If you like Rush, Floyd, Yes and other old school progressive bands, you will probably love Nightwish. I am from the same era as you and I recently (last year) discovered Nightwish and am obsessed. This band is very musical and melody oriented. Floor Jansen (Yansen) is Dutch and she is a highly trained soprano vocalist. You will not hear another female with the type of versatility and range that she possesses. They play everything from heavy metal to celtic flavored folk music and even throw in a Jazz song because of their want to make great music not focus on a particular genre. However they are considered a symphonic metal band. They are very unique and incredible to watch in a live performance. They even do a cover of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes". Marco the bassist sings this one and it is very well done. Check out the link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqCodaGMmr6Mr68 High Hopes from 2005. Hope you continue the journey of discovery. Be well. Until next time, peace!

I also loved the Iron Maiden point, which was very well picked. Maiden might not be as symphonic in terms of music, but the theatrical part is bang on.

Sorry to correct you. Floor is the best okay, I'll give you that. But we (the Dutch) have got more excelent singers. Try Epica with Simone Simons, Delain with Charlotte Wessels, Within Temptation with Sharon den Adel and last but not least we've got Anneke van Giersbergen. The woman who inspired Floor to sing metal.

Haha Floor Jansen's voice never cracks. She has perfect control over it. She also happens to be the absolute best female vocalist in the world at present. She can do a wide variety of genres and styles, from deep and low metal growls all the way to operatic head voice, passing through popp-y sounds, normal speech voice, top-of-the-lungs belting out etc - and often within the same song. She also recently did a series of performances on a show in her home country, Netherlands - Beste Zangers where she covers an even wider variety of styles. Nightwish is her third band (After Forever and Revamp before that) and she is the band's third (and reportedly final) vocalist. The Nightwish rabbit hole runs very deep my friend, this song is only a small preview of what they can do. There are 3 great shows that are usually recommended for reactors on KZbin by the Nightwish Army, of which I an just the first member to arrive on your channel. Wacken 2013, Tampere 2015 and Wembley 2015. Any song from any of the 3 is a good pick to react to. If you like heavier stuff I recommend Romanticide from Wacken 2013 and Yours Is An Empty Hope from Wembley 2015. If you prefer songs that are more ballad-y and soft then Elan and While Your Lips Are Still Red from either concert are good choices. Either way, other songs like Ever Dream and Storytime (both from Wacken 2013) are good to react to also. You will get more information about the band, its history and members as well as further suggestions from more senior members of the Army who I am sure will follow me shortly.

Hello, @ kerrymac1! Nightwish Army incoming here, your reaction just appear on our radar.. Since this is your first Nightwish experience, here are some info that may help you navigate (a short history of the band, concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a female fronted symphonic metal band. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " Other Nightwish songs with the actual formula of the band you may like: "Song Of Myself" live at Wacken 2013 (dark/metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooLYZoSgnsl7jck "Ever Dream" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6iqhHR8ltd7iMk "Romanticide" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKvCaIJ5eLafjtU "Dead Boy's Poem" - live Buenos Aires 2018 (soulful ballad) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWmoZH9tnMx_g68 "Storytime" live at Tampere 2015 (uplifting vocals) kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4CZXoqhja-MjpI "My Walden" live at Tampere 2015 (celtic / folk) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGm7qKVnoLl4ms0 "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean" live In Buenos Aires 2018 (epic/metal) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmOZo5Ksdr6EZrM And if you want to hear Floor growling :) then try "Yours Is An Empty Hope" live at Wembley 2015 kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKqvpIhthphmac0 Last but not the least - "Noise" music video, it's the first single released a week ago, from their upcoming 2020 album: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpTdeIalnseFm5o You can also react to Floor Jansen's performances in Beste Zangers 2019 (TV show from Netherlands), here is a playlist: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pp2mhJagq6mCgK8 Thank you! @@kerrymac1 I love Floor Jansen's voice and she is my favorite female vocalist in rock and metal when it comes to versatility. Even though overall I like her better than Nightwish's original vocalist, Tarja Turunen, Tarja is still one of my favorite vocalists that I heard in my lifetime. I will link some of Tarja's stuff in this link from this comment section. I will do 4 separate links in the next few hours from Tarja. The 1st one will be with her singing as a backup vocalist with the classic rock band, the Scorpions. The 2nd will be her in a Christmas special singing a Christmas song with former Rainbow vocalist, Joe Lynn Turner. The 3rd video will be Tarja performing live with her own band at a concert in Argentina. The 4th and final video will be Tarja performing an opera in Russia. Hope you enjoy and if you liked any of this stuff than you may consider reacting to other Tarja songs. There are tons of other stuff from Floor Jansen to react to as well like with her old band, After Forever, or her Revamp band, or her stuff with Ayreon which is a project with multiple musicians from many bands performing together, or you can check out Floor Jansen in the Dutch TV show called BesteZangers.

Now there's only one way to go: following the Nightwish path. I'm telling you, sir: There's over 100 great and epic and so beautiful songs waiting you to listening! Ultimate goal is the Greatest Show On Earth, live at Tampere 2015, but I think you should next listen a song from that same Wacken 2013 concert: Song of Myself or Romanticide and then their Pink Floyd tribute song, High Hopes, live in Helsinki 2005 (Marco the bass player sing that song). Or if you like to hear their pipe player, Troy, too, go to Tampere live 2015 and listen a song called My Walden. Nightwish never lets you down, it surprises you almost every time, I promise! Wish you very warmly to Nightwish Family or Army as someones call it.

Greetings from 1st time visitor from Finland. Since you're new to Nightwish, this is a perfect time to share what Steve Harris, the founder, principal composer & bassist/keyboardist of the world's all time greatest metal band IRON MAIDEN said about Tuomas Holopainen & Nightwish with Anette Olzon (Their former vocalist before Floor Jansen) before he had heard their latest 2015 album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" with Floor Jansen on vocals. Steve Harris: "When I heard [2007’s] Dark Passion Play, I couldn’t believe it. I thought, ‘Now, this is a proper fucking album.’ It’s got everything bar the kitchen sink in there. It was controversial because of the new singer Anette Olzon, but she was brilliant. No disrespect to Tarja, but Anette’s voice suited them a lot better. There’s heavy stuff, classical, even a bit of Disney - all kinds of shit in there. I think it’s one of the best-sounding albums I’ve ever heard in my life. Then I got the next one, [2011’s] Imaginaerum. Storytime is a fantastic, instant song. The rest of the album took me a while to get into. Dark Passion Play was so good, I thought there was no way they could ever come up with an album that’s anywhere near that, but the more I got into Imaginaerum, the more I loved it. I haven’t heard the new one with Floor Jansen yet, but those two albums for me - I don’t think there’s anything else that I’ve heard out there that’s even close.” These words from Steve Harris came form this 2015 article in "Metal Hammer" magazine: "How "Nightwish became a modern metal phenomenon" www.loudersound.com/features/how-nightwish-became-a-modern-metal-phenomenon which might be an interesting read to all of their fans. P.S. I've been a RUSH fan ever since I tested my first real stereo system with "Tom Sawyer" back in the day from their "Moving Pictures" album.

@@kerrymac1 unfortunately Nightwish's north American tour is very minimal this year. 2 years ago they had several dozen tour dates for their North American tour and Nightwish had by far their best and most successful North American tour ever. But due to unfortunate stuff that they can't control like this Coronavirus, the USA and other countries from around the world are cutting back on work visas for foreigners out of the fear of this virus. Nightwish probably might eventually add more north American tour dates but they have been around for awhile and know the business end of the music industry with their decades of experience. Jinjer still has their full slate of tour dates for their north American tour but they scheduled this tour before this virus. Once their north American tour starts they might find out that some of these tour dates might need to be canceled due to added paperwork and more increased cost like health test screenings for foreigners coming here with these work visas. Jinjer could still maintain their full tour with selling out most of these venues but also might be in the red financially for this tour with the possibility of outside costs that wasn't expected before they originally scheduled this tour. A majority of these bands and musicians are so dependent on touring and this is where they really make their money if they make any money at all. Things like a worldwide virus, a mother nature type worldwide national disaster, or a anti immigrant anti work visas for foreigners type of political climate in some countries has a tremendous impact on a large majority of these bands and all these musicians and the people working with these bands and musicians like their sound check people and many other people that we don't see at these live shows.

The music is called symphonic metal and is very populair in Europe and South America. The band is from Finland and founded in 1996. So far the band has had 3 vocalists 1 Tarja Turunen (Finish) pure opera voice also very good live. (until 2005) 2 Anette Olzon (Swedish) more pop style. fine in the studio but not good live. (until 2012) 3 Floor Jansen* (Dutch) (current). * She is the vocalist you saw in this clip. She has a classical vocal background education and can sing any style she likes from jazz to opera high to growling low. Believe me when i tell you you have not even scratched the surface yet of what she's capable of. Band members Tuomas Holopainen (The keyboard player and creative mind behind the band. He writes about 95% of the music and lyrics) Marco Hietela (the viking with the long beard (Bass and vocals) Jukka "Julius" Nevalainen (The drummer) Erno "Emppu" Vuorinen (the hobbit like guitar player) Troy Donockley ( a person who did not play on this song but is a multi instrumentalist from the UK) The clip was shot a few months after Floor jointed the band right in the middle of their US leg of the world tour. They asked her to join after tensions between the previous (Anette) vocalist and the rest of the band had rissen so high that they fired her. With close to a year still to go to complete the tour, and their next concert planned 2 day later they, needed a replacement fast. They called Floor because she had toured with them when she was part of the support bands"After Forever" and later "Revamp" on several occasions and they were quiet impressed by her vocals (who would not be?). She only had 2 days, including a flight from the Netherlands to the US, to learn the setlist and only had one rehearsal with the band a couple of hours before her first show and nailed it. Since they were making a documentary about the world-tour a lot of what happened was recorded. The documentary is called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJmoqZ6jjLCAe7c ) As a next song to take a look at i would recommend their masterpiece "The poet and the pendulum" live at Wembley. Before you take a look at it i would recommend to take a look at the backstory of this song. This will make you appreciate it much more. here is the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZPRanqZr751odk BTW that last note she just sang? Nightwish fans created a whole new word for when she does something impressive like that. We call it a Floorgasm. Welcome to the club and boy are you going to receive a lot of traffic on your channel. ;-)

Them being symphonic metal allows them to take their music in several different directions. They have the long epic multipart full production type songs like Ghost Love Score, The Poet and the Pendulum or The Greatest Show on Earth.. Then they have several of the more classic thrash heavy metal style songs lice Romanticide, or Song of Myself or Dark Chest of Wonders.. They even have a very celtic rock sound going on in songs like E'lan or My Walden.. You chose, but the Nightwish Army loves it all..

She was on a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers, when she went on there she was relative unknoww in her home country, while being well know all over the world. They took 7 Dutch singers and each night one would be in the hot seat and the other 6 would sing to they songs that meant something to the one in the hot seat, and then two nights of duets. In this show Floor showed she is the best in the world, singing many different genres and in 4 different languages. she blew the other singers away, check out "Mama", "Winner, "Shallow" and the top "PHantom of the Opera" aduet she did with Henk Poort, the orginl Dutch Phantom, who Floor saw when she was 11, and he became her idol, and now they are best friends. Floor did 10 solo shows in Holland and they all sold out in mere hours, and Henk Poort will be joining her, and also will join Nightwish on their Dutch tour dates, so yes she is the best in the world, and this is from multiple sources, not just fans. Nightwish is a live band you have to see them live to experience the depth of the songs the emotion and the energy they put into each and every one, and never a miscue, always spot on. I have seen them maybe 50 times all over the world and they never disappoint.

Kerrymac1 or anyone that likes to do reaction videos. Take a concert video from one of your favorite bands or bands like Nightwish and some of these other bands that people are suggesting and watch them playing in these South American countries like Chile, Brazil and Argentina. These concerts with the great crowd participation are worth watching and doing a reaction video about not just the bands but also the audience. I think in the USA we do a very good job in supporting these bands and have good reactions with crowd participation but these South Americans make us look lame even though we aren't lame.

Some footage I came across. And therefore, this might be valid information for some: I saw an interview with Floor, where she explains that how after her studying music, and then adding the classic education on top, she felt like: "where to go from here?" And stated, that her choice was make, when listening to Annecke van Giersbergen, performing "Strange machines" with her band The Gathering. Worth, listening to, I guess, when this was impressing Floor this much. Here is my favourite version. Live at the pinkpop festival. Plus I'm a sci-fi fan. Yeah... Nightwish is awesome! Did hear about them in 2002, but i didn't really get the feel for the band until 2 years back. Mostly because the vocals never got me really interested. The current singer is of an completely different breed. Changing the style numerous of times during a concert to fit the mood. I heard you mentioned Rush and Pink Floyd... Ever heard about Steven Wilson? Except from producing some great prog albums last years, and remastering the King Crimson catalogue, he is considered the Roger Waters of the 2000s. With a back-catalogue With many different bands. Most famous under his own name…. But most of all his breakthrough With Porcupine Tree. I recommend listening to "Anesthetize" (live Tillburg). 17 mins of pure musical bliss.
