This is one of the best thumper videos and explanations of line arms and diameter explanation I have ever seen. So if I’m understanding this correctly if you were to want to use a tall column for higher proof and shoot thumper for flavor at the same time all you need to do is elevate your thumper so you don’t have the Long column leading to the thumper acting as a condenser ?
@PoppaLongroach

Like turlough Kennedy said l've been waiting for a video like this and yes it was very help full my arm coming off the cap is on a down slope to the thumper instead of straight 3 feet then down to the thumper like he was saying but my thumper pretty big to handle the extra distillation coming off the pot I'm run a 10 gallon with a 2 and 3/4 gallon thumper but I still got alot to learn about the mash can't get my corn mash to taste like corn keep tasting like whiskey and Tequila mix together I cook the corn cool it down to malt pitching temperature then the yest but using distillers yeast I think I might be using to much sugar cause my Mash hydrometer is reading 15 instead of the seven or eight

I never go above 1.050 on my starting gravity. With all the liquid in the thumper, it can never get hit enough to function, you passing really hot vapor straight through the distillate in the thumper without anything redistilling.

And that's why an old school alembic still has an onion shaped cap. Still get flavor but a higher proof. Some of the first moonshiners in the US were Irish and Scottish and they used alembic type pot stills

Good informative video and well presented ! I understand the "reflux effect" due to the heatloss in the top section + pipe to the thumper. The less surface in the top section, the less condensation, the better it is for your thumper function. I guess thermal insulating them would be even better. In the old days and hidden somewhere in the woods, it was not possible to exactly control the heat input into the mash. Heating was done by an open wood fire. In fact with a thumper you need some extra heat to carry-over hot water vapor to get the thumper going.

Now I'm rethinking some copper I bought to maximize copper in minimum space. I got a heat trap loop firstly because it looked cool. But it gives almost 3 feet of copper pipe in about 8 horizontal inches. I'll keep it around and connect it occasionally for a different kick whether it flavor or Alcohol. I'll eventually get this ship headed in the right direction😂

Great video, but I have to comment that it is bad form not to include a link to the "Still'in Old School" channel. I had to search that name on KZbin to find his other videos. Always share links of people whose videos you use or who you collaborate with. That's just how it's done.

What I want to know is what gauge do u use to make the still and how much u need for a pot like this cause that dam copper is expensive. And if u try to buy one this size you'll have to take out a second mortgage.
