John digs into the pantry and makes an old fashioned Reuben sandwich. It brings back memories and makes it delicious.

Would have liked to see the flip. Looks like something I will make.

The clear, jelly like stuff is gelatin, not fat.

The "fat" he's said he was getting rid of is actually collagen and is very good for you

Man, that's how I grew up and thought that was the way you made Reubens all over lol. This brought me back. Of course, we were extra cheap and substituted thousand island for Yellow mustard. When I tried a traditional Reuben it floored me , but I still long for this old style to be honest from time to time!

My local Fry's [a Kroger affiliate] has been selling Kroger Canned Corn Beef at 2/$5. I stocked up.

I just brown a can of corned beef. I added ground pepper. I love it browned, hmm. Since there are left overs I be making a Ruben with the rest of it. I can't resist reheated canned corn beef. Oh, I also grew up using mustard insteat of thousand island... Loved this walk down memory lane! Did you ever eat fried bologna sammies or liverworst?

Still love fried bologna! Haven’t had liverwurst since I was a kid!

I REALLY need to take you to a real Jewish deli to get some REAL corned beef. Did you know that Reubens were actually invented in Nebraska? P.S. a REAL Reuben has to be served with a huge kosher dill pickle and a can of Doctor Brown’s cream soda or root beer.

I’ve had great Reubens at the Stage Deli, and Sly man’s in Cleveland. And yes, I do a couple dill pickle spears with mine! And I had no idea they were invented in Nebraska!

Dill pickles, I love, but my ulcer doesn’t and root beer is just nasty. 😂

Oh boy...that thick meat did NOT look good John. First time Ive thought that about anything youve fixed. We always use the Buddig corned beef...the paper thin stuff..2 pkgs per sandwich. But if you and the missus like it..go for it!
@JohnEatsCheap Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it was too thick. I love the Buddig, too. Reminds me of the sandwiches my mom made for me for school lunch!
@Ellyn1974 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnEatsCheap We must be close to the same age because Buddig Chicken, Turkey and Ham were the main staple in my school lunches too!!! And one of those snack size bags of potato chips or cheese curls! The good ol days! Thanks for all your videos!

I’ve never wanted a rueben in my life, but I thought this looked great.

I bought a few cans to store in my pantry for emergency. I’m in Fla. hurricanes are often . I stored a nice full pantry with home canned foods , dehydrated foods. Corned beef is on my shelves. I seared my canned corn beef it made it wonderful . Today I’m going to make a Ruben . With it. Next I’ll buy a corned beef roast and boil it and try that as a test. I’m going to use homemade Russian dressing.

I prefer this over the thin sliced meat. I want either fresh chunky corned beef or canned. Mmmmm

Needs more corned beef.

I would sear off both sides of that corned beef first before assembling.

Why did you keep it in the freezer?
@JohnEatsCheap Жыл бұрын
We’d make a bunch and freeze them because the lasted longer. When you wanted one, you thawed it out and griddled it up!
