Back when I was a kid in the 50’s and 60’s in upper East Tenn, ,when I’d go hiking with the Boy Scouts or just my friends , we’d find stills out in the woods . Sometimes we’d hear that thumper going and we’d turn around and go another way as they didn’t like it when people showed up when they were working. I had a friend whose Uncle made shine and now I wish I’d gotten him to show me how to do it . Good Video. Brings back memories

Hell yeah!!! I'm a admirer of the old school at 44 now and always have been. The greatest lessons I've learned were taught by older gentlemen.. You cut a v in the end of the pipe that's in the Trumper that let's the vapors escape into the liquid it heats up the liquid doubled distills it .I was thought this method 40 years ago by old-timers in the woods one setup that most ppl never seen is slobberbox .

Reminds me of great and great great granddads discussing whiskey making. Great great died in1959 age 100, greatgrandad died at 87. They used malted wheat and barley. Hard to find sheetcopper these days. Think I will have to build a still. Thanks for the memories. I do remember them talking of building a hidden tank on farm truck. Never got caught. They also made white lightening,sugar yeast water. They used charred oak strips to quick age the whiskey.

Absolutely, my recipe is half cracked corn half malted corn. You could have all peted, half malted or any combination you want to chase the exact flavor you want!

Question for ya. The money I spent on this 20bgal pot still I am not impressed with the thumpernsize. I'm guessing it is 2 gal or under. I have an old Keg I want to use as a thumper is it bad to use that size thumper with a 20 gal

A 2 gallon thumper is too small for a 20 gal still. A 5 gallon still would be the minimum size. 10 gallon would be the top end side. I think a 15 gallon keg might be larger than needed, but I would try it before I ruled it out.

The thoughts of methanol have been all wrong. It is produced the entire distillation process with the highest quantity being the tails. NOT the foreshot. Also not enough is produced to be harmful. Blindness and other issues came from people using lead and radiators in still making.
