As I walked out one winter day I met a man along the way. His was head was bald His beard was gray His clothing made of the cold red clay, His clothing made of the cold red clay. I said "Old man, what happened to you? What country did you belong unto?" "My name is Death, I've come for thee. All kings and princes bow down to me, All kings and princes bow down to me." "I'll give you gold I'll give you pearls I'll give you fine silk robes to wear If you will grant me one season more And give me some time my life to amend, Give me some time my life to amend." "I want no gold I want no pearls I want no fine silk robe to wear. I cannot grant you a season more Nor give you some time your life to amend, Nor give you some time your life to amend." Three short days later that lady died. "Carve this upon my tomb:" she cried "'As I am now, You'll be one day, Your clothing made of the cold red clay, Your clothing made of the cold red clay.'"

Let's not pretend these songs were being sung in Asia or Africa. I hope that isn't what you were alluding to with the last line, it just seemed a little needless, as the rest of the comment is spot-on. These songs can be enjoyed by any race or ethnic group, sure, but spiritually speaking, these are the songs of those of white, European ancestry.
@silvioliu362
@silvioliu362 3 жыл бұрын
@@stonedcrow5821 the instruments that the banjo originated from are from west africa. music is intersectional and universal. humans have always influenced each other, for better or for worse, and music is something that everyone can appreciate.

@@silvioliu362 I never said it wasn't. But you clearly didn't understand, or chose to overlook my central contention, which is that these are historically the folk songs of white Europeans. There is no avoiding that, I'm afraid. And I already said it doesn't preclude anyone of any race from from enjoying them, but let's just stick to telling the truth about the origin and genesis of these songs, shall we? They have nothing to do with Africa, and neither does the Banjo, despite whatever liberal revisionism you are partial to digesting.

That's what music can do. And that's the sort of meaning old songs often had that is missing from most modern music. It's hard to make out sometimes because so many verses got lost or changed, but they tend to be about pretty deep shit in most cases. And I have to put in a word for Sacred Harp singing. Really digging the Leatherstocking output. Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that rock. There's something about the combination of that minimal / primitive style and tone of singing that cuts deep into my psyche. More please.

Greetings from next door in North Carolina, I can play guitar but a banjo is a different instrument. I know some people pick on banjo playing but it's not as easy as some may think. His cover of O death I came across brought me here.

He didn’t wear those gloves to make the outfit work, he wore them just to flex how good he is. I’ve tried playing guitar in gloves and it’s damn near impossible. I know the banjo is different but they’re both string instruments. Great job! 🔥

That's what I was thinking. I don't play so I can't say for sure, but that certainly seems like it would make it damn hard to play. Especially since those gloves didn't even fit very well. Pretty baggy. Makes my cynical side wonder if this audio was recorded separately from the video. Though it looks pretty legit.

I have a collection of folk music from the early 1900s through the 30s, recorded on tinny old-timey equipment so that voices come through like banjo strings. There's a distinct feeling of nostalgia and reflection that carries through that music, and speaks to bygone Americana. I haven't heard anything in a long time that reaches that level - listening to this song was almost eerie because it reminded me of that folk music!

I can't stop watching this every day for over a week now but not the whole thing because it is so heavy. The eye movement side to side 0:15 is chilling. I was born and raised far from Appalachia, in Hawaii a completely different culture and it is a profoundly important to my identity. But I've got roots that go back to the 1700s in one Appalachian valley and some of my people are still there. The old mountain music, the older the better, the ones that go back to the 1700s Scotch-Irish, speak to something profoundly old and deep within my soul - and I didn't even grown up around it.

North Carolina here. I’ll second this motion as I am in western NC and dead in the middle of Appalachia’s blue ridge mountains. Most beautiful place on earth to me. And I’ll set further motion to take pride in our Scotch-Irish accent and colloquial language

Should it matter who you are or where you were raised or who your ancestors were to appreciate a genre of music?
@djfreake
@djfreake 3 жыл бұрын
@@Dontbustthecrust no music is borderless. But the fact remains unless you’ve walked in an appalachians shoes and never hiked the blue ridge trail or been to Linville gorge, and were raised around the old timers you never truly understand what it means and why songs were written with a certain POV. Just like I love intelligent hip hop (Del , MF DOOM) but I will never truly what it feels like to grow up in Watts or NY as a black man. I’m glad you appreciate it as we’ve seen times where the “ol dumb hillbilly” is the butt of the joke, and seen good, hardworking, people taken advantage of. So it’s the old walk a mile in someone else’s shoes deal , but I’m glad you seen the beauty in the tone that was formed from oppression, and hard lives. Thank you for that.

@Brit Sehnsucht and I’m still on the homestead. My new place, the old shotgun house built in 1908 and a fully hand hewn log 2 story home and many hand hewn barns. That hand hewn is 200+ years old and not a nail holding it together other than the tin. And doesn’t leak a drop. My family were all arrested by the g men and a great uncle even escaped jail in a small coal car. Natural springs and creeks and still old stills laying around in the woods. I used to be embarrassed as a teen of my accent but now it’s a badge of honor. Thanks for the awesome reply
