I'm just going through your vlogs now. I love your hiking style, long days hiking and plenty of miles and no excuses. With your miles, you are around 5000-5500 calories a day for need and that is a lot of eating. I think sometimes when you hike like you do, it is hard to be eating all the time when you are hiking, but you almost need to be eating every hour and then have calorie dense breakfast, lunch, and dinners too.

Thanks for sharing some nuts and bolts about your hike and the reality of how it can affect the body. I'm really enjoying your journey. Congrats on finishing the Sierra in style with your wife.

Enjoying your videos. Happy to see you’re not ignoring what your body is telling you. I know carrying extra food is more weight but that’s better than the body breaking down and not being able to complete the hike. And, the more you eat, the lighter the pack gets. 😊😊

Atta boy Mike! So glad the trail magic and family were there for this part of the pct. Love to follow and share in your journey. Keep showing us the beauty, joy and challenges the trail presents to a hiker. Looking forward to the next chapter of this vlog. Cheers!

Amazing how fast the snow melt is this year. Sure will make it easy for staying on trail and avoiding extra miles.

50 years ago the Boy Scouts knew that fats had about twice the energy value per ounce relative to carbs or protein foods. So my pack always had extra cheese, chocolate, nuts, and sardines. Sure, dehydrated meals too, but I still think the addition of healthy fats is a better way to reduce pack weight than strict "hydrophobia." These days you can even get powdered MCT oil!

Your weight loss - that's a tough problem. On one hand, eating "empty" calories isn't good - we all know that. But, on the other hand, the weight of "healthy" calories makes them too prohibitive to carry. That's an awful fine line, my friend. I'd be interested in hearing how you solved the problem. Thanks for the videos of the trail, and taking the time to publish. I'm enjoying them.

Some of your video clips are reversed. Is that on purpose? A great story either way. :-)

It's my phone camera. I tried reversing them during editing but the program would reverse the audio as well.

Yeah it’s a bear to suffer from malnourishment which can happen when you are going through the sierras. It’s hard to carry enough food cuz of the weight as you go over so many passes without even a possibility of trail magic. The northern sierras from Yosemite to Tahoe is gorgeous and not so unrelenting. I’ve driven thru those areas so trail magic is much more accessible. You should be seeing more the rest of northern CA. What a beautiful part of the world you are getting to see.
