Wow, through your videos, we have learnt that legally, the storage company has to try to contact the owners of the goods. They wouldn’t risk their business, by selling a unit, without having attempted to contact the owner. So, we know she’s telling lies. I’d let her know, that she can collect her personal items from the office in 2 days time, where you will leave it. Like you said, she knew the auction was on , so she must’ve had contact. The more you talk to these people, the more the bullshit you hear.

I understand that situations can occur in people's lives where they become unable to meet their financial responsibilities, including paying for their storage fees, but as with anything in life, we sometimes need to go through the bad times in order to better appreciate the good things that we've been blessed with. Most possessions can be replaced. I've started over more than once, and God has always replaced those things that I needed for my household.

I've had this happen a few times when buying units. If they want to give me their number I collect personal items and return them. If there is certain items they want I'll sell it to them for a reasonable amount. As long as they treat me with respect I treat them the same way.

Recently I lost my storage unit and everything I owned because 3 years ago I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure . I can no longer work due to my health and I lost my place. For a year and a half I lived in a garage ,had a stroke and had to decide on getting in a better living environment, eating or paying for the unit. It was the hardest thing to do by watching everything I had worked years to get disappear from my grasp. . God has a reason for everything that happens to us and knows best. I just thank God to be alive.

I actually had a unit in Charlotte when I moved out of my apartment, I missed the December payment and my mail wasn’t forwarded and they sold it the first week of January. I owed less than $200. I don’t blame the business it was my fault I missed the payment, but I thought a month was a little ridiculous.

Not always the case. Because of a filing error a uhaul storage place in Las Vegas sold my unit and my boat without ever notifying me and was not behind on payment. I sued them but still only got half my money (value) back. Don't always be so quick to shit on people, fucked up stuff happens every day.

I agree with everything you have said. People can't expect business owners to get taken advantage of over and over. There comes a time when you need to hold yourself accountable for your actions.. Or lack of action. The lady didn't just happen to show up on the day AND time without knowledge of her unit being put up for auction, come on now. She's lucky this man was nice enough to give her photos back. My mom lost everything from both her childhood and mine in a storage unit and she would have NEVER gone and asked for anything back. She knew she wasn't able to pay. Of course it sucks that I'm missing things from my childhood, but life goes on. She was a single mother and did what she could, and always held herself accountable for things like this.

I lost a unit I was renting up in Justice IL at Public Storage back around 1992. I was between Jobs and just got behind but the real beef I Had was that Public Storage would not let me make payments to get caught up. They wanted full payment plus they want me to move my stuff after I paid them. I lost a lot in tools in that unit. Truthfully I think the storage manager and his wife which lived on the property took my tools before the auction. That may have been why they wanted full payment to stop the auction. A friend of mine that had been to my unit with me several times went to the auction and he told me that the unit looked like it had been gone through with things just thrown everywhere. It was organized before I had lost it. At the auction he said he looked but my tool boxes were not even in the unit.

Business is business, for sure. There are circumstances that come up in life where someone may not be able to pay on the unit for a while, but you'll find that a vast number of self storage businesses will work with the customer until they can get back on their feet, as long as it doesn't take too long. Depending on the situation, some businesses may wave late and lien fees if you end up making a full payment once you get back on your feet, but they're not going to hold on to those units forever.

I am in agreeance with most comments here. I was thinking they had to send a registered letter. A letter someone had to sign for. She was hoping her tears would pull at the buyer's heart strings. I am soft hearted also and would be hard to say no. But as was said she is an adult and knew she had this monthly bill. I am sorry things are tough for her, but it's tough for lots of folks. 99% she is lying! I had storage that almost went to auction, this was a long time ago. I had moved twice and they still sent me notices because even if you don't tell the facility your new address, most people change their address with the post office but if you didn't then you will eventually get the mail from your old address with a yellow sticker on it!!

Yes, if you've put in for a change of address, the you'll get your forwarded mail. Unfortunately, plenty of people move and don't put in for a change of address. I worked for a self storage company for 5 years and we'd always get bills and other mail returned to the office. When they can't be contacted by mail or by phone, you know you have a problem.

As for two sides of this story, from someone who lost my paraplegic mother's scrapbook, the Breyer horses, and my mother's art books and photos due to getting behind from having to deal with emotional and physical abuse, I am thankful this woman was given her photos and personal items back. I wasn't given that luxury. It haunts me to this day that I don't have my mother's things as she's been gone 29 years June 28, 2019. I'm glad that man had a heart.

My parents owned many apartment buildings when I was growing up, so I had the experience of dealing with renters. Mostly good, but a few scoundrels who would try all kinds of ploys to get out of paying their rent and still live In the apartment. More than once I was confronted by former renters who would come back to tell me they have a right to the furniture what was left months ago. Their goods and furniture went out on the sidewalk for the rubbish collector to take away. This was after the local sheriff had evicted them. Human nature is a strange thing, some people try to concoct their own rules.

a sample question here. so you have a unit on which the previous renter owes $1000. they don't pay & it goes up for auction. 1st, is the previous renter allowed to bid? and 2nd, if they are allowed to bid & they buy it back at $600, are they still obligated to pay back they remaining $400 before accessing the unit?

1.) They are not allowed to bid on their unit ... they are ONLY allow to pay their unpaid balance before the auction! 2.) This unpaid balance will be reflected on their credit report

I bought 4 units at one auction a few years ago. Spent 790 dollars, that same day the old owners came and tried to get into my lockers. When I pulled up with the trailer security had to remove them, The one guy got in my face about it so I just went to the office and told them what was going on and they called the cops. Never mess with an irate old owner. I took all personal belongings and pictures to the office for the owners but yeah. I own it, I was doing this for my business. It's just best to have the storage facility deal with the customers and not start anything.

Hit the dislike button two times...lol... Seriously though, I worked for a self storage company for 5 years and I saw a lot. I've also been homeless, so I've experienced a lot in that aspect as well. This is what I've learned. There are a vast number of people who play the system and who prey on the emotions of good people in order to take advantage of them and get what they want. You said that you've been taken advantage of, well, I feel you brother, because so have I. I used to give people the benefit of the doubt. My wife could never understand that. After what I've seen and experienced, I find that I don't often do that anymore. It's sad, but it's the world we live in. Too many people want something for nothing and they'll take advantage of whoever they need to in order to get what they want. They tell sob stories and even shed some tears to try to soften a good person's heart to the point where their emotions overrule their wisdom, and that's when they've got ya. What's really bold is after they've taken advantage of you, they'll say, "God bless." What?!? I don't know how someone can live their life taking advantage of other people, but I guess if it's working for them then they're not going to give up on the practice.

In the state I live in, buyers are required to separate out the personals as best as they can when emptying out the unit. It then gets marked with the unit number and placed in a secure area where they're held for 90 days so that the former customer can come and retrieve them.

Even if the previous owner was not sent bills- the responsible thing to do would be to contact the storage unit and make sure the monthly payment was paid as per the contract that was signed. I can't help but wonder what goes through their mind when they don't pay their bills. If I were in approached by a previous owner, I would hand over personal items that were of no real value to me and allow them an opportunity to buy back items of value.

If a person cared so much and was storing their prize possessions in an unit and saving it to give others, then they should’ve been more responsible. They probably tossed the bill in the bin. I have a storage unit from an apartment I had 5 years ago. My niece who is a freshman in college wants the furniture when she graduates. I may. To go to the unit often but I know when to pay the bill. So, I would not let her have any of it. Sometimes you have to rough with these people.

I would return personal items , things you can not sell. Like photos and such. In fact I would get in contact and try and return any personal items I would find whether they show up or not. It is just the right thing to do. Anything I could sell, well that is mine, they could buy it back. Not everyone is like this lady and just being shady. It's really sad, people are having such a hard time these days and many are losing everything through no fault of their own. My heart goes out to them. However I don't believe the ladies story. The storage facility is in the space renting business, Not the contents selling business. The last thing they want is to sell someone's possessions out from under them. Even from a money point of view, they recieved far less money auctioning the contents off then they would have been owed in back rent. It really is worth they're while to work with the customer to collect rent owed rather then to resort to selling everything by public auction. I don't know the owner's situation but I don't believe her version of events. I think your friend was extremely gracious in how he handled things. I can tell it affected him as it would me and I'm sure it affects you as well. It's tough to have a kind heart sometimes.

i won a unit yesterday that the previous owner owed 250 on it, he kept begging me to make a deal and negotiate with him on the unit, but he couldn't pay for it and he didn't have cash on him to give me, so i just told him, you gotta talk to them, because i didn't know what to do, it was my first ever unit won and it wasnt much in there, but if i give him the unit back for a particular amount or whatever, who's to say that they don't clean it out completely and i get banned from auctions on my first ever trip? i was remorseful and felt a little sorry, but hey, you had ??? months to pay for it and didn't pay for it and now you trying to negotiate with me, but you already had time to pay and didn't have the money when i was there, what do i do? they swiped his card 4 times and nothing, the auctioneer was then late to the next auction and everything... and yes, this happened yesterday 8/22/19. so, i'm going to pick it up at a very unique time so there's no other confrontations and i'll just leave any papers with information at the front desk for them to give back to the owner. that's all i can think of.

I was going to comment on how did she know her stuff was going to be sold that day. I would never believe what the owner said. I would tell them that they can come back later and pick up their personal papers, family photos and kids drawings from the office. All of the other items has been bought by me. Now I would also give back some military items that belonged to a deceased relative
