won't be bringing you to meet the family! (If you follow the analogy).

You always gotta have good feed back with sellers and the buyer. Communication is cruel in this hobby, it can make or break your deal. In my experience I've delt with scalpers for comics then again. When are local used bookstore was having a moving sale, someone was buying the stores entire long boxed.

I have a lawless waist line. Wait..you said lawless waste LAND. My mistake. Seriously though - you are 100% right - Do not give people more money than you agreed to. You are rewarding their bad behaviour and making it more likely for them to do it again.

This story is a little bit different. I was renting space in a store mid to late 90s. The owner sold my entire collection of Magic the Gathering cards. In this were cards from the first basic set. Dual lands and all. He used that money to pay his rent. He did not pay me back until after he was kicked out by the landlord. He didn't pay me cash but he did give me two long boxes of comics. There was a nice collection of Avengers comics and a run of other books including New Mutants 1 through 100. At the time he got the better end of the deal. I knew I wasn't seeing the cash so I took what he offered and moved on. It only took 25+ years for that transaction to come back in my favor.

Thats a nuts crazy story. Whenever i have to sell anything, mainly vinyl records back in the day and comics now i just flat out ask half for what i know theyd get for em. I like supporting local shops and am just a friendly haggiler i think. Just cut to the chase. If not i just back out.

That's why I'm double checking my books I'm selling...when I put them out there it's gonna be the price I settled on. No changing at the last minute.

Reminds me of this guy that was selling a captain america comic from the late 60s signed by Kirby or so he claimed. He asked me for $150 back in 2005. After doing a big online investigation (kidding, just 5 mins of google) i was sure that was not Kirby’s signature. The guy wrote it down himself! 😄 he then called me a liar and said to everyone else i wanted to make him look mad because i couldnt afford the “signed” comic. Happily, no one else fell for it.

Appreciate the advice and insight! Hearing these stories always make me be careful with Craigslist sales

I would love it if people were just honest and say “ I changed my mind “ or “I am not going to buy it after all”. Unfortunately I have to deal with people just ghosting on the sale.

I made a deal for a long box of 70's - 80's Marvel and DC. When I got there it was a box of 90's independent titles. I did not buy them.

No real bait and switches, but I’ve been ghosted on more than one occasion. We’ve all heard the dreaded, “I’ll get back to you.”

I agree with you, if I went to someones house and they pulled the bait and switch maneuver like this lady, I wouldnt give them any money at all. It is rewarding bad behavior and they will certainly do it again. No matter how bad I want the item(s).

Great video. I once tried to get a book on eBay and after a week when I followed up on the status I was told they couldn't find the book. They proceeded to say I could choose something else of same value. It might have been an honest mistake but not a great experience.
