Awesome vintage lift! Here in Indonesia it's extremely RARE to find 60s or 70s OTIS lifts but fortunately there are around three still surviving but sadly one has been left abandoned. One of my friends managed to film one high-rise vintage OTIS complete original from 1976!

When I was a kid I used to visit Leeds University (where my father worked) and they had this kind of Otis lift. It was very common for the rubber cups to move out of place causing the lamp to faintly shine through the adjacent number as well - not to mention the bulb for a certain floor failing! In later years the lift developed a fault - it would ALWAYS stop at floor 3 on the way up or down, regardless of whether you selected it or not!

In the US, almost all old Otis elevators have the red/green filters for the arrows. Don't know how most are over there, but in the video you said it was strange. Here it's not.

Out of curiosity, is it youtubes "automatically stabilize video" option thing that makes the corners and sides go wild in this video or is it some other reason? That bothered me so much, but I assume it would've been very shaky and not great if it wasn't like that?
@mrmattandmrchay6 жыл бұрын
Hiya, nope, that's my previous editing software making a mess of stabilising my wide angle camera! This was actually a dash-cam I was using here and didn't have any built-in stablisation! I don't like the youtube stabilisation - it makes the video "sway" too much and also I cannot apply my watermark logo in the corner, as that would keep moving. For all my latest videos, I use Adobe Premiere which does a much better job :)

Never thought that these indicator panels use resin in the digits and arrows. That's quite interresting. I must say, as an structural engineer I quite like design of that building.
@mrmattandmrchay8 жыл бұрын
+dykodesigns2yt Hi, I have a few old Otis panels now, and they are all the same. You can imagine exactly how they drilled out the digits in the sheet metal, put the resin (if that's what it is?) through the holes, then probably filed and polished the "good" side so that on the front the resin sits flush into the digits. I'm going to do another video of these in my GLOW OR BLOW game show which is going to take forever to edit lol
@peterlomas9848 жыл бұрын
+mrmattandmrchay Nothing as complicated as that Matt, the inserts coloured or just off white were a bog standard Otis part which you ordered from the local branch office. They were mainly RED for down arrows or GREEN for up arrows. You just removed the old or broken insert the replaced it with a new one using a bit of glue. They usually needed a small amount of filing to get them to fit.

+Knuckles the Echidna I used to know the location of loads of H+C lifts. The H+C/Dover comparison I think are the same lift with same fittings. Benobve has a few on his channel (e.g. "the windsor H+C") but now there is only one location I can think of which is one of my videos - however it's not the "classic H+C" that I know more of a generic mod in a block of flats (see my "defeated by the gerda lock" video). I havem't seen a classic H+C for many years now.

+alloria Sometimes I have to film discretely which is much easier with my Innovv C2 and it's hardly noticeable. I did have my usual camera with me, but there are times where you can and cannot use it. The C2 you can stand next to someone and they won't notice. My Sony on the other hand is obvious!! Not sure they would like me filming here which is why I was very careful. I do like the wide angle of the C2, but it has no stablisation which means that Adobe After Effects does the best it can to stab it.

where my father works his office has a lift and when ever your going from a higher floor to the ground floor it makes a squeak noise or a grinding noise its really wierd
@mrmattandmrchay8 жыл бұрын
Sounds good to me :) At the top and bottom of the shaft are roller switches. As the lift gets to the top or bottom, the lift car pushes these switches in. There are rollers on these switches which sometimes make these squeaky noises.Would be interesting to know if it happens anywhere else, or just the top and bottom - this would confirm my theory! :)
@dylanreischling41518 жыл бұрын
next time i will press floor 3 the top floor and then go to the ground floor and see if it makes noises. sometimes it does it and sometimes it does not some times its really quiet and sometimes its loud. you never know what its going to do. I am in Brisbane, Australia. Old lifts are hard to find but there are still a few gems out there. Mostly its (ugh) Dewhurst though (unless its something new like Kone KDS on a Kone Ecodisc or something). The Otis Lexan I know of has been modernized (call stations replaced with Dewhurst and an additional Dewhurst car station added). The Dover Oildraulic I found a while back is close to original (had a large car station, a smaller car station and call stations all of which were Dover Impulse. Larger car station and call stations are still Dover Impulse but the smaller car station has again been replaced with Dewhurst). What is it with transit operators and Dewhurst anyway? (I know of an Otis Gen2 that originally had Otis buttons but got replaced with Dewhurst)

This was a lift within a building on a slope. So some areas of the building are lower than others. In this 'top' building, the 3rd floor lines up with the building next to it. Unless you were to go underground, the Gnd floor will not line up with the next building

I can answer the red and green filter arrows question. In the United States a very old elevator convention held that GREEN indicated UP and RED indicated down. Green things like plants grow UP and well HELL's fire was DOWN! That is how you can often detect an old elevator system in the USA. If you see the GREEN = UP and RED = DOWN arrow indicator convention used in an elevator it was designed pre-1970's from the 1960's or earlier. Today the convention in the USA seems to be RED still = DOWN and White = UP. Some federal buildings have new elevators that still use the old GREEN = UP \ RED = DOWN indicator convention. KONE elevators still like the green up red down. Green=Up \ Red=Down was big soon after the first automatic elevators came online. Lots of that has gone away with the digital revolution. There really is no conventions to speak of now.
