Loads of people crying that classics are being converted to electric, having owned 2 classics myself, this is genius, reducing spanner time, breakdowns etc. Means I could spend more time driving and sharing my classic instead of hiding ina shed fixing it, shame about the cost but that will come down, range will get better. I hazard a guess that there are a massive number of classic car owners who would love to run theirs daily, this would allow it

Oh please the original engine was almost as underpowered as a beetle, yes it ads character but I would gladly sacrifice that to have a classic daily driver, plus if the engine and associated pollution mean that much to you why not keep the original as a running display? An awful lot of classics end up at the scrapyard because owners spend so much on mechanicals they cant restore the rest as well as needed and they are only putting off the inevitable decay of the rest. Out of curiosity what classics have you owned?
@OdykKayne2 жыл бұрын
@@Alnilam1973 I can understand that and I imagine most classic cars will have to be converted one day....but at the same time, if you put a modern drivetrain in a classic....is it still REALLY a classic? Sure, it looks like one and feels like one, but if it doesn't act like one, it's not the same as it originally was in it's time, so I'm torn on EV conversions. :( I honestly think I'm still with @Martin Laver on this one...plus the conversion costs are nuts from most companies. You mention the cost of restoring mechanicals...I can't see taking any older Mini in decent shape and spending $35k pounds like this conversion costs to get it running again in ICE form...and it would have more range than this! 0_o
@Alnilam19732 жыл бұрын
I'm not suggesting that all classic should be converted but there is a sizable pro column for it and there is always sustainable fuels or conversion kits like the rim wheel that can replace the non driven wheels and give you a hybrid that takes a few hours to swich back for your show day or sale time, personally the rim wheel is the most promising idea but all these techs still need maturing to see the drawbacks, maybe a combo of all will win out but alas I dint have the cash to even consider running a classic atm not to mention a restoration

Coupling a manual gearbox with an electric motor makes sense because it enables using more affordable electric motors. Sure, the bulk of the cost of electric cars today are the batteries but then it would be the motors that use rare earth materials and complex electronics and control. Cheaper motors would be limited by speed and torque they produce, so coupling it with gears would make a lot of sense. Furthermore, motors like switched reluctance motors, while promising since they don't use rare earth and expensive materials, have little torque compared to induction and permanent magnet motors, but they are still efficient and coupling it with gears would make sense. That being said, 35k still isn't cheap. As other comments say, might as well get a new electric compact and then keep the Mini as it is as a weekend ride. Although, it seems that we are coming to the point where electric cars will become too expensive to insure due to significant danger of setting themselves on fire.

@@grandtourerpt The EV conversions are a money maker that's why they do them. Buy a 1994 mini (costing not a lot) then convert it and charge 35k PLUS vat as a starting price, KaChing! I totally agree that buying a new EV is the way to go although I also can see the interest in wanting a pretty silent old mini as a local shopping cart.
