Love it. Just used this trick the other day to test a temperature controller that was acting up. Needed below 0C but couldn't generate it with the wind tunnel down. Wouldn't have thought about it if it weren't for messing around with a can of it in the back. Every once in awhile a few of the loose wires in the brain box short and something miraculous happens. Simply amazing when horsing around gets valuable results.

Just about lol. Seriously though, sometime in January last year, maybe the year prior, my dad left a bottle of Jack on the porch. It was frozen solid the next day. It was -40C/F -52C with windchill that night. That's up north though, where winter lasts from about mid October to the end of April. When I first started working as an engineer, the older engineers call that stuff "Technician in a can". We actually get stuff marketed as freeze spray though. Not sure exactly what the difference is, but it is helpful. We make products that have to operate @ -40C, since we can't get in the chamber to debug at -40, we use that stuff to freeze parts of the board to find where the problem is.

Let me just expand on this.. When buying a can of air duster for cooling purposes, first find out what's in the can. Read the label or look up the MSDS (material data safety sheet) on the product. Some of them are just a butane/propane mix, which is very flammable - not something you would want cooling a PCB while it's powered on. But it does work for cooling. Ideally you want the air duster cans using CFCs (inert chloro-fluoro-carbons), this is the type of refrigerant used in A/C etc. It's not flammable.

Aaaaand many aerosols these days proudly claim to be CFC-free, what for not turning the Ozone layer into swiss cheese.
@TheAmmoniacal
@TheAmmoniacal 8 жыл бұрын
Large-scale release of CFCs is not good for the ozone layer, but the amount used in household A/Cs and air duster cans is insignificant.
@russell6167
@russell6167 8 жыл бұрын
+TheAmmoniacal I didn't say it was significant, but, at least where I live, it's hard to find any aerosols which contain CFCs.. and the reasoning the manufacturers give is that isobutane and similar propellants are "ozone friendly"

The propellant used in most of these air dusters is R-134a same refrigerant used in most car ac systems nowadays. It doesn't contain chlorine like most of your older refrigerants it's an HFC (hydroflourocarbon) so it's considered "ozone safe" just remember that this stuff is still heavier than air when it boils off it displaces the oxygen in a room. So don't use a lot in a small unventilated space.

If you cool acetone with dry ice, you can get it even colder than this. Dry ice sublimates at negative 78.5 Celsius, and acetone doesn't freeze until negative 95 Celsius, meaning you can make a very cold liquid bath. This would also probably end up being cheaper if you're doing this to multiple parts at once.

Having experience an empty CO2 Fire Extinguisher when I really needed one, then a second empty one, I can tell you that my reaction to someone misusing a CO2 Fire Extinguisher wouldn't be cool at all. Even CO2 must be taken in for recharging even if used just for a second or two. The valves will no longer be guaranteed to seal perfectly and it's very likely that well within a year it will be effectively EMPTY. I used the same method to freeze box elder bugs. You have to be careful, cuz if you blast them too hard at first you just blow them away. You have to sneak up and get them a small shot to freeze them in their tracks.

If you weren't aware, these dusters are simple R134a refrigerant, usually with something to make them taste terrible to stop abuse. That chemical also leaves residue. If you wanted something that doesn't leave that residue, just pick up the real deal.

The trick I learned many years ago is to use a CO2 fire extinguisher, put part in a shop rag, then fold rag over nozzle and blast away, it fills the rag with solid CO2 and freezes the part. Wear gloves and eye protection, do not try at home, yada yada yada disclaimer.

+AvE I've never put the IR gun to it to record a temperature drop, if you need a thou or so for fitment acetone rag works if a freezer is impractical. I'd assume the duster is colder as the solvent seems to be a bit more volatile, plus the release of the compressed gas has its own cooling effect.

I used to keep the plastic tops off aerosol tins from the larger diameter types for this very purpose (put the part inside then spray to reduce the amount of gas needed). You can also now get the non-Freon type freezer sprays for electronics work, except they don't work any better than this trick and cost a truckload more.

The thickness of a human hair generally ranges from 2 to 5 thousandths of an inch. Most hair will be around .003" of an inch. Hair is a little thicker in the nether regions as well, and is sometimes used as a standard of measure in many machine shops.

You can use dry ice crushed in acetone to get it to about -75c. It is much less volatile, and available at the grocery stores (well at least the dry ice is) Just don't put it in a sealed container. It's got to vent or you get some extreme pressured with it.
@superduty4556
@superduty4556 6 жыл бұрын
The "solvent" he's referring to is actually a refrigerant - R152a. It is an acceptable substitute for R12 or R134a. R134a used to be the refrigerant in there, too. Odd that it's illegal to release R134a into the atmosphere but it's fine to spray your keyboard with this stuff.

If you take a paper towel/shop rag and run it under hot water and wrap it around the can, the can will blast for longer. The same effect that you are taking advantage of (It takes more energy to go from a liquid to a gas) is what lowers the pressure of the cans as you use them up.
