Old Town Sportsman VS Hobie PA 360 I FULL WALKTHROUGH AND REVIEW

Before I made the leap in purchasing the Hobie PA 360 I was incredibly torn between the Hobie PA and the Old Town Sportsman. Both kayaks were new, expensive and feature packed. My previous kayak was an Old Town Predator, which I loved, and it was really hard for me to decide between the newest Hobie or Old Town. After fishing extensively out of the Hobie Pro Angler and spending 2 FULL days on the water with an Old Town Sportsman I have a pretty good feel for both. These are probably two of the top fishing kayaks available and you'll probably be very happy with either one but there are some key differences you should be aware of if you're choosing between these two.

There is no competition or equal, to the Hobie 360 drive. It is the cream of the crop, handsdown. No others do what it does. Also, their seat is 100% better than any other, period. About the weight, well I dont know anyone that does not use some sort of wheeled dolly for transportation. Whose gonna be carryina a fishing kayak anywhere, anyway !!! Its is wide and very stable. The Hobie PA14 360 is #1 all the way around. The price reflects all of the great engineering put into this boat. The rudders that are easily raised and the retractable transducer mount.

I bought a PA14 360 and I really like it a lot. I also just bought a PDL 120 for my wife. I tried a cruise on my buddy's PDL and I really liked it. I agree about the speed of the old town. There are things I like and don't like about each. One thing I think that old town wins is the rudder deployment. It seems like every time I am landing on my Hobie I have to fumble a little to pull my rudder up. I like how pulling the drive kinda keeps a little more space available on the old down. The Hobie bow storage is really nice in the accessibility and way better than the old town to maximize my capacity in it I have taken out the white bin and store only non water sensitive things in it. Still, I've only ever had less than a tablespoon in that area when I have found water in it. I have a love hate relationship with the rod tubes in my Hobie. They're so nice for having a good number of rods available but I've bent a few spinning rod guides trying to get them stowed and it takes a bit of jockeying to get rods much longer than 6'6" in and out of them while seated. I like the tubes more than what little rod or other storage comes on the old town. I'll probably build a side saddle arrangement for the old town to help with rod storage. I think the fish finder setup and installation will be a win for the Hobie but I haven't started on the old town yet. After seeing reports of folks having issues with 360 drives and repairs being slow. If my Hobie drive dies early I will prob go to old town or maybe look closer at a Jackson Knarr.

People thought I was crazy looking into an Old Town Sportsman PDL 106...at the time I was looking for something to fish out of...other than another canoe or ponton for these lakes that do not permit gas motors on...and I didn't want to have to pay to register a boat with an electric motor...and it had to be portable enough, but big enough to stand up in...and could slide right into the back of my F150 without the need of a tail gate extender... and it had to be light enough to car top on my Jeep Rubicon...and the Old Town Sportsman PDL 106 fit the bill for me...I've owned her for two years now...I'm glad I bought her...even over the PDL 120 size...and I love them both...smiles

Paul, that was a good review. I have had the Predator PDL 132 for a couple years now. I wish the Old Town Autopilot was in the budget! Weeds and lily pads are another negative for the pdls. It is easy to clear them, but it would be nice if there was a weed cutter feature so I didnt have to stop and pull the prop up.

One thing I do with varying success rate is pedal hard backwards when you get sense your propeller is getting caught in vegetation. I might really chug it in reverse as hard as you can for 3-4 spins. This usually clears my prop from grass/weeds without having to pick it up. Hope this helps!

The one thing the Hobie has over the bigwater 132 is the drive. The fins are shorter so you can navigate shallow waters better. I got caught out in the flats in low tide in my old town and i had to paddle 2 miles back to the launch. Either weeds clogging up drive or running aground. My friend in a hobie was able to pedal all the way back no problem.

Great comparison between two kayaks. Hobie is slow because of hull design too much water surface area contact and resistance hull. But it is the best stable hull. And has most torque than any system. I lost my hobie pa14 from fire. I still have 180 Mirage Drive and Vantage Seat. Now my problem is which Hobie kayak to get. I'm most interested in 360, but I find pa14 or 12 too heavy. Outback is all rounder and much lighter. Maybe use sidekicks for more stability. And no trailler for outback... My vantage seat for picnic..

I had a Predator PDL (I believe it is now called BigWater 132 PDL) for 3 years. I loved it but sold it for the reason it had a fixed high seat position. It was an awesome kayak in a calm condition, but it was very unstable in choppy condition. My buddies had an old Outback (about 3 yards on my left) and a PA14 (about 4 yards to my right), and we were talking and moving fast towards the beach in a choppy condition. My kayak was suddenly flipped in a surprise for all of us. I was flipped many times (on different days), but not my buddies. Well, I sold it.

106PDL is a great boat... I have one but, the Hobie mirage drive is more efficient and faster for sure. Scientifically it is the most efficient drive out, proven by force and speed testing. Now, reliability and value... The PDL has it. I still run both my Hobie and my Old town, solid yaks for sure but your gonna pay a lot more for the Hobie and get less customer support and less reliability outta it.

IMHO, the only advantage the Hobie has over the OT is the ability of the fin system which allows one to ease through weedy areas. However, it takes me a max of 15 seconds to lift the drive, clear weeds and redeploy. Again IMHO, much too much is made about the difference in the front end storage. I’ve never had a drop of water enter my hull. And when you consider the HUGE price difference, it’s a no brained for me!

Great point! We have made a lot of these videos and called it out in other ones. OT has the best warranty in the biz in our opinion. Some companies claim a good warranty, but when push comes to shove, they will not take care of you. Always look for reviews on warranty claims to see if they are legit.

for the price point. That hatch should be 100% dry. thats kinda crazy its not. or is it safe. if you flip, thats gunna flood with water and bye bye kayak.

Unsinkable design so no bye bye but if you flip the front hatch will have some water in it. Jeff and I tested haha.

@@paulglass7268 well that makes me feel better! Still shocked on the none dry hatch though. Old town is a solid name in the game. And the mini collaboration is sick. I just never knew the front hatch isn't 100% tight.

Oldtown doesn’t glide as well as hobies and the 10.6 leaks a lot of water

This is a comparison that shouldn’t have happened. Two completely different boats in regards to size. Why keep saying “ keep in mind one is 14’ and one is 10’ “ Exactly !! So why do the video ?

My husband and I both owned Hobie yaks, sold them and purchased the Old Town PDL 120. We love the PDL.. Hobie is over priced, and wasn’t for I’d..

Hobies are easier and faster to resell and keep their value. So I buy them when I see them cheap and resell them for a profit. In the meantime I use them until I sell them. Other kayaks are harder to resell. If you can't afford a new Hobie save your money and buy them used. Use them until you're ready to resell and get your money back.

A kayak is a boat by definition. Quick google will show you that the term translates to “hunters boat”. Fyi. Call it what ya want
