I learned "Unquiet Grave" (Child 78, Roud 51) from a 1960s recording of Hedy West (Cartersville, Georgia) and Doc Watson. "Cold Blows the Wind" is an alternate title.

@@CliftonHicksbanjo oh yeah I was wondering if you could tell my story for me I wrote a spook story my name is Skylar Renee peoples and I have a story years ago a rather vintage looking town there was this family a man a wife and a daughter they had planned a day out when they heard of a place called the white diamond inn it was said it had been demolished and burnt and stroad about and had been vacant for 40 years and was cursed the family didn't listen to the locals and went anyways when they got there it looked like any other normal place the people that worked there was nice so they took their seats ande made their orders the man had steak and vegetables the wife had a bowl of soup and the daughter had a plate of pasta when out of the corner of His eye he noticed a newspaper rack and asked one of the waitresses to bring him one he was given one from the very back it was dusty and old looking but he had read an article that spoke about the white diamond inn claiming the place was burnt and demolished employees had either died from unknown causes or went missing without a trace than he looked in the kitchen area and saw a tall young man stirring something in a tall steel pot the what ever was in the pot had a bad stench but it paid no mind strange enough when he looked around but no one was there he got up and went to the kitchen and aproached the steel pot he was horrified in the pot there was boiling blood and in the blood was a decaying human head he ran out. With his wife and daughter and alerted authorities and when the sheriff got there and checked everything it was burnt torn and stroad about he told the same story the employees either died or unknown causes or went missing without a trace and the white diamond inn had been abandoned for over 40 years

I discovered The unquiet Grave in the 8th grade. It was in my textbook for the meter it uses, as was Sir Patrick Spense & wife of usher's Well. They had no tunes, but being a singer, I found tunes for them, learned them & performed them for decades. I spent my college years in the libraries and singing these in local venues. One can learn history from them.

My grandmother was born in 1904 in Tennessee. I can remember her talking about "going to the city" to play the banjo on the radio with some group. It sounded like it must have been a regular, live show. It also must have been a considerable trip for a poor girl to make in the 1920s. Thank you for keeping the roots of the music from being lost or mainstreamed into wonder bread. Sadly when she and grandpa sold the farm in the 1970s she put the banjo at the farm auction and no one in the family thought to preserve it.

I had a really vivid dream along these same lines just a night or two before you made this video. Had to put on my Rev. Leatherbeak outfit for you Cliff. I was walking up to this small but beautiful house on top of rolling hills. Early spring, green grass and blue sky, scattered budding trees on the rolling hillsides. It felt loverly to say the least. As I walked into the house there was this sealed glass and wooden casket on one side of the room. It looked like an old time wake at a family home, but it had been abandoned for a long time. Inside this glass topped casket were bones, a full skeleton. I raised the glass lid of the casket and the slight sound of air hissing into a vacuumed chamber came from it. The skeleton then gasped and began running it's hands up and down it's bones, and then suddenly slipped and passed away. Just as that occurred a beautiful lady all in white like a wedding dress appeared over my left shoulder. She said "do you know what you just did?" and in a way that spoke to my mind like a thank you, it felt like she kissed the back of my jaw. With a warmth like a ray of sun beaming on your face, and she was gone. That dream was imprinted on my eyes when I woke up, and has stuck with me. Freeing imprisoned souls is a really nice dream. Even when it is a good bit creepy at one moment.

I have to share this story. My brother and I are 10 years apart in age. He is the youngest of four. He died on January 29, 2021. We were best friends. We often shared music with each other late into the night. “Check this song out!” When I started listening to folk and Americana and began learning that the banjo was more than just an instrument on Deliverance, I reluctantly shared this beautiful music with him. He liked metal, EDM, and rap. But he was also a brilliant musician and could pick up any instrument and pick out a song by ear. He loved the talent and musicianship of a good banjo picker. He loved bluegrass and the stories sung through the lyrics. And I loved him all the more for it. I woke up on February 6, 2021 to get ready for his memorial service. I stood in front of my bathroom mirror and stared at my reflection and realized that I’d never be the same again. My favorite person, the one who knew my dreams and darkest demons, the one who I protected and who did the same for me, the one who was truly my twin, born a decade later (almost to the very day) was gone forever. How do I live without him? For some reason, as I stood there in front of that mirror trying to will myself to get dressed, I opened up my KZbin app. And this video was staring back at me. A skull - death. On this day of all days. A song - about death. On this day of all days. And a man holding a banjo - that beautiful, timeless instrument. On this day of all days. And I knew. Aaron was right there with me, sending his love the only way he and I knew how - through music. This video is the first of many signs that I’ve been given since he left this earth. I come back here often to remember him and the gift that he gave me when I was just beginning my journey with grief. Music transcends all. Thank you for being a bridge between my heart here on earth and his soul up in the ethers. For all time, sweet brother.

Most of these didn't start out in the mountains of America. They were brought over with the IMMIGRANTS from Ireland and Scotland when they had to leave. These have been passed from parent to child over the centuries and frequently it is difficult to tell how they started. Words and tunes get changed, but the story lives on. Get your hands on the Frances James Child collections and you'll find almost all of these ballads many of which have tunes.

Oh death and oh life, Oh ease and old strife, My leather licks my knife, Wearing me away. Bearing for flight on weight of light, On breath We fly away. - Just a poem for all of us inspired by this ageless tune. Thank you for this wonderful work of Old Art.

I always watch your eyes 100% the 2nd time on your old leatherstocking videos purely for the entertainment of the exaggerated movement. It fits the look skull with some big ol eyes

I think it's the mortality in the leather stocking song that really resonates. I am a fan all around.

I truly love listening to everything you remake. It makes me proud of my Appalachian English/Irish heritage. It makes me realize in my older age how deep these folk songs run. Also, I adore Old Leatherstocking.

Cold blows the wind over my true love Cold blows the drops of rain I never had but one true love And in Camville he was slain I'll do as much for my true love as any young girl may I'll sit and weep down by his grave for twelve month and one day But when twelve months were come and gone This young man he arose What makes you weep down by my grave I can't take my repose One kiss, one kiss of your lily white lips, one kiss is all I crave One kiss, one kiss of your lily white lips and return back to your grave My lips they are as cold as my clay My breath is heavy and strong If thou was to kiss my lily white lips Thy days would not be long Oh don't you remember the garden grove where we used to walk Pluck the finest flower of them all, twill wither to a stalk Go fetch me a nun from the dungeon deep And water from a stone And white milk from a maiden's breast, That babe ere never known Go dig me a grave both long, wide and deep as quickly as you may I'll lie down in it and take one sleep for twelve month and one day Cold blows the wind over my true love Cold blows the drops of rain I never had but one true love And in Camville he was slain I'll do as much for my true love as any young girl may I'll sit and weep down by his grave for twelve month and one day
