Antique old ship compass restoration and repair. I decided to restore an old ship's compass. The compass was in bad condition. I cleaned it and restored it. The compass was made in Japan in 1970-1980. I hope you liked my restoration.

That is no where big enough to be from a ship. It's for just a motor boat that you would go skiing or pleasure fishing size boat. Great looking restoration and I hope you put the magnets back in right with not knowing much about compasses. But you did a great job restoring it it does look great!! Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up for your channel

Yes, this should have been filled with oil, or an ethanol/water mixture, so the liquid damps the card, and magnifies it, as the bezel is removed to get to the compass you can see liquid under it, and there is a small fill screw in the plastic compass case visible, but other than that a good job.

Interesting. Does those two magnets in the lower section have to be calibrated and geared in a certain position depending where you are when it is reassembly? I was thinking that they are there to cancel out stray magnetic deviations according to North pole alignment from where you are at the time and than as the compass moves the gear are correcting from than on... IDK, just wondering... Nice refurbish though.

The magnetic correctors are used to 'swing' the compass in the vessel it's fitted to, they are used to tune out as much deviation as possible caused by the metal and electrical systems on a vessel near where your compass is mounted. If not adjusted correctly the compass will read incorrectly to varying degrees depending on the heading. This is very important as a deviation as little as a couple of degrees can be very dangerous over any distance if you are relying on the compass for navigation through dangerous waters. That compass might now appear pretty and looks OK as an ornament on a desk - but it is of no practical use anyway without repairing the bellows or seals and refilling with mineral oil or similar to dampen the movement of the card. Trying to use that compass without damping fluid will not work on any boat...

Sorry friend, but it was a nice cleaning and painting job! Restoration & repair is when you put it back in working conditions!! You need to put the magnets correctly, use a simulator of eath magnetic field to calibrate, and fill it with Isopar L (dampening fluid!) Then it will be restored! You stoped the job half done, but well done! Sorry to say
