Since Pappy is produced by the Buffalo Trace Distillery, we thought it only fitting to go on a road trip. So B, Jeff, and I rented a Suburban a headed for our Frankfort for a guided tour to learn about the history of Pappy straight from the source.
The legend of Pappy goes all the way back to 1893 and Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr. At the age of 18 Pappy would work as a salesman for the W.L Weller & Sons, learning the business, and would later become a co-owner.
The second generation, “Pappy’s” son, was Julian Van Winkle Jr. And after returning from the war with a purple heart, he continued his fathers legacy even after being forced to sell the family distillery by resurrecting the van winkle brand.
Today it’s hard to imagine the time when bourbon was out of favor, but that’s just how it was in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Maybe it was luck, maybe it was fortuitous timing, but things turned around for the Van Winkle brand when Julian III, Pappy’s grandson, released the worlds first 20 year old bourbon in 1994.
Soon thereafter, in 1996 everything changed after Pappy 20 was submitted to the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago where it was awarded a 99/100- the highest rating the Beverage Institute had ever given a whiskey. And that’s how the Pappy craze got its start.
