OLD SCHOOL FRIED OKRA

This a very simple stable recipe and meal of the south
i love to eat mine with fried chicken and ketchup
RECIPE:
1lb fresh okra
1 well beaten egg
1 cup yellow cornmeal
1/2 cup ap flour
1-1/3 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/3 tsp onion powder
1 cup buttermilk
mix all dry ingredients together and place in bowl or bag
mix egg and buttermilk and pour over okra
drain okra and completely dust with dry mixture
fry in vegetable oil until golden brown

My favorite vegetable,love Okra if it is done correctly,I personally like how my mom used to do and fry it in the skillet,I don't like the way restaurants do it by deep frying them these days!! Wow. Fried okra is one of my favorite foods. If it's good, I can't stop eating it. The frozen stuff in a bag is usually terrible. But made at home or at a good restaurant, it's awesome. You make it look easy. I usually make a huge mess when I do it. Shaking everything in a bag is a great idea.

The problem with frozen okra from the store is that it's always picked too big. It should be no larger around than a nickel, smaller is even better. If you can find Stilwell brand frozen okra, it's usually nice and small.

My Grandmother was from Memphis and when I was a kid she taught me how to cook southern food like cracklin cornbread, okra, collard greens, mustard and turnip greens too. The ones I remember and love the most are the okra and fried yellow squash in bacon. I make it all for my grandkids and they love everything so far. Can you do a video with fried green tomatoes and tell us if you grew them,or bought them and which type of tomato is best? Oh how I love your recipes! Unfortunately I was not that attentive or in the kitchen much when I was younger. My Mother was a great cook....the best. Like I said I've found some of your recipes and tried them out.....made me glad I found your YT channel. I'm a big okra fan; my Mom made it boiled, steamed and fried. I love okra all different ways, cooked in many different recipes. I'll try your recipe soon. But can you give me a quick instruction re. boiled *OR* steamed okra? Whichever one you're familiar with. Good morning Chef Jeffrey, I can remember as a child grabbing a handful of okra from the pile that we picked with our grandfather while sitting in the back of his truck and wiping each one with a rag to clean and take the fuzzy coating off then eating it raw. I can't believe I did that today, yuck! My Mom and grandmother use to cut it up and fry it like you would saute onions or something. Then we would eat it over rice. That is one of my favorite part of the meal when I went to Golden Corral, okra and rice. I never ate it fried that way until I moved up North. We had all kinds of fresh fruit and veggies like okra, pears, figs peaches, plums, tomatoes, strawberries, persimmons, pecans, and even grapes that grew on vines along fence lines when I was young. Now days everything just stop growing. Probably mainly due to all this fertilization. I can't eat everybody's okra, because some people don't seem to be able to cook it without it being slimmy. I didn't know it then, but those were the good old days. 👌🏽🤗
