Totally relate, my close friend’s beautiful daughter and her partner, barely just twenty one, committed suicide at the time OK was issued. A gorgeously warm bright young girl with so much ahead of her. I still absolutely adore the song but it breaks my heart with every listen...throws me right back to the day I received the news. I couldn’t have felt more sorrow for my friend if I tried, still can’t, as her daughter was an only child. Unbelievably heartbreaking song for me personally but gorgeous none the less.

In May 1997 I was 27 years old and working in a government server farm, 12 hour night shifts. We had a decent CD player that could be heard across the entire hall. Gavin bought this CD in and popped it on the player around 11pm. There were complaints. Bob, shift leader, in his early 60s a rock and roll fan; Raj, also 60s, huge bollywood fan; Sam, the archetypal raver; Stephen, the clean cut northern soul groupie. End of the first track, complaining subsided, grudging interest ensued. By track three we were all entranced. When it ended, we put it on again. When it ended, we put it on again. When it ended, we put it on ag.... you get the idea. It was all we listened to that night. Finished my shift, drove into town and bought the CD that morning. I listened to it again as I fell asleep. 23 years later, I'm still listening to it. Sam, I've never watched your channel before. KZbin randomly threw this in the mix. Johnny Greenwood is the best thing about radiohead, even when he doesn't have a guitar. Mate, that was so beautiful to watch. In '95 at the age of 11, my parents sent me to boarding school in the UK from Taiwan. With only a handful of English at the time and ignorant of the Western way of life, everything confused me. When I eventually made some friends, they introduced British culture to me and I remember listening to OK Computer with them for the first time and even without completely understanding the lyrics it opened up my heart and mind and I was able to accept the confusion with which I was living because Radiohead had allowed me to emotionally connect with my friends. Watching this video reminded me of that and it's truly beautiful to see how the music touched you the same way it has and still does with me. I didn't know about this channel at all before this video, but once again thanks to Radiohead, I've discovered more ace people in the world. You're wicked, mate. Look after yourself.

I used to really clown on Radiohead, especially Thom bc he was such a wounded soul who hated being famous. Of course, my way of internalizing it to fit my narrative was extremely myopic, dismissive, and annoying. Being the stubborn young twat I was, I always felt they were just an average band with a few catchy songs but I didn’t think there was anything special about them. I still remember watching Meeting People is Easy on MTV (they aired the entire documentary one night) and my initial reaction was telling my friend, “hey let’s watch this so we can make fun of them for being miserable Rock Stars”. Very quickly, I realized there was way more to this band than I had ever given them credit for. Midway through I tell my friend, “I hate to say this but, they’re actually kind of good”. I had just dismissed them as a trendy rock band who fit the mold of what was current at the time. By the end of the doc (I was so compelled, I watched the entire film), I had completely changed my opinion of the band. They had “actual talent”. I literally went to the record store and bought OK Computer a few days later and listened to it with so much care and attention. And I kept listening to it daily. Then I got all the singles from OKC and loved their b-sides and remixes. I had become such a Radiohead fan when Kid A was being recorded, I literally couldn’t wait until the record was released. Listening to Kid A for the first time, as a fully converted fan still remains one of my favorite experiences ever. I was very fortunate to see them tour in support of Amnesiac just a year later. At that time they were still playing a good chunk of songs from The Bends and it was pretty special to hear all those songs covering a big range of styles. I’ve seen them about 5-6 more times and they never disappoint. I’m a massive fan by now.

This was almost my journey to a tee. Scoffed when a coworker put OKC into the tape deck but I knew right from the sleigh bells that this was something different and special as much as I wanted to not accept that. By the third listen, I was fully on board. Became a fantic before Kid A came out and also got to see them for Amnesiac (Beta Band opened in Vancouver). That was like 20 years ago, my god. Radiohead is the greatest band of a generation.

Andrew Rhodes well I mean it’d be good to listen to anyway, it’s really healthy to hear criticism of things you’re a fan of because it provides insight into what people disagree on. This album means so much to me. I was 18 when it came out. Having tested for a high IQ at school, I was labelled a "child prodigy" and told I would change the world. My life was set out for me from that point with no consideration for what I actually wanted. Well, the pressure of all this, and the stress of having my fate in the hands of others, took a heavy toll on me and by 18, mounting mental health issues had derailed my education. At that point I just wanted to be like my friends. I wanted to earn a bit of money and be a teenager. So I got a job as a Christmas temp in my local record shop, a branch of Our Price here in the UK. This was October 1997. I was all very exciting. I loved being around music all day, and especially having my musical horizons broadened by getting to listen to basically every single record that came out. Practically every week I discovered a new band that found a place in my top ten. But this experience also came with a huge amount of disillusionment. The more I learned about the music industry, the more I realised it was just a big sausage machine. No-one in higher management seemed to know or care very much about music. The "recommended" panel in the shop was actually sponsored, places on it having been paid for by the record companies. Nothing there was chosen by merit, and the same applied to the music played in store. For all but one golden hour of the day, we had to play music specified, i.e paid for, by the record companies. As Christmas neared, the workload increased dramatically, and all the fun began to be sucked out of it. I was going to work so early it was still dark, and it would be dark long before I headed home. The shop had no windows, and being permanently short-staffed by the financial pinch felt by retailers at that time, especially music retailers, lunch breaks were a luxury we couldn't afford. So I often went a week without seeing the Sun, and work consisted of serving a long queue of increasingly impatient and ill-tempered customers the latest pop CDs to have bought their way into the charts. Everything had become about money, shifting the latest CDs the record companies wanted to push, in as big a volume as possible. But one album in the charts at the time caught my attention. As it happened, OK Computer was on the playlist, and it captured my attention in a way that nothing else had done before, and has not done since. The lamentation, the sense of alienation, the unashamedly depressive nature of it. The sense of someone sliding inexorably down a spiral of a life turned cold and grey by the disillusionment of growing up and discovering the world is not full of magic and wonder, but rather, it's a mechanical and cynical place, and growing up means being shackled to a treadmill and made to endure a grim life of someone else's design, and for someone else's profit. It was, as all our most cherished albums tend to be, a seemingly bespoke soundtrack to my life. The dynamic nature of it, the unpredictable mood swings captured by the range of instrumentation, tempo and volume, from maudlin sentimentality to fulminating anger. It was the embodiment of every aspect of my disposition, which had at that point been diagnosed as bipolar, encompassing everything I was feeling, and everything that had been bottled up for the last few years. I can't say it cheered me up. Radiohead is probably not the best thing for that, but at the very least, it made me feel a little less alone in my plight. This life may be grim, as compared to what I had imagined in any case, but I was not suffering alone. I immediately put a copy aside, bought it that evening, and listened to it, pretty much on repeat, for the rest of the year and beyond. It is still firmly in my top five favourite albums of all time, the only one from the 90s to have that honour. When I listen to it now, and I frequently do, it reminds me of being 18, and brings with it a rush of all those emotions I was going through at the time. It is funny, but tragic to think, that with the benefit of hindsight, those were the best days of my life.

Izzy of Albion doesn’t always post YT comments, but when he does... I graduated high school in 1995 and tracked this album along in life similar to your story. People say RH is depressing- I say no way. They’re so good I feel validated and human and ultimately things will be OK even if I get depressed. It’s normal and even beautiful to be at the fringes of emotion, even as we are coming to realize that life isn’t full of magic as you described. @vinyljunkies This album being a masterpiece means it stands on its own in any time, but if you were a formative 18-22 when this came out and then watched the landscape of music ripple out from the bow of its wake- MAN that was livin.
@Ozzpot4 жыл бұрын
@@PhaedruS007 I think you've got something there Paul. I wonder if Radiohead's effect on mood is subjective, relative to one's default disposition. I suppose a happy person might listen to "Exit Music" or "No Surprises" and be brought down by it. On the other hand, a depressive might find solidarity therein, and with it a glimmer of light in the otherwise inky, all-consuming darkness. This is lithium in musical form. Radiohead is our generation's Pink Floyd I think. The same complaints about these things that timelessly plague the human condition apply to both, and both bands apply their philosophies so beautifully to hypnotic and progressive instrumentation. OK Computer is not dissimilar to "Wish You Were Here", "Animals", perhaps even "The Wall" in ideology and mood. Those of us contemporary to it should consider ourselves lucky that it has become part of us, hardwired into our brains during those formative years, forever to course through our veins, but you're dead right, just like the timeless efforts of Pink Floyd, this album is a masterpiece no matter what generation you belong to.

Watching you listen to OK Computer for the first time brought up so many emotions of my first time. I was a 15 year old kid, dealing with my parents getting divorced, not fitting in with my peers, just trying to find my place in the world. And Radiohead, and the community around Radiohead got me through that. But I was still brought to tears during Exit Music (For a Film) just like I often did in my room late at night as a teenager. Thom York on Bono: 'The difference between me and Bono is that he's quite happy to go and flatter people to get what he wants and he's very good at it, but I just can't do it. I'd probably end up punching them in the face rather than shaking their hand, so it's best that I stay out of their way. I can't engage with that level of bullshit. Which is a shame, really, and in a way it would help if I could, but I just can't. I admire the fact that Bono can, and can walk away from it smelling of roses.' Epic reaction, bro.

The album starts with airbag, a song about thom in a car accident and how an airbag saved his life and the album ends with the tourist, a song about getting into a car accident so the album can be played in a loop

@@tonyshazam6271 you can weave the songs back and forth from ok computer and in rainbows. Google puddlegum Radiohead to read the theory.

dastrn it’s very hard to find a crossfader that does that playlist justice but if u can find one it’s uncanny how it kinda works. There’s also alot of clues that led to someone finding that signature. Spose u could just dj it yourself, that would really work but it would be a bit distracting coz i just want to listen with Radiohead. Not look at screens, drink, smoke, talk, etc etc... audiophile alert 🚨

It's very clever that the last sound on the album somehow makes you want to listen to Airbag straight away.

i just gotta tell you how much I enjoyed you enjoying OK Computer. You brought me back to the first time I heard it in August 1997. I listened to it in bed with headphones on after a night out with friends. I remember crying during many parts as the sound combinations opened deep chambers of my soul I didn't know existed. It felt as if the ghosts of my ancestors had been awakened - it was a mourning for the loss of being human and a reluctant embrace of a new world to come.

I've never considered this: knowing what Thom Yorke looks like is sorta integral to understanding the sounds that come out of his throat.

Kid A is the album that got me into Radiohead. Really connected with it. I was living in Tokyo and the music and environment and my lifestyle at the time created a crazy harmony. That album kept me sane, no joke or exaggeration. Props to what you’re doing here dude.

Four months later. Maybe you’ve realized this but “Lucky” doesn’t stick out for the first many listens because it doesn’t have the production gimmicks but it’s one of the best songs on the records and best lyrics- “the head of state has called for me by name, but I don’t have time for him. It’s gonna be a glorious day- I feel my luck could change.” Beautiful song to play on guitar and sing if you can sing well enough

I think it was the first song they wrote for the album and they did it right after The Bends, so I guess that's why it sounds so different.

Seriously great video. Out of the 350+ vinyl albums I own (collected for over 30 years and including many genres from classical to modern music) Radiohead have 3 which are firmly seated in my personal top 10 of all time list. Those being OK Computer, Kid A and In Rainbows. Really glad you liked this album so much. Although I do like the albums Pablo Honey and The Bends ( although to a lesser extent), this album is where the band really came into their own and took-off. From here on their albums get more complex, experimental, artistic, mature and nuanced. All of which are great albums. Their next album, Kid A, is their most experimental album and a big departure from their first three. It's also my personal favorite of their entire catalogue and one of my personal favorite albums of all time. Possibly my favorite but it's hard to pick a single favorite when you have between three and four hundred albums in your mind and counting. Many of which being masterpieces. Judging by your impressive collection I'm sure you can understand what I mean. Kid A is one that takes many listens to fully appreciate due to it's overall depth and complexity. Due to this most people aren't sure what to think upon first hearing it but after subsequent listens they end up connecting with it and realizing it's brilliance. It's one that grows and grows on you over time. Make sure to give it your undivided attention and be open minded when you listen to it. Also read up on it before hand to get an idea of it's concepts as they can be difficult to discern at first but are very clever and meaningful. (It's artwork is also the best of any of their albums.) * I also just wanted to say that I completely understand and appreciate what you said about being able to connect better to art than people growing up as I was the same way. My childhood was very abusive which led to me being an introvert and loner in school. I just didn't like people very much for a lot of my life. That led me to diving heavily into music from an early age forward and allowed me to develop a deep understanding of it and art as a whole. I was always looking for the next best thing. Steering away from pop music, for the most part, and looking for those hidden gems that touch the subtle emotional parts of my mind that are either rarely reached or I didn't know were there previously. *Kid A* is one of those albums. Same with *In Rainbows* . *Recommendations:* Also some lesser known albums you may or may not have heard of like *Fever Ray (2009 self titled)* (the first solo album by Karin Dreijer Anderson) and *Boards of Canada's* album's *Geogaddi* and *Music has the Right to Children* , which are also seated in my top ten of all time. Some of the very best experimental electronic ambient music I've ever heard in my life right there (as I'm very well versed in the genre). If you're not familiar, do yourself a massive favor and check those out. Just understand they are in the genre of experimental/electronic/ambient. They are life changing works which have the ability to further open the mind to just what music is capable of and where it can go emotionally. A couple other seriously great albums by *Boards of Canada* are *The Campfire Headphase* , *Trans Canada Highway* and *A Beautiful Place Out in the Country* . They are true masterpieces of the genre and highly sought out by vinyl collectors and music lovers. Seriously brilliant stuff but *Geogaddi* and *Music Has the Right to Children* should be heard first. I'd love to see and hear your reactions to these at some point if you're so intrigued. out of everything I've heard in my life these two artists are the ones I suggest to you. While they are a bit different I think you'll be able to understand why I chose them. As far as *Fever Ray* is concerned the first, self titled album is by and far the best one and the only one by her I submit. Please consider these recommendations. * Great video by the way. Really enjoyed it. I just subscribed and look forward to going through your videos and seeing what else you have to offer.

well... i completely broke down in furious tears along with him with that transition from Exit Music to Let Down when Thom sings "And when it comes it's so, so disappointing..." Yikes... maybe it's the PTSD but sometimes you forget how emotionally powerful radiohead can be.

This album means so much to me. So many meaningful life moments have been framed by songs on OKC. Example: I remember playing the album the first night in my new apartment after splitting up with my life partner. I was broken, devastated and felt truly disconnected from reality. Scared. I put on OKC, rolled a joint, opened a window over the street below, turned off the lights, sat down and listened. During Let Down I suddenly found myself being serenaded by a group of young fans as they passed by under my window. It was at that moment, listening to a group of strangers singing my favorite song off the album, that I knew I'd be whole again. At that moment everything was perfect, no regrets about the past and no anxiety about the future. "For a minute there / I lost myself". Thank you, Radiohead and the group of fans who brought me back from a pit of despair. And thank you Vinyl Junkies for the memories. Peace✌
