I get why you might think that, but truly, when you get to the stage of work where you are doing miniscule things like painting those dots, it's a state of zen/flow that is really, deeply restorative. I don't restore, but I do paint and draw, and the tiny stuff always looks so daunting, but when I finally do it, it's such a good and satisfying teacher of being patient and taking life slow.

There was a case like that that made international news recently, where the restorer did permanent damage to the original paint and made Jesus look like a Picasso painting. (I forget the artist/work in question, maybe someone here can recall.)

In one video he said that all the materials he uses are non-permanent, so glue and paint can easily removed again. Also, he tests the solvant in a non-visual area first, to see if it harms the painting, making it quite unlikely to cause permanent damage. The Jesus-Restauration was not done by a professional, that's why it was so hard to fix it again-because he used regular paint

such beautiful work. it's so relaxing to watch, and at the same time it's kind of a thrill to know you're seeing it as the artist intended, sometimes hundreds of years ago. watching the colors leap out from under that old varnish, seeing all the little details that had been obscured, and knowing this is closer to what the painting looked like when the original artist stepped back and said "yep, it's done" lol. it's all fascinating to me. thanks so much for posting these videos.

This is the fourth video of yours that I watched. It was the first silent one but after your in-depth descriptions from the other video I completely understood what you were doing. These videos are hypnotic and I wish I could paint and color match with such accuracy
@kgrobinson0075 жыл бұрын
As many others have said, these videos are truly fascinating. Do you ever want to get the grime annalized to find out what has made the painting so dirty? I'm guessing the obvious contributors are soot from a fireplace, tar from tobacco, and general atmospheric dust and dirt in addition to the aged varnish. I can't even imagine the first-hand satisfaction of seeing the reveal of what is under all the layers of grime and yellowed varnish. As a viewer, the satisfaction level is pretty high. Do you listen to music or podcasts while you're retouching the paint? I can really see how you would end up in your own little world as time flies by while working on something like this where you are working on all those little points of lost paint.
@BaumgartnerRestoration5 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, the more difficult the retouching the less I listen to anything. I often work in silence so that I'm focused solely on what I do and not distracted.
