I understand the sentiment of the term. However, l saw professional Black women dress this way in the 60’s and 70’s . My mother and all her college educated friends were adorned this way. I will say that I saw many then just like now who like to be flashy and ultimately look cheap . Many Black women choose a sexy look at all times and there is a time and place for everything. Great topic!

I am not a black woman but I agree that everyone should be themselves and wear something just because a certain group or person does. My favorite boss and also a friend was when I was in my early 20's. She was an older black lady and she made all her own clothes. Every Sunday she would come to work after church dressed beautiful including a matching hat. I will never forget her.

When I hear terms like, old money, clean, neutral, we already know those dog whistles. However, when you look at fashion houses that are thriving, they realized if they incorporated different cultural aesthetics( tends to be street fashion) they were able to elevate their line and stay afloat. Ralph Lauren is called the "classic American designer", but we all know him best for his designs that were inspired by Native Americans ( Navajo) and the Southwest color palette. IMHO, personal style is empowering and builds confidence whatever you choose to wear.

As women of a certain age who has loved fashion my whole life, I can unequivocally tell you this; the old money fashion doesn’t work for Black women because we are Black women. It doesn’t matter what we wear we will always be seen by the color of our skin. Ask Shelia Johnson, Michelle Obama or Stacy Abrams. We all know high power Black women who are treated like McDonald’s employees. We need to appreciate the fact that because we are Black women, we have the freedom to create our own fashion aesthetic and handle our own business unapologetically. Fashion doesn’t really apply to us because historically Black women don’t follow fashion trends, we create fashion trends.

Interesting take, but did you consider that back then it was not called old money fashion, it was just fashion. It was fashion everybody wore. There was a time when all women youngold, poor or weakthy did nit leave the house withiut a pair of white gloves, their best dress, a hat, no matter what it looked like. Many looks were tailored looking because ready made clothing sold in local stores hit its stride in the 40s and 50s. Most women were ordering patterns for dresses out of magazines and hand sewing or using sewing machines. The old money set were just older people with money (who knew how to keep it) and they didn't rush out to buy the latest trends. They wore the same good quality pieces over and over and learned how to accessorize. I appreciate you bringing up the topic of conversation 😊

Hi, if I’m being honest I’m not sure what the style was called back then but for me it’s more so about the meaning behind the term now. I think the style is great and I agree with having quality pieces that you can accessorize! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts.

Great video, I totally agree. There’s a lot of things I don’t like about certain fashion trends/aesthetic in the fashion industry. But I do believe like you mentioned that the purpose of fashion should be to have fun and be confident in your own look. I do lean towards more modern day classy clothes and I think it’s so important to be educated before you just assume or associate yourself with anything because the history is so important and there is a lot of anti blackness in certain aspects of certain fashion trends like when the “clean” girl look became a thing. We just have to be aware of what we’re choosing to give our attention to and I believe people will be able to still enjoy whatever style but also be very informed while doing so.

I appreciate the idea behind this video, but I don't think there is anything Not for Black women. We shouldn't limit ourselves because we are Black. At least, that is the goal, right? Boycotting the term will not do anything but stress us out about politics when we are just trying to look cute.

I don't understand this video.. I've been raised on both sides of the track..and I am black...With that being said, plenty of the women in my family are black professionals..They have always dressed with class, throughout the decades in every scrapbook I could find in the basement. that wasn't damaged by a natural disaster over the years. 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's...and today. Same thing throughout history. There have always been black people that have been elite , middle class and poor...Hell, there was even black people on the titanic. So, I'm not buying into the elite aesthetic is only for "white people"...People dress according to the environment that they were raised in...Just take a dip into Baltimore, Boston, Louisiana, NY, Conneticut, Charleston, Sc. San diego, california, Atlanta, certain parts of Miami. And you'll see...I'm sorry but as a black woman, I don't feel that we need to be competing with anything!. We set the trends, and the fashion changes within the decade!. Like marilyn monroe, got her signature "do" from a black woman...And Jackie kennedy's wedding dress was made by a black woman !. So, the whole talk about elitism aesthetic isn't for the black woman???. Is bullshit, because we've always been here !...To push the envelope even further, while I do understand everyone isn't blessed with a set of parents or guardians. To teach them right from wrong. But, the moment you become a woman, "you" should always have pride within yourself!. And carry yourself with class. It's a time and place for everything !.

Great video and interesting topic, I honestly believe a lot of these fashions and trends are not for blacks in general. The fashion houses have just recently started making clothes that can fit “ curvy” women. The wonderful thing about fashion is you can wear and enjoy what you want. The truth is we as black ppl always have our style and culture stolen that goes for fashion hair food and everything in between. 💕💕💕

I highly disagree. Fashion isn’t a “one size fits all,” thing. I view it in the same way that some women try to make every style fit themselves, but, it just doesn’t work for their body types. For example…. Knee high and thigh high boots. On women with slender legs, it doesn’t come close to the appeal of a woman that’s thick enough to fill them up.

Old money fashion means elegant not what your economical status is or what race you are . Someone really need to teach our young black how to dress in less seductive clothing especially in a professional setting. So many young black women dress like they are auditioning for a rap video.
@MariahMonea_Ай бұрын
Hello, in the video I too state that this style is elegant however two things can be true at the same time. I don’t think it’s fair to say someone needs to teach our young black women how to dress any certain way because at the end of the day everyone should wear what they want.
@prettymunetsiАй бұрын
Interesting topic. However, i disagree. "Old money" aesthetic is for anyone who wants to look timeless and effortless without following any passing trends. Saves money and is minimalistic. Its also for those who want to look elegant not sexy as black fashion tends to be too exposing especially for black women and this narrative of a black woman who is "sexy" is pushed a lot in social media platforms. So yes lets teach our children be it anh colour to dress properly. Its time for a black woman to refuse to be a sexual object.

I think one of the biggest indicators of style and fashion is how you choose to wear your hair. I think if your whole goal is to be recognized by Caucasian people, start from the top down. Be as natural as possible. I don’t think you can fit into a group that “you” are trying to imitate…. Now let me go watch this video 😂
