Hey Guys! Welcome back to my channel. In today’s video I’m making Fresh Fried Okra. I’m growing Okra in my garden but it’s not producing as well as I’d like it to. I’ve started two new rows for Fall. I pray that they will produce much better. I have a handful from my garden and the rest comes from Bellows’s Produce over in Dayton.
It’s starting to look just a little beat up but believe me you will never know that by the time it hits your table.
As I say in this video, this is one vegetable that I like to keep my seasonings simple for. I only use salt and pepper plus some granulated garlic and that’s it. This way you will taste the Okra and not a bunch of other flavors.
As you see the family really loved it because they just wouldn’t stop eating on it while I was cooking. I have to say that I totally agree with them too. You can’t beat crispy Okra fresh out of the pan.
Now be sure that you don’t overcrowd your pan and make sure that the oil is hot enough but not too hot. If the oil is too hot it’ll burn the Okra and that will change the taste of it. If you overcrowd the pan your Okra will be mushy or on the soft side. If you want it good and crispy don’t crowd and get the oil good and hot.
Fresh Fried Okra:
1st Gather the amount of Okra that you want to cook. Wash it and make sure that you remove excess water before you cut it up. This will prevent it from being slimy when you are working with it.
For the whole amount of my Okra I used the following ingredients.
2 Teaspoons Black Pepper
2 Teaspoons Salt
2 Teaspoons Granulated Garlic
2 Tablespoons Self Rising Flour
1/2 Cup Cornmeal
Corn, Vegetable or Peanut Oil for frying.
Season the Okra first and mix it well. Toss it in the flour making sure that it’s coated. Next add the cornmeal and make sure that the Okra is completely coated. Pour the oil in a cast iron or frying pan to heat up. Once the oil is hot start adding your first batch of Okra to fry. No overcrowding please so cook in small batches.
Cook over medium high heat until it’s the color that you like. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Cook the rest of the batches and try to keep your family from eating it all up before the rest of the dinner is ready. If possible cook the Okra last that way it will survive, Lol! Enjoy!
