Part 2 here: • A New Dawn: The Restor...
Every now and then a project comes into the studio that is so desperate for intervention that the scope of the work involved seems insurmountable. Yet those are just the types of projects conservators thrive on; the ones that look disastrous, require a phenomenal amount of work and creativity but if treated right and with care and precision will respond beautifully.
Such is the case with this copy of Guido Reni's masterpiece "L'Aurora". Though the artist is unknown it was clearly executed with great skill and for a copy the scale is rather impressive. The same cannot be said about its condition. Having suffered water damage there is a tremendous amount of paint loss and what paint remains is perilously attached to the canvas. Several massive holes, tears, and canvas losses have also threatened the structural integrity of the work. Suffice it to say this will be a magnum opus of conservation.
But that's what we live for.

@@beelieboo “Thanks!” l was trained at CCSF as a fine artist back in the late 60’s. It was a two years special Fine Art Program. By the end of the program I was the only one that competed the program out of 112 students. The professor taught me everything they knew. Afterwards, I end up being excepted to UC BERKELEY in their fine art program. They couldn’t teach me anything new because I had mastered all my fundamental art skills and my creative thinking process. So, I end up challenging myself and they didn’t like that. That was when they asked me to leave. Seeing, Julian approach problem solving has got my creative juices flowing again. (And Julian, I still like to use the stable gun to attach my canvas to the frame. I’m too old to change, and I don’t like the taste of metal in my mouth.) My style is surrealism. I like to bring everything together and make the viewer think. Get them to participate is part of message you try to get the viewer participant. Thank you again for your kind thoughts, it only encouraged me to get working on my oils again. (If you want, you can see a few of my drawing I started doing on birds.) Thanks again for your kind thoughts.

I was watching a video about the Mona Lisa a few days ago and apparently the paint pigments themselves break down over time. For example, a lot of the greenish skies we see used to be a super vibrant blue when painted. The red pigments used for skintone break down and become overpowered by the white pigment. Leaving all these white people looking *extra* white. I'm not an expert or anything, just parroting what I remember hearing a couple days ago.

Watching you clean this painting gave me food for thought about the current realities of photo editing. I always start out thinking what a shame it is that you are losing that lovely golden color cast given by the aged varnish and end up appreciating the more vibrant colors that are revealed. I generally try to make people (and other things) appear as close to the way I remember seeing them when I took the photo as I can when I am doing basic editing. And, when I am editing a photo for more than just aligning the way the camera sees to the way I see, I let my own personal vision of the photo I thought I was taking direct my "brush" in adding a bit of light or shadow for emphasis here and there. I appreciate the way painters direct the eye in a painting. It's an education in itself to just look at them and think about where the eye is directed in a painting.

Julian, I’m sure you’ll never see this, but on the off-chance you do, I just wanted to thank you for the calm, self-assured way you speak about your craft. I struggle a lot with imposter syndrome and doubt myself even when I know that I have the knowledge. Hearing you change your, “We’re in luck this worked,” to, “Well, not luck-years of practice so that I know what to expect,” makes a great mental template for me to reframe my thoughts. Super deep for something small, I know, but I’ve noticed it in several videos and it’s resonated with me. I’m sure that wasn’t your intent 😂, but thank you nevertheless. Your words and demeanor are always so thoughtfully chosen.

Cauchemar seeing as he worked on this painting for probably close to a year it was probably closer to 100k than anything. It was immensely damaged and very large. Even small paintings are several thousand dollars to have restored so this one was probably a large investment to have restored.

Whoever painted this, if it wasn't the original artist, they did a crazy good job. Going back and forth between the copy you're repairing and the original is impressive.
