Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Alloa a town in Clackmannanshire. It is located on the north bank of the Forth at the spot where some say it ceases to be the River Forth and becomes the Firth of Forth. In 1813 the first steamboat started to operate out of Alloa harbour.After the improvements were made to the harbour during the 18th century, Alloa thrived as a river port through which the products of Glasgow manufacture were exported to continental Europe. The town was known for its weaving and glassmaking industries well into the 19th and early 20th centuries. Alloa was long associated with the brewing industry, with at least nine major breweries producing ales at its height. George Brown was born in Alloa on November 29, 1818, he was a Scottish born Canadian journalist, politician and one of the Fathers of Confederation. A noted Reform politician, he is best known as the founder and editor of the Toronto Globe. Ferguson and Sharkey are the main surnames in my family who have a very strong link with Alloa - i know at one point there were lots of Fergusons in Alloa mostly connected in some way going back because most people had very large families back then - I think most of the Sharkey side eventually had moved out mostly to Edinburgh by the time of WW2

I wonder who the two women and baby were in that picture - if they were from Alloa there is a good chance they might be related to me even in a very very distant way - my relatives go way way back in Alloa till the time not many people lived there going on till nearly everyone could trace a connection with someone else in some way or another
