This is the most beautiful rendition of the Kyrie eleison I have ever heard. I am a Catholic, but have been drawn by prayer to use the traditionally Orthodox practices of the prayer rope into my prayer life. Mymy research area is early Christian communities in upper Egypt and Syria, and the traces of whaat we'd now call Eastern Orthodox tradition which are embedded in some early Irish liturgies and martyrologies. Our schism is so sad, and our protective tenacity perhaps misplaced that we have for so long resisted any moves towards reconciliation. In this setting, there is an echo of the faith which unites us beyond differences. For our schism, Kyrie, eleison: Ἅγιος ὁ Θεός, Ἅγιος ἰσχυρός, Ἅγιος ἀθάνατος, ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς.

I wish people would do their research before commenting. It's a mere Google search. "Kyrie eleison" is Greek for "Lord, have mercy". Kyrie (κυριε)- masculine vocative singular noun, meaning "Lord". Eleison/eleēson (ελεησον)- 2nd person singular, aorist active imperative, from the verb "ελεαω" (eleao), meaning "I pity". The Latin equivalent would be "Domine, miserere." In Rome, the sacred Liturgy was first celebrated in Greek. As Christianity gained popularity, the Roman Mass was translated into Latin, but the familiar and venerated Greek prayer was preserved, much alike Hebrew phrases such as "Alleluia" and "Hosanna". Also, if I remember correctly, the Romans who lived in Constantinople would call themselves "Romanoi" (a pun of sorts, since "Romani" is Latin for "Romans" and the "-oi" ending is the equivalent masculine nominative plural ending in Greek) to demonstrate their being Romans, yet Greeks at the same time.

+C koune Actually, after the Imperium Romanum was split in two, the people of the east part of it (Byzantion with Konstantinopolis as capital) saw themselves as "true Romans". That's why they called themselves Rhomaioi (Ῥωμαῖοι), which - of course - stands for "Romans" in Greek. They thought Constantinople to be the second and true Rome. That is also why the Byzantine-Oriental Church never acknowledged the pope to be their superior, because for them Rome was Constantinople and the old city in Italy had no meaning to them anymore other than being an old form of Rome. In literature, this is called "translatio imperii". Later, the Germanic kingdoms were considered the new, true Rome (against Constantinople). So Otto II was crowned "Emperor of Rome" (and "King of the Teutonics"). Btw, I doubt that this chant is Roman. As far as I know, first under the reign of the Carolingians, the "Gregorian Chant" was invented and came from Teutonia to Rome in the early middle ages. In the east, a liturgic chant is much older. I think, this is actually a chant sung in one of the four eastern patriarchates. I also think, that "eléison" does not mean "I pity" but "have mercy" (Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy). This phrase, however, was never translated into Latin, although equivalents can be found in the Roman rite like "miserere nobis".

+Randolph Crane Gregorian IS authentic Roman chant, not a German invention. There's been ongoing 21st-century research demonstrating this. The Church of Rome's chant system spread throughout Europe in the Carolingian time and became committed to text as early as the 800s. Meanwhile the Church of Rome's chant continued to evolve as an oral tradition until the High Middle Ages when it was written down, and later replaced by its cousin Gregorian for the sake of uniformity. That last bit is the truth to your suggestion that Roman chant came from the Teutonics. What you hear in this video is indeed 'Old Roman', i.e. the chant from the city of Rome as recorded on paper in the 1000s to 1200s. Despite the usual cross-influence common in the first millennium, especially Byzantine presence in 7th-century Italy, this music is hardly Byzantine in substance if you actually study it. The reason it sounds so eastern is Ensemble Organum reinterpreted it to sound eastern because apparently they think eastern chant sounds better than Gregorian.

Anyhow it's actually fairly important to remember that Greek was the liturgical language of the Church of Rome in the first few centuries ... a time when the Bible itself (thus all liturgical readings and the liturgical texts which are often mosaics of Holy Scripture) had not yet been translated by St Jerome. This of course counters the "traditionalist" (quotes here to imply that this form of traditionalism is a 19th century Roman traditionalism, and incidentally not fully traditional) perspective that Latin is the supreme liturgical language -- one which the Roman Church ought to preserve for every liturgy.

When the traditionalists say that the Latin Mass must return they are not talking about the language the mass must be sung in, but about the form of the liturgy. You can sing a Novus Ordo mass in latin, and a Tridentine Mass in vernacular. The real difference isn't in the language but in the general liturgy of the mass. Calling the Tridentine Mass "latin" is just an intellectual shortcut to drive the point home quicker when discussing about the liturgy, owing to the fact that most traditional masses are sung in latin, and most modern masses sung in vernacular. By the way, the Lord, Apostles and disciples spoke in aramaic.

Ironically, many of these sorts of chants are more biblically accurate than our hymns (especially the ones that are the literal Psalms word for word in chant lol). If I am not misunderstanding, the style of worship is meant to illicit some sense of mysticism with its otherworldly style whilst exalting and proclaiming the Holy Triune God. Check out the hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" by Martin Luther, yes that one, and pay attention to the style in which its sung - sounds loosely familiar to chant. I noticed this because that is easily one of my favorites and the glowing irony with the Catholic/Orthodox sounding chorus in the most famous Protestant Reformer's work. Jokes aside, it shows how beneficial chant can be when used to glorify God and spread His Holy Gospel as mandated by Our Lord in His Great Commission. Veritas Est Christi

As you can tell this is a hugely powerful hymn. Like so many languages It, cant be translated directly into English. It's Latin and can however be loosely translated into New Zealand English as: 1. De Deo lumine, salus vita, via, veritas idemique - The light of God, the safety of life, the way, the truth, savior, 3. Consolator pia, flamine quoque alme vivifice - (Oh) The Counselor of the loving, favoring the life-giving (energies in creation), by the blowing (flowing) of nourishing life giving (power), 4.De nihilo iussu verbo qui cuncta creasti - (Lord) Who created all things out of nothing, by the order of the word, 5. Tu preces populi, batismatised te directos - By the prayers of the people we will be baptized (immediately / instantly), 6.Te corda precanda humili ut pariter cum Patre - We must pray with humble hearts together with the Father (to the Father), 7.Omnes pariter altissimi vocibus te laudamus - (Come) All manner of voices (All creatures on earth) to praise (him), 8. What a beautiful hymn. My thanks again to Callixtinus for making it possible to listen to such wonderful music. Even the name Callixtinus invokes in me the Late Roman Empire, or as the historians prefer, Late Antiquity (250 ad to 750 ad). A tenuous period when both the Western Roman Empire and the Persian Empire vanished forever. In Western Europe the Dark Ages set in. Because Christianity spread from its base in the eastern littoral of the Mediterranean through the Roman provinces of Anatolia and then into Greece, the origins of the mass can be traced back to these areas. Originally the mass must have almost certainly been chanted. And the two most prominent languages used for this would have been Aramaic and Koiné Greek. Both of these languages of course are still prominently used even today. Aramaic in the Christian communities of the Middle East and the Lebanon and Greek of course in Greece. Christianity began spreading throughout the Western Roman Empire as early as the 1st century ad. It took three centuries for it to become the state religion of the Empire. In its capital, Rome, the mass of course would have been celebrated in Latin. And anyone who has studied Church Latin knows, its vocabulary and grammar are very close to Classical Latin. The Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy on us) is the only remaining remnant of a Greek chant used in the celebration of the Latin mass.

The Early Catholic Church adapted a lot of their music practices on preexisting practices of the jewish readings of the Torah (especially the Psalms). Obviously as time went on, and chant became more generalized vs. localized, some of these practices changed. This a great example of a melding of Roman chant with a local performance practice. @Callixtinus Old Roman Chant also was adapted from Early Byzantine Chant. It kind of shows how the Eastern and Western parts of the Church remained intimately tied together. I believe the tradition goes that St. Gregory had made a trip to the East and was inspired by the chant, and decided to adopt it for the West. Of course, from our perspective, the Roman Church was Orthodox before the schism, and so it makes sense (to us) that pre-Schism they were very much like the Eastern Churches.

The RHYTHM of this recording by Ensemble Organum is VERY close to an accurate reading of the neumes of "Kyrie Eleison Incarnatum Quoque", found on folio 116r and 116v in the Bodmer 74 Codex on the e-codices website. As someone fluent in the medieval musical notations, I believe the way the song sounds in this video is QUITE possibly close to the way it actually sounded in the 1060s. (I can't say the same for the rest of this album.)

True and very first Roman traditions were kept only in Eastern Roman empire , just like Christianity... just like this ancient Roman chant before schism is identical to modern Byzantine chant of Kyrie eleison... "Orthodox" word from ancient Greek translates as unchangable, it means when you follow something from the very beggining without changing it, following it traditionally. so when you call someone orthodox christian you are actually calling them unchanged christians, yes I am unchanged christian before schism christian, which is Christian Orthodox, the eastern Orthodox or Orthodox Catholic church.

Latin was used for the liturgy by the Roman Church as early as 186 AD under Pope Victor I so it's part of our Tradition as Roman Catholics to use Latin in our Liturgy. We have kept the Kyrie Eleison in Greek as a tribute and recognition of the importance of the Greek language at that time. There were also other liturgical languages around at the time: Armenian, Coptic, and even Syriac/Aramaic, the language of Christ. All churches that aren't protestant also claim Orthodoxy: the Catholic Church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Syriac Church, the Coptic Church, etc... and they are not always called Orthodox but that's just usage. Usage in and of itself doesn't invalidate nor strengthen a claim to Orthodoxy, nor does the use of a different liturgical language.

The Greek was retained for the Kyrie so the Mass would have 3 languages in it: Latin, Greek, and Hebrew (e.g. Hosanna, Alleluia). That's so the Mass would have the 3 languages in it that were written atop the Cross at Calvary.

City of Rome had its own way of chanting reaching back to the New Testament, as far as anyone can really tell. The earliest written records of it are not till the 800s (Gregorian) and the 1000s (Old Roman). Reconstructing history, we believe today that Rome's chant was adopted and widespread across Europe by the Carolingian dynasty in the late 700s. It was standardized in the 800s when it was written down. Meanwhile the City of Rome did not write it down, but instead kept singing it from memory. Human memory shifts a bit, and so the civil Roman chant and the continental Roman chant evolved into slightly different dialects. Or at least that's the current theory. The Gregorian chant is the continental form. The Old Roman chant is the civil form. Old Roman is called such because it was the "older" form of Rome's music before Gregorian chant replaced it at the end of the High Middle Ages. Actually, Gregorian is believed to be older in its musical form because when it was written down it became frozen in time while Old Roman continued to evolve. The proper way to see them, if the theory is true, is two sister dialects of the same Roman chant. The sound of both chants, however, is drastically different. Some say this is because Gregorian chant, on one hand, lost its ornate character at the hands of the incompetent French, Germans, and other continental nations, while the Old Roman chant, on the other, kept alive a nebulous cultural connection to Eastern Orthodoxy. Consequently, every recording you hear of Old Roman sounds like Orthodox Greek chant, and every recording you hear of Gregorian sounds the opposite. In reality, they were both probably much closer to each other than they are in these recordings, and these recordings are far from accurate. But that's another topic.
