I, too am an old line MoPar guy. My first car was an original flawless used 1971 Road Runner with a 383. After that, excepting a fully restored 1958 Plymouth Fury (a real one, which I still own) I drove Lincolns, BMWs, etc from the 90s to the present day. Mostly 1991-93-95 Lincoln Town Cars. Loved them as an everyday ride. I felt Chrysler had nothing to offer me. They were in the Minivan file. Then the 2005 300c came out and that changed everything. I was most impressed with the package, so I ordered one of the very first 06 300c SRT8s in black. Loaded with every option. I still have it. What I wasn't prepared for was how damn reliable the car has been. Outside of a battery, spark plugs, brakes, fluid, and a couple of tie rod end links, the car has been stone cold reliable. I was prepared for the opposite. And very, very fast. The 6.1 liter Hemi is incredible. I drive it and a 2015 GMC Sierra SLT. And that's a great pick up truck.

Good stuff 👍. What's even better is I LOVE 71 Roadrunners/ Satellites especially with a 72 grille swapped in. I actually like the 71 & 72's better than the 68, 69, and 70. I have also been collecting 58 Plymouth parts for the possibility of building a 1 off 1958 hardtop wagon. Bumper wings are a Must. I hope someone out there starts reproducing bumper wings.

My mom had a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it served her very well. I remember saying "If Chrysler built cars this well in the 80s, they wouldn't have been in so many mergers and sell-offs." It wasn't as good as the Honda CRV she has now, but she got a lot more car for her money when she bought the Jeep GC.

The fact that they made a 392 gen I hemi and a 392 gen III hemi leads to a lot of confusion. Kind of like a 5.0 Ford Windsor and a 5.0 Coyote. If you're searching for early 392 stuff you get mostly new 392 stuff in your search results.

Alright Uncle Tony!!! Gettin down with the Gen3s. That's what I know like the back of my hand. I work on them and tune on them at a premier Hemi performance shop, for a living. I'm slowly retro-learning the old stuff, the roots, that you're into. And your channel is TOP notch for that. The cylinder head that you have is from an 09+ year engine, and NO longer had the valve seat issues that the 03-08 had. So NO worries there. Lifter failure has been an off and on issue, which Chrysler just made a new revised lifter a couple years ago. People call it the Hellcat lifter upgrade, when in fact, it's the same lifter that now goes in anything Gen3. My 03 Ram with upgraded cam has 150k, and my 07 Charger Daytona R/T has 239k , neither have had lifter nor valve seat issues. Keep on Rockin with the videos, and learning process!

I'd notch the pinchweld back to clear, then weld the seam closed. We went with a different OEM, alternator with a smaller case, BUT, we had to make a custom extended Alt. pulley to align the belt properly. Aftermarket steering shaft is a must, and would recommend a power steering rack. We used RMS, they made K frame equipped with rack, and motor mounts. If you go that route, the Hellcat P/S pump needs to be sent out and revalved, other wise it creates too high line pressure and blows seals out of the rack after a short while.

Alpha, really happy you got a chance to finally put hands on a modern gen III hemi and were impressed by the design! Back in the day, mopars in general and hemis in particular were arch rivals to those of us in the 'gm' camp. I can't speak for the 5.7 but the 6.4 in my Challenger is, in my opinion, a thoroughly impressive engine. It moves that 4200 lb behemoth exceedingly well. Loads of smooth power and tq throughout the RPM range. I will be closely watching content related to this build, since once I get the Procharger bolted on, I completely expect to grenade a piston in the 392 necessitating a (gen III) forged 426 build. Then I can REALLY turn up the wick. Perhaps we can collaborate in the future if (let's face it WHEN) necessary... The reason why the valve seats drop on those because the seats are made put of powder metal and since aluminum expands under heat and powder metal don't so when you shit you car off a valve is left open then the seat drops then you start you engine then is destroys it. So the machine shop cuts all the seat put and puts regular harden seat so it doesn't happen again

Tony, the issue with valve seats is a materials issue, tends to happen after over heating. The newer 5.7L hemi, 09 or newer, has a different head with different valve seats and will fix it if you can find a set of junk yard heads. The other bonus on that as well if you are staying NA with this is that the quench zones are bigger on the eagle/09+ heads so you can bump the compression ratio significantly with a head swap.

The thing with the valve seats is that the head is aluminum and the seats are steel. Very common these days actually. These engines were a little more prone to dropping them when the aluminum expanded, and during enough heat cycles. My thermostat failed shut during a cold winter when I was warming my truck up. Came back wasn't running. Prognosis, overheated and dropped valve seats. The Achilles foot of this engine Got a new engine, and for some reason my thermostats kept failing. Probably because you can only get cheap garbage at part stores now. Solid engine. Just gotta keep an eye on the temperature gauge.

Most aluminum heads have a valve seat made of a different material, so that can't be the full explanation of why valve seats fall out of those engines. After all, when these engines were common, the majority of cars on the road had aluminum heads with valve seats of a different material.

Another great review Tony! I like the way your excited about the gen 3. They really did do their homework with these. They even picked the minds of the old engine engineers to see what they would change or alter. Later 6.1 and 6.4 are even more impressive, Let alone the hellcats. They only thing I question on them is the totally enclosed camshaft. If you look at any other Chrysler V-8 the top areas of the camshaft tunnel are open or have open slots that allow the drainback oil to flow back down over the camshaft when draining back to the pan. So reduced oil coverage compared to any previous Chrysler V-8. And these new Gen 3 Hemis are the ONLY Chrysler engines to ever have any kind of camshaft/lifter issues.?? Seems like more than a coincidence...... Thanks Tony!

Wish he would build one for himself. Ebay turbo and Holley sniper, not too many wires and computer is built in. Looks like carb and its simple. Basically TBI they have some that support about 850hp 1500$ kit or 600hp kit I got that was 1200$ with high revving n/a motor and put it in a old dart or challenger 👌

I've heard that the stock computer freaks out when you try to run forced induction. Says "too much air!!!" And doesn't know what to do.

TL Norman The ecu is located inside the throttle body injector What could go wrong. I have installed a sniper unit in a ford bronco. ... You have to modify the fuel tank. And in the end. If you ever have a problem out in the real world, your fucked. Like, the tiny wires and micro plugs between the display..... All you gotta do is believe that there is no way a tiny piece of plastic will ever break. Or a tiny wire will never vibrate through the insulation.

@@fastinradfordable yeah, I would rather use one of those mpfi units, even if building the map is a pain in the ass and requires a gaming level computer to to real time adjusting.

Brilliant comparison and exposition on the Hemi's. But I am such a warped individual, I keep eyeing the Slant 6 in back.

Do you remember Wendy O Williams and the Plasmatics? Now we have a new incarnation of : Uncle Tony and the Pragmatics!!! Lol! Get their new album now!!!!! Holy shit sticks Batman, look at the mongonsterous size of the intake valves!!!! Wow!!! They're fucking HUGE!!! Plus, like the old school race Hemis with the double spark plugs, you get your fuel ignited for sure! I wondered why they didn't have 4 valves per chamber, but with monster valves as huge as they are,who needs them!?! Thanks for showing us the guts and stuff guys, I really appreciate it!!!!!

Building my 6.1 hemi now and stuck at full dissemble, I know I'm not in over my head just yet, just stuck at deciding what machine shop things to do like valve guides and if I need to line hone the crank journals.. minimal things preferably. Getting my clearances....just now idk. Just following your videos hoping one day it sparks enough fuel in me to get some progress back on it

Hey Uncle Tony. Love this channel. You're freaking awesome man. But I come here today to warn you of a new parts scam. And this one is good. These people know what they're doing. My son recently purchased an AC condenser off from Amazon. From a place called pit stop auto. The AC condenser arrived, I took it out of the box and checked in my parts, just as we're supposed to do. And the AC condenser coming out of the box, wasn't even close to the one I took off the car. It's so far off... I don't even know what they were aiming for. But... Apparently we do things differently now. So I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I'm thinking that maybe this is a superseded part. Unfortunately, it didn't even fit in the radiator support, in the OEM location. Big warning, right there. So I finagled it in there, and then attempted to hook up the lines. Not even close. No way in God's green earth, this part is for this car. So I called them. To ask if they had possibly shipped me the wrong part number. I gave him the year make and model of the vehicle, 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe 2.3 liter automatic. Very hard car to find. Then he asked me for the VIN number. My automatic response was, the 8th digit of the VIN is a w. In some type of broken English, he said no no no... I need the whole VIN number. I said no you don't. I've been doing this for 25 years, and nobody needs the whole VIN number to order an AC condenser. That's when it hit me. they shipped me the wrong part on purpose. They have my son's information. His address his phone number, all they needed, was the full VIN number, and they got you. They got the ability to digitally file for a new title for the vehicle, in their name. And then it's just a matter of showing up with the police, or a third-party asset recovery company, to take possession of it. all of which can be completely done, over the internet. Without a single person having to look at each other. I've been warning people for years about buying Auto Parts off the internet. Amazon and companies like Amazon, have made it extremely easy for Crooks con men and thieves, to operate on the internet And these guys, are getting extremely sophisticated, and extremely aggressive. Beware, when ordering parts online. It's like a wild west Shooting Gallery out there.

Amazing the size of the oil holes, and I still get better oil pressure than my LS1 when using 5w-20 in thr Hemi.

Always enjoy your videos. The knowledge you have is invaluable. Was thinking about doing something similar here in AZ. Not so much in regards to the In-depth knowledge but more or less how to keep these ole gals on the road and what needs to be done to KISS principle on Mopar, Chevy, and Ford

I distinctly remember you saying a couple of videos ago that you would never even consider a 3rd gen Hemi bc of the oil delivery problems. Anyway, go with after market rotating assembles, valve reliefs and most importantly try using some type of plumbing system to oil the lifters on top of their bores like a greenhouse water delivery system.

The problem I have with the new hemi engine is that the valve seats drop out from an overheat condition caused by the headers. Take a look at the headers. Go ahead. Take a good long look. You see? They just didn't care. The headers have next to no primary runner length to act as a heat dam against the cumulative heat from the exhaust. This cooks the aluminum heads eventually, and the different expansion rates of aluminum vs Stellite alloy take their toll. Cooling system overheat conditions can aggravate this condition. I want to hear your thoughts on this one, Tony.

I wonder if re-aiming those squirters so they spray oil onto the cam and lifters instead, using rods with squirt holes, and a larger oil pump to compensate would fix the cam/lifter failure issues.
@briansignorelli7090 Жыл бұрын
I think your idea is headed right direction and I was thinking more like adding additional squirters to the cam and lifters I'm sure there's guys out there that could do that
