I have a MY 2000 Rover Mini Cooper as my current daily, it's an amazing everyday car. It's cheap to tax and insure. It's great on fuel. I filled it up two weeks ago and have done nearly 200 miles, and it's just hit half a tank. It's so small that you can park it anywhere, so easy to work on (albeit quite cramped to get tools in), and it may be because I'm in the UK but getting parts for it isn't hard. Get yourself in the good books of a garage, and they'll let you bring the parts, and they'll do labour. I pull up to a caffeine and machine, and it's always put out front. Obviously, there are downsides. It's uncomfortable over speed humps, no crash protection really, no way to diagnose problems without doing the manual labour and obviously other things that come with owning an old British car. Being chumy with a garage is essential. Most places have turned me away because it actually requires manual work to do things. I paid £8500 for my Mini earlier this year, paid another £1000 to get it through its MOT, and it's been faultless. It has genuinely not let me down yet.

@DiscoFang3 ай бұрын
@@drewhender3999Yeah there’s compromises both ways. The suspension becomes moot because the range limits of the SE mean it can’t be used for a typical weekend trip 85kms north of the city to a wine and farm area. A place we stay is a few hundred meters from the end of the driveway. The owners intentionally did it that way to get the cars away from the house. No other realistic charge options within 40kms. So the SE is strictly a city car which makes the S more versatile.

@@barsaf9989 Look up BMW's B48 engine and you'll see how much easy potential they have. The major issue with these cars is the lack of LSD. Torque steer is MONSTER! Lack of steering feel, understeer, weird throttle mapping, transmission calibration, and the size and weight. How come these weigh so much? A minor nitpick: At 21:27 Marty mentions the stopping distances of the cars and references the weight difference of the cars This is a misconception I see all over the place but all things being equal except the mass of the car, the mass will not affect the stopping distance. A car that weights 2 tonnes will slow down at roughly 1g and so will a car that ways 0.7 tonnes. The deceleration, stopping distance and stopping time are all independent of mass. I think the reason people get this confused is because when speeding up the mass of a car makes a huge difference because the limiting factor for most cars is the power output and torque of the engine. However the brakes in a properly designed car can exert enough torque on the wheels to lock them at any speed, so the limiting factor becomes the grip of the tires, which is not affected by mass. The most obvious example of this is that a motorcycle weights like 10x less than a car, but it does not slow down 10x faster. If you really want to get technical about it, the more mass you have, the more kinetic energy you have to deal with at a given speed, but the more mass you have, the more normal force your tires exert on the road. Mass ends up canceling out.

So you telling me an empty car braking from 100km/h will stop in X distance, but put your 4 big mates from the gym in it and a boot full of kettle bells and repeat the test it will stop in the same distance?
@_chipchip4 ай бұрын
@@aaronharley8691No he’s not saying that. Just that weight isn’t the only factor. In your example, tyres will be the main factor regardless of weight.
@BobBobson4 ай бұрын
"so the limiting factor becomes the grip of the tires, which is not affected by mass." What? Take an empty wheelbarrow, have a mate hold it up so it's only on the wheel, and pull it sideways. Put 50 kg of whatever in it, and try that again. If the grip of the tire hasn't changed then it'll be just as easy to slide as when empty.
@TheXero4164 ай бұрын
@@aaronharley8691 Yes that is true. As long as the extra mass you're adding doesn't overwhelm the brakes, the car will slow down at about the same rate. In reality it's a bit more complicated, for example where you add the extra mass matters, if you add all of the mass in front of the front wheel of the car, it will absolutely perform worse
@TheXero4164 ай бұрын
@@BobBobson What you're describing is friction, that does scale with mass because the normal force on the tire increases. However the coefficient of friction of that tire doesn't change when you add your 50 kg to the wheel barrow, meaning how sticky the tire is. That extra friction helps when you're trying to slow down, but because you've added more mass to the thing it's also harder to slow down, those two things cancel out.

Owned a few classic minis, one vxr powered, best driving experience of my life. Never driven a bmw mini, was always in the hater crew. But over the last few years they really have become modern classics. Taylor from auto Alex also has one of each….and loves both…and I can see why.
@MrManBuzz4 ай бұрын
The people who hate on modern Minis have never driven one. Do yourself a favour, get a spin in a well sorted R53. You'll want one.
@DiscoFang3 ай бұрын
Yeah, but until you try one don't let actual lack of experience get in the way of having a strong opinion. But be aware Taylor's one is completely different car from this one. Post 2014 F56 model is when they changed to BMW drivetrain. NOTHING in the car - running gear, interior, exterior, anyhting - was carried over the generations after 2014. (Except the JCW R56 that continued a few years.) Those previous gens are unreliable and truly awful build quality. This BMW B48 engine can easily see 300hp.

Got a quadlock case for my phone and mount for my trooper from when they first joined up with quadlock. Just screwed the main mount into the door and then added the motor cycle mount to absorb the bumps and vibrations for driving off road. Very very good purchase

Interesting philosophy, modern Mini isn't a Mini because it's BMW built? Meanwhile a JDM made and Honda swapped Mini is some how more Mini then the modern ones?
@DiscoFang3 ай бұрын
I think it's about the size. Yet Corolla is still Corolla, Civic is still Civic, Golf is still Golf. Fiat 500 is still Fiat 500, Range Rover is still Range Rover. It's astonishing how btthurt people get about a badge. Particularly, and especially the British.

I hate to break it to you guys but that isn’t a John Cooper Works. It’s a Cooper S 189bhp sport pack with a GPF and unresponsive 7 speed dual clutch (emissions). The pre-lci had a 6 speed auto, much better feeling and durable, also sounds much better (no GPF). Manual is better still. Great video.

The clutch in the earlier BMW minis will take the flywheel with it when it goes out. My local transmission shop said that Valeo spoke out against their own design for BMW and actually made a single mass conversion and it makes such a brilliant difference. For anyone with a manual BMW mini that might be getting close to needing a clutch replacement. Not sure how it'd work on yours Marty but I'm sure theirs a good workaround for the newer models

Great video guys! But i want to mention smth as an owner of F56 JCW. To make it run faster, shift faster, turns faster - at first you should use manual mode for the gearbox, turn on sport traction control mode, and be more active with the brakes before turns because obviously it has a lot of weight in the nose and you should treat it as fwd turbo car- therefore more twist it into the corners. It won’t be ideal of course - but experience could be much better and you’ll get the point of this car more deeply. Ah and of course time will be better😀

Hey guys, I have a stage 3 modified Volvo V40 R-design which was tuned by an amazing master tuner called Chris from DervTech Tuning here in the UK (in Ellesmere Port) he has developed by himself, some incredible tunes for these minis and gearbox tunes, people come from far and wide to get his expertise! Hoping that you speak to him to get some insight on what can be done! Let him know it’s Chris with the annoying to tune white Volvo v40, he’ll know what you mean! Thanks for all the content over the years, amazing to see how far you’ve come since the days of modifying the first red turd! 😁

The Classic Mini is my favorite, but I myself own a modified R58 Coupé JCW. When Moog said what classic owners thought about the modern ones I was looking forward to looking the other way, what modern owners think about the classics, because most of us (who are also car enthusiasts) adore the classic way more. I'd never swap in my Coupé, not even for the perfect classic. There are too many memories attached to this car. But I sure wish she had a classic sibling.
