Old Top gear from 1992. The team look at the new laws which mean that tyre treads have to be thicker. They also compare the stopping distance between cars with tyres which the old law stated, and the new one. Taken from season 15, episode 1.

Wow. A car with zero tread still stops in the wet? o___o

It's an interesting stat that more tread doesn't equate to better grip in the wet, although at 2:55 you can clearly hear the 7mm tread squealing off the tarmac on the wet road.

@mohammedosman88 If the wheels lock up during hard braking (No ABS on the red car), the RPM reduces to zero and the engine will stall. So that's why he presses the clutch down al well as the brake. During normal braking the wheels wouldn't lock up so you could use the engine braking as an additional slowing down effect.

Get a 2018 volvo and you see short breaks, what an improvement over 28 years in truck safety

Just wear the tires down to the cords and see what happens! This is the hillbilly standard!

I thought you were supposed to pump the brake pedal on non-ABS cars if they locked up?

Only on wet or icy surface. In the dry, you slow down better if you lock up. And of course, you should pump the brake if you want to brake and steer too.

Pump? My car doesn't have ABS (Honda version of the car used here), I just let it off slightly, keeping it on the edge of traction. Seems to slow it fastest.

kaptinkeiff this is the proper way of doing it this is how rally and racing drivers do it. I had an abs malfunction and luckily I did this braking automatically which saved me from crashing.
@leopold7562

It's called "cadence braking" and the idea is you release and reapply the brakes to prevent them locking up. It's a myth that locking up the brakes slows you faster, as breaking traction means you're sliding rather than stopping.

6:15 40 Yards @ 60 mph is quite short but for a good car it should just about be enough

@Joshuadrooney , And what about engine braking? I always keep the car in gear while braking to make the brakes more effective and just before the car stops I press the clutch, This is the pro way IMHO.
@mattarnold198
@mattarnold198 7 жыл бұрын
The pro way is to downshift as you brake and blip the throttle each time you disengage the clutch. It's more effective and easier to do with longer gears as an engine would decelerate quicker from 7,000 rpm to 6,000 than from 6,000 to 5,000 and if it's connected to the driving wheels, they too decelerate quicker.

eevee trained ninjask Breaking with the clutch down removes engine breaking from the equation, maybe necessery for this test, but the addition of engine breaking does help in slowing the car quicker

mohammedosman88 Because you don't want to kill the engine, with the engine off the breake servo and stearing servo don't work (excuse my bad english)
