I'm in my 30s and growing up right at the start of social media (hello MySpace and the like) but as time passes, the more I am turned off by social media. I find it overstimulating and downright boring. I still stay on KZbin as sometimes I take content as podcast/talk radio that get me through my shift.

So many excellent points! I’ve always known that social media was dominated by youth but you’ve made me think about it in a much deeper way. We need representation for everyone at every age from every culture and i think our separation from older generations is doing us a disservice!

Excellent subject and exposition. A lot to ponder here!

you get called ancient for being 20+ nowadays online and I feel like it gets younger as time goes on

Maybe it's because younger people are less hesitant to voice their short term opinion.

Not exactly a hot take. He's a creep, and his videos are made to rot 12-y/o brains.

I love the way you approach the topics...logical criticism without dissing people. That's how the internet should have been lol. Great vid.

Every time I check out a video from someone new and don't hear the "Influencer Accent" in their voice, I give a sigh of relief. It may be good for overall engagement but man, I feel drained hearing that stuff for more than a few minutes. I love hearing a genuine voice in videos that are just people talking about something. Sensationalism is exhausting!

There is a cultural hegemony on social media as well. The American one. Perpetuated even by those who are not American!

KZbin has been better at recommending me smaller channels. For me, they give me a feel for what KZbin was created for - sharing moments and insights from your life. Nice little video this. I went ahead and graduated with a (useless xd) degree in philosophy so it's cool to see other girls interested in the subject, too!

It’s like, I’m in my early 30s and I feel like I’ve already left a large chunk of the culture behind - it’s so built up for teens and 20s, it feels like you lose something, when your not interested in going out anymore. But perhaps, I’d go out more if there were more ‘social clubs’ for people my age. So much of it is just bar culture, which I got my fill of. Capitalism has wiped out so many of these public places that are grandparents or great grandparents used to have.

I'm 24 and feel the same way, culture is geared towards excess and mindless consumption that deters much meaningful or genuine social connection

Excellent discussion. 35 and I use no social media beyond youtube these days. Most corners of the interet have devolved into slop or scams it seems. Play music... Read... Touch grass.... Love.

Hey Celine: Loved the video, but I'm a boomer and I'll take your dismissal of our generation (not saying you're right or wrong) as a challenge!

But social media is not a monolith. There are different "ghettos" (KZbin, Facebook, Twitter/X, TikTok, Reddit, Discord... etc). Each generation naturally falls into one of them. With every new generation, new media appear, and young people mostly get into something new.

Excellent analysis. We need to give it some time. Look at PewDiePie, started as a teen with gameplay videos and now he's a (wholesome) travel and family vloger. And in the future he will be something else.

Really appreciate this video!! I think it's super relevant to korea and vietnam veterans in the U.S. struggling to reintegrate into society, if you're interested, you should read "The War Has Taken Place" by Merleau - Ponty, if you can ever find it!
