Exactly. I honestly feel bad for Roman-Catholics because us Eastern Catholics have our ancient liturgies and the Roman Catholics have a Novus Ordo as their standard liturgical practice. Obviously, I’m not saying the Novus Ordo is not efficacious and good. However, going back to the TLM for Roman Catholics will bring a sense of awe, mystery, beauty, and ancient tradition, like I get every Sunday when I’m in my SyroMalabar-Catholic Church.

@marynadononeill So you can't hear what is being said, you have an intermediary between you and God, contrary to the new testament, reoffering in your view Jesus own sacfrifice by a Priest, contrary to the new testament that says that Jesus died "once and for all". Medieval nonsense.
@andrewokr162 күн бұрын
@@tcrosslinho5565 The priest isn't an intermediary, he's an active participant in the worship. It's incumbent on the congregation to understand what's going on, most have a missal with the prayers in them, and to worship alongside the priest.

The Novus Ordo Mass invented in the late 1960’s by a handful of radical bishops and cardinals was NOT what the bishops of Vatican II authorized. The latter never asked for the whole Mass to be rendered into vernacular languages; Latin was to be kept. They never asked for a wholesale rewriting of the Mass to make it a conversation between priest and people instead of an awe-inspiring act of communication with God. They never asked for the priest to turn around to face the people even as he was clearly addressing God. They never asked for the glorious heritage of Gregorian Chant to be replaced with banal faux folk-music tunes that were laughably out of fashion even before they were published. Thank God that young Catholics now are flocking to the Traditional Latin Mass!

God is truly among us during and after the Traditional 2:44 Latin Mass. Instead, I sort of felt like the congregation was like the people of Israel standing behind the priest who was like Moses talking to God. It sort of put the tabernacle holding God back into the center of things and shifted my perspective on how this is about the love of God and God's understanding, not limited human understanding. I understand what Vatican II was trying to do and that they had good intentions, but the TLM felt like more love, not less, and I felt like 'this is the real, true Catholic Church'. And I realized, all this beauty in the TLM comes from love.

In reality, the Church did not call for huge reforms of the Mass. The reforms went too far, mostly because of corruption within the hierarchy. we did have a Mass according to Vatican 2: It's the 1965 Missal. Prayers at the foot of the altar are a bit changed (Psalm 42/41 "Iudica me Deus" is removed), Prayers of the faithful were introduced and the last Gospel was made optional. Vernacular was permitted, but the prayers stayed the same.

Almost no one is doing this in the main Church but every priest knows this and will administer on the tongue. Keep your hands in prayer position and reverently present your tongue to receive Our Lord. It has become the custom to use the hand almost exclusively (and is permitted to take it in the hand) but you don't have to. Start the change in the 'new' mass. It's amazing to be able to receive reverently. Never have to take in the hand again.

If you need a missal for translating the Latin, they are red and can be found at the back of the church. I've never thought of it as "with his back to the people" - I've always seen it as facing "with the people" toward God. Also, regarding the inaudible prayers - they are indeed spoken, but one must remember that this liturgy predates by many centuries the invention of the microphone, so no one would have expected to hear every word. Silence is a profound reverence (think of "a minute of silence" at solemn events) and intimacy (think of a couple in love, gazing wordlessly into each other's eyes). At the Latin Mass, we're given that opportunity to fall in love with God and experience that intimacy with Him. There's so little silence and intimacy in today's noisy world, it's no wonder that this attracts people of all ages.

Only one said - paraphrasing - if it is from man, it will fail. But if this is from God, you will find yourself fighting God! And so Francis and cabal try to stop this. The more vicious they get, the more proverbial rope.

"not just nostalgia" Is a terrible way to put it, the mass was inaccessible for two generations, yet the largest population is of millenials, who were only able to attend for the first time when they were teens. The Father choked up for a second when he said the prayers were for God, because he has lived most of his priesthood forcibly oriented away from the Lord by these devious alterations to the church that occurred in the 1960s.

This is what young people crave. In Canada in the province that we are in, there is only one Latin mass a year and that’s if we are lucky. But every single time it is packed full of young families and babies. The new form of the mass which we have no choice to attend has very little young people. And the young people that we do see are traditional! When will the Church realize that this is the way worship should be done.

The LM is the Mass celebrated for 90% of Church history and yet it's like something new to these parishioners. So much so it made the news. I wish I could tell them all, it's what YOU have been experiencing your whole life that's new. The "new" Mass was created in the 60's with the help of Protestants. I implore every Catholic to look into what happened to form the new liturgy. You'll be surprised. When I took my wife, a cradle Catholic, to the LM she cried. She said she felt like she had been robbed and in a sense, she was.
@Microspectrophotometer2 күн бұрын
It was not created with the help of protestants. There were protestant OBSERVERS at the Council, who in no way influenced it. People from heretical and schismatic sects were invited to the Council of Trent, too. I don’t recall if they actually came, or if they were just invited, but one of those is true.

Well, all well and good, but the Tridentine Mass goes back only to 1570, to the Council of Trent. Before then, you had a variety of liturgies, however, they were usually similar to each other, and incorporated the basics--ad orientam, Latin, Communion on the tongue, etc.

@@constitutionman9026not true. The Tridentine Mass was already basically in place at the time of Pope Saint Gregory, growing organically from the Apostolic age. Even with so many Latin-Mass-only parishes, the people seem to be thirsting for the Tridentine mass that connects us to the liturgy that sustained centuries of the faithful across the globe; at my parish, we have 8 masses on Sunday (including 2 sung or high masses) plus daily mass the rest of the week, and confession is available at least 5x a week. I moved here specifically for availability of the TLM, and I fervently pray that it will be readily available to all Catholics everywhere.

"This" is the way the Mass was in all Roman Catholic churches worldwide basically from the 4th century up until around 1970. The Second Vatican Council with its new "Novus Ordo" mass unintentionally caused people to become too "familiar" with God. And when you bring God down to the level of man, you often forget to look up to Him.
@doverbeachcomber3 күн бұрын
Well put.

Unsubstantiated claims. Christ promised that the gates of Hell would not prevail and they have not, and will not. The Council of Trent anathemizes the opinion that “the ceremonies, vestments, and outward signs, which the Catholic Church makes use of in the celebration of masses, are incentives to impiety, rather than offices of piety”. Whatever the Church gives us is valid and good. I also personally prefer the Tridentine form of the Mass, and any abuses in either form are certainly reprehensible, but there is nothing wrong with the NO as such, it is valid and licit. Yes, there could be discussions about certain changes and whether or not they were beneficial, but we ought to leave that to the Church.

@Microspectrophotometer Thanks for your reply! I remember that from the Trent documents as I read the "Catechism of the Council of Trent for Parish Priests" from cover-to cover decades ago along with the related documents. I endured the liturgical craziness of post-Vatican 2. Did you personally attend Novus Ordo masses back in the early to mid-1970's? If so, do you remember when the wine Consecration formulae said "...for all men..."? The Feminist Movement/Women's Libbers threw a fit and the Church in North America was forced to change the wording to "... for all..." and it remained that way until Pope Benedict XVI came along and corrected the Consecration formula once and for all to conform with Sacred Scripture along with other errors that were contained in the Novus Ordo mass. Yes, the Novus Ordo is valid, but I have had many priests tell me that the (old) Latin Mass "is a better way to God". -- John L.

I remember when I was in the seminary, I asked for the Novus Ordo to be celebrated in Latin- the official language of the Church. The Rector looked at me with disdain and that was pretty much the end of my vocation. I did not ask for the Tridentine rite, but the Mass celebrated all over the planet in every human language spoken- but Latin was the problem. When you go to the Vatican, even the ATMs are in Latin.

I see his description as accurate, not hostile. The Traditional Latin Mass is significantly different than the Novus Ordo, and it can be a startling experience for someone who is not familiar with it. The Traditional Latin Mass has not been regularly used since the 1960s. Anyone familiar with it at that time would be in his 60s or older now.

I could not agree more with the statement that this is the true Mass and absolutely more meaningful theologically. It is not just about the beauty of the Mass, but the true doctrine and teachings of the Church. I pray more people who are attracted to the beauty of the Mass will find their way to learning what was lost with Vatican II.
@JohnParks-zc1pn3 күн бұрын
@RobertoHernandez-rq5bf Prior to Benedict's motu propio, it was restricted after Vatican 2. The TLM dates from 1570. The Ambrosian Rite used in Milan and the Eastern Catholic Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom are older.
@RobertoHernandez-rq5bf2 күн бұрын
@JohnParks-zc1pn In fact, it was in 1570 that Pope Pious V, in his Bull Quo Primum, gave the Latin Mass its final form as an evolution of various previous rites, which makes the Mass as old as those rites it's rooted in. By the way, in that same Bull, he stated that his missal could never be abrogated or modified, which is exactly what Vatican II, and more recently, "pope" Francis did.
