Old photographs of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. The Industrial Revolution based on the textile industry turned Paisley from a small market town to an important industrial town in the late 18th century. Its location attracted English mill owners; immigrants from Ayrshire and the Highlands poured in to a town that offered paying jobs to women and children. By the middle of the19th century weaving had become the town's principal industry. The Paisley weavers' most famous product were the shawls, which bore the Paisley Pattern made fashionable after being worn by a young Queen Victoria. The American Civil War of 1861 to 1865 cut off cotton supplies to the textile mills of Paisley. The mills in 1861 had a stock of cotton in reserve, but by 1862 there was large scale shortages and closures

Nice to see this, my Great Great Paternal Grandfather came to Philadelphia from Paisley. He learned his trade there. He was a tailor and he left Paisley in 1859. His name was John Bell.

Wonderful photographs!! It would be wonderful to have dates for them. My 2nd and 3rd great grandparents worked the mills in the Johnstone mills down the street. My 2nd great grandmother Anna, was left an orphan at age 2 when the cholera epidemic came through the area in 1832. We know nothing else about the McCormick/Cummings line. Anna was sent to live with an aunt who also died from cholera. She was put into a workhouse near the factory in Johnstone for several years, picking up the things that fell behind the looms and such, and eventually taken home by one of the workers, John Leishman, and raised in his home. I would certainly like to know more about Anna's parents! We think they are buried in the mass grave in Paisley. Looking at these pictures makes me wonder if any of these fine looking people are her people!

I was born in Paisley January 1959 apparently the 4th last born at the hospital before it was decommissioned , i would love to know the name of the hospital if anyone has any ideas that would be much appreciated, sadly both parents have passed so i'm only going on what i remember when i was a child in Scotland, My father worked at Roots car factory and i absolutely loved their Christmas functions, my god it was brilliant back then as a kid :)

That would've been the Barshaw hospital, probably. My dad was a cycle checker foreman(as a wee yin I thought he checked bikes but it was just a fancy term for stock taker foreman) at Rootes (spelt with an e) and I remember those Christmas parties. Great fun.

Renfrewshire Council has taken Paisley from the Victorian era and dragged it back into the dark ages! 😂 A huge of taxpayers money has been spent to systematically deatroy this once thriving town. I'm sure the council could've destroyed Paisley a lot cheaper than the multiple millions that have been spent. Now if we want to see the streets and shops crowded with customers we have to look at photos from 100 years ago! 😂
