I bought a next canoe with matching paddle. It's great little boat but I flipped it and it doesn't float when swamped like he said, it's neutrally buoyant at best. I like that it is built like a tank because I use it in the Louisiana swamps so I'm always crossing fallen trees and stumps and it can really take a beating. Tracking is good and speed is similar to recreational kayaks.
@ryanleeoakes20154 жыл бұрын
As longs as it doesn’t sink then the design has done its job. Most boats have huge pieces of foam at the bow and stern which will keep it from sinking when capsized. Very much the same as when you flipped yours but you gain all the room back with the foam core feature

The NEXT has a problem with the seat coming out of the U-shaped plastic holders when the canoe flexes or you twist hard, but I fixed it. Instead of the stainless steel pins going through the plastic holes of the U-channels, OVER the aluminum rods, I drilled holes 7/16 below the existing ones, and THROUGH the aluminum rods, pinning them vertically and horizontally, preventing them from flexing out of the U-channels.

You ever tried keeping a minnow bucket on a yak? Yaks are great but I can hold more fishing gear in a canoe unless im travelling light then I'll use a kayak. But I'm usually taking a huge 5 trey tackle box and like 4 rods a bucket of minnows an anchor and a bag with food and water and a pillow to sit on cause I'm usually out for hours. I couldnt go kayaking with all that if I tried so I'm more a canoe guy than a yak guy. Hell I should just ditch both and get a Jon boat.

"Only weighs 59 pounds?" That sounds to me like putting positive spin on a negative spec! Heck that's within 5 lbs of the 16' fiberglass Mad River Malecite I used to own. I have the Old Town predecessor, the Pack, Royalex and weighs and honest 33#. I wouldn't trade it for a Pro Angler! Too bad about stopping the production of Royalex and the much heavier weight of its replacements. A Canadian company is making a kevlar canoe also called Pack. It weighs 25# but costs $2600!
@lunkydog5 жыл бұрын
I couldn't believe it when I heard that weight. Same thing, I've had a 33# Pack 12 for over 20years. I lowered the seat 3/4" and moved it rearward about 1 3/8" to better balance with a 60# dog passenger that likes to recreate Titanic by standing in the bow.

@LancasterCountyMarine4 жыл бұрын
You fit the boat, but maybe should look at a different kayak with storage thats larger to handle your weight. The ideal paddler of the NEXT would be under 230 lbs. Look at the Old Town Castine 145, large room in the cockpit for your build, and dual dry bulkhead compartments. -Isaiah

@LancasterCountyMarine4 жыл бұрын
@3XR5 when we give out numbers for “ideal paddler capacity” we are considering factors such as how deep the boat sits in the water and paddling efficiency. A guy at 300 lbs would be more suited to a larger boat that will draft less water and by doing so, for each paddle stroke move easier through the water. The next can handle a 300 lb paddler, it’s just not a perfect match.

I'm 6'2 " 275 lbs I have and love a Pungo 140 The Pungo weighs 56 lbs The Pungo has a maximum capacity of 350 lbs In February I want to paddle the 100 miles of the Wilderness Waterway in Everglades NP There is no potable water on that trip and the NPS says that I should plan for a 9 day trip and carry 9 gallons of water 9 gallons of water +containers weighs at least 85 lbs So 275 +85=360 So I need a boat that can handle at least 425 lbs Is the Next the right boat for that trip ? One thing that I really love about the Pungo is that it's unsinkable Is the Next also unsinkable ? I have paddled among many alligators and the idea of abandoning a boat that is sinking and swimming to safety among the gators is an idea that I don't find to be the least bit appealing Is the Next unsinkable ?
@LancasterCountyMarine5 жыл бұрын
Nicky, you really should be looking at a different Canoe for your trip. The NEXT is designed as a recreational Canoe, and the numbers for your gear, and yourself don't really work. What I would recommend looking at would be a lightweight larger Canoe, at least 15' in length to give you the cargo capacity that you require. Also, air bags are a must in a canoe to make it unsinkable. So my opinion, look at the Esquif Huron 15 or 16. That will give you the cargo room for your gear plus air bags in the ends. The 16 will disperse the weight the best and give you a great ride. -Isaiah

@MagnusHedemark7 жыл бұрын
It's not 59 pounds. I have one. It's much worse than that. I believe Old Town overestimates weight capacity and understates weight. Maybe that's a bare hull without the seat or footpegs. But the complete canoe is over 70 pounds dry.
@jarvisrinklebaker54507 жыл бұрын
Magnus Hedemark mine is almost 65lbs with seat and foot rails. You're close with 70, but far off in this realm. I weighed mine on a deer weight hanging scale. Old Town says the listed weight is empty hull only. So they are spot on at 59lbs.
@MagnusHedemark7 жыл бұрын
Hey sorry... I misstated the weight from memory. I went back and weighed it again and my actual number is closer to yours. Mine was about 64 pounds as delivered. The empty hull number is really misleading. That's like Ford advertising the weight of the mustang without the interior. The partial canoe isn't the weight people have to carry; it's the whole enchilada that matters. And that is a very portly ~64-65 pounds (for a 13 foot canoe, really, it's a lot!)
@jarvisrinklebaker54507 жыл бұрын
Magnus Hedemark I'll take the weight since it affords durability and reduces the need to baby the craft and worry about rocks.

I'm taking my family paddling today on the river. Old Town Next, Dagger Axis 12.0, and Old Town Camper 16RX. That 16 foot Royalex boat is actually lighter. Crazy! And no babying it around rocks.
