I believe one important point that might be overlooked is that Buffalo Trace essentially has two mash bills. The mash bill used in all Van Winkle products is identical to the one used in all Weller products. The key difference lies in the fact that the Van Winkle family selects the barrels they want to use from their Rickhouse after the bourbons have aged for a certain period. In essence, with any Van Winkle product, you're getting the best barrel picks from all that Weller has to offer. So, when you go to a liquor store and see a Weller barrel pick-like a Weller Full Proof barrel pick-keep in mind that those barrels are what remains after the Van Winkle family has already selected the finest barrels. While some of the popularity surrounding Van Winkle may be market hype, it's also true that these products represent the best available from Weller. I hope that makes sense.

@@Smokeandoak23 definitely makes sense. With BT products there is so many rumors that fly around on groups. But what you wrote does make sense.

To each is there own. I enjoy the hunt for bottles at msrp. Been at it for yrs, about 800+ bottles. I’ll drink when I’m feeling up to it. But as a single man over 50 yrs old, it’s enjoyable. Insured, and something I can leave my nephews. An itemized list as to appraisal value vs msrp. At least they’ll have something for reference.

@@FNFBARTALK I’m sure it’ll crash like the late 70’s/til mid 80’s… but it’s a roller coaster. Shelves will be filled and it won’t be the “cool /hip “ thing to do. Then in a decade, it’ll be like 2020. Imo. 🤷🏼 Keep up the great content guys !!! Happy holidays!

@ I agree. It’s definitely trendy right now. And Yellowstone swapping over to BT & Weller just fueled the fire more. Thanks for the support, Happy Holidays.

Totally agree that paying these hugh prices is insane. So I only pay msrp or slightly higher like no more than 20 bucks over, if I really want a particular bottle, but I have a bottle of old rip van winkle 10 yr. Paul $100. It's one of my best.

BEST REVIEW I have ever saw...🤣 100% me. I get nothing on flavors, I'm like it reminds me of the time my Grandpa tricked me into syphoning gasoline. It burns and its Bourbon that is all I fucking know...

@@LAA1979 some people have the 1% palette. I do not lol. But it’s okay cause everyone drinks different and it’s part of the game. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your feedback.

When it comes to tasting and nosing whiskey, the goal is to describe what hits you-the various aromas and flavors that emerge. Of course, you'll always notice the alcohol since it's whiskey, but what else do you smell? What does it remind you of? If you were to describe the scent to someone who has never experienced it before, what would you highlight? Your nose can detect about a trillion different smells, so there’s something in that glass that will remind you of a scent you’ve encountered before. That’s what you’re trying to articulate. With all bourbons, there are common aromas like vanilla, oak, and possibly some smoky tobacco or leather. However, not everyone will identify all these smells, and they may not be present in every whiskey. As for the taste, consider what you experience when the whiskey first touches the tip of your tongue. Then, recognize what you taste as it reaches the middle of your tongue and what you perceive when it flows to the back of your mouth. Finally, reflect on the sensations left in your mouth after you swallow. All of these elements can be thought of as "emotions," which help you describe the characteristics of the whiskey you’ve sampled. When you’ve tasted many different whiskeys, you begin to develop a personal lexicon to describe them. Is this bourbon sweet? Is it more dusty, oaky, caramel-like, or vanilla-inflected? These are the kinds of descriptions you would share with someone who has never had the experience before.

@@Smokeandoak23 I appreciate you taking the time to respond and responding with such a lengthy response at that. Very informational as I’m not a bourbon connoisseur by any means and Rob is having a blast trying different bottles out. I’ve never been able to pull tons of flavors out. Maybe a few At best like you said oak, caramel, leather and tobacco from certain bottles and sometimes a sour dough bread flavor. Thanks for watching and sharing feedback.

For me..trying to distinguish those flavors or “notes“ would be great, but when they’re masked with an overpowering alcohol, I don’t really want to savor in my mouth trying to figure out flavors. When I drink a Long Island iced tea, I can tell if they were more heavier on the gin or the vodka or if they were lacking on the simple syrup, etc. mainly that’s due to the overall drink, not being so harsh that I wanna get it down before I can analyze it. But I know that comes with over the years of me just basically taking shots of straight liquor not really tasting it just why I prefer a mixed drinks. That’s how I distinguish flavors. But who knows maybe in the years to come I can learn.

I could buy Old Rip for $25 a bottle it was in a squatter looking bottle. Old Rip is hot and will give you a monster headache. You would have to be crazy to pay that much because its not all that great and never has been. You guys seem to be into believing the hype about bourbon. I used to haul for all the distilleries in Ky back in the 80s hauling the "recently barreled ' bourbon to the aging warehouses. We called it white dog and yep we drank it as it dripped out of the filler faucets. You would be surprised how many distilleries would sell over stock or bad batches to other distilleries to cut their low end bourbon with. Ancient Age and Old Fitzgerald were basically blended with bad batches from other distilleries. I hauled the stuff so I do know a bit about how they work.
