If I could, I’d give you a hundred “thumbs up”. People don’t realize how much natural resources it takes to build a new vehicle. I’ll stick with my 2003 Tundra with 225,000 miles for another 20 years. Yes, I’ve pulled my 4,300 pound travel trailer over 50,000 to the four corners of North America. The dash may be “dated”, but it still has a speedometer, tachometer, the four other gauges, a radio, heater, A/C and everything works. The way I look at it, I can buy a LOT of gas (or fuel in your case) for the cost of a new vehicle. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

No yearly tags in Montana if you have a vehicle older than 11 years old if you opt for permanent tags. A couple hundred up front, depending on vehicle type and then zero yearly. Two years ago, I decided to buy a truck camper. I bought an Eagle Cap 1200, I think the heaviest slide in camper made, at just south of 5,000 lbs empty, 6,500 loaded. I know some folks have put these campers on F350s and 450s, but empty they are at gross weight. I found a 1999 F550, 7.3, pickup box with 44,000 miles on it. I bought it, and I LOVE it! At 15,500 lbs, we're still 2,000 lbs UNDER gross! Ford built about 300 zillion of these trucks, commercial, utility, tow trucks, you name it, parts are a hop, skip and a jump away! And mechanics have tons of experience with them. My mechanic said Ford derated the 7.3 so it would go 500,000 miles. I'm 71. That ought to be just about right!

The only reason for getting a newer truck where I live is because I live in the rust belt and the floors and boxes and everything else on our favorite beautiful older trucks just rots away before our eyes some times before it gets paid for ! You have taken such good care of your truck you can drive it for many more years for sure . The new trucks with all their "chips" and electronic stuff are very troublesome and also just take away all the fun and enjoyment and pride of actually driving and owning a GOOD CAPABLE pickup truck that lets the driver do ALL the driving and know just what it takes to get it done !

Thanks Sean! I’d say the carbon savings of driving your “old” truck outweigh the carbon costs to build a new one!
@LongLongHoneymoon2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I suspect you are correct. I may address this issue in the future. I mean, we will probably end up buying a new truck but honestly I think the best Earth-friendly "green" strategy would be to keep using the old vehicle indefinitely...
@DavidHBurkart2 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed, continued use of old "carbon footprints" could prevent the need for creating newer carbon footprints 😂😂
@jloppyhotmail2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidHBurkart Haha! I know, and appreciate the slant on this. I think the point is that the carbon associated with manufacturing should be considered in the net carbon calculations. It’s not easy for people to grasp and there’s no clear winner. “Energy can neither be created or destroyed.” Our behaviors can directly affect clean air and greenhouse gases. Overall, I’d say the RVer is as carbon neutral as an energy conscious homeowner. Would be neat to capture some data on this.
@LongLongHoneymoon2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidHBurkart yes, this is a point I wish I’d mentioned. Driving an older vehicle is a form of “recycling” or reusing an existing resource. Just creating a new truck involves a massive carbon footprint. With electric trucks, there are issues with mining lithium, and the recharge electricity itself has to come from somewhere (coal is a popular choice!). The upshot is that driving an old existing fossil fuel vehicle may be the most “Earth friendly” strategy.

I have an 85 Chevy 4X4 which I drive to to preserve my diesel. Thanks for your little eye openers. I love the crew cab which I have. Room for passengers, and whatever you need extra room for. I had the extended cab but it felt squeezed in. Only my opinion. I also have the 6.4 which is quite, you hear that, exactly. I had the 6.9 diesel, great engine, but terribly noisy. My next truck had the bulletproof 7.3. Which I chipped and put on the engine brake. Still kick my butt for selling that. It’s really about choices and I’ve made my, some wisely, some not. I have been on the fence about upgrading my 02 F350 dually and every time one of the biggest reasons I haven't is I just can't justify paying $80K plus for a new truck. My truck, Brutus, has a half million miles on him and other than just needing some cosmetic attention will pull our 40 ft 5th wheel anywhere. I have a 45 plus year background in the auto repair business and he is mechanically perfect. I have done my share of restorations and paint work so this summer I'm going to give Brutus a new coat and drive another half million. Brutus does have a few "add on's" but the drive train is stock. I have added rear air springs for a smooth ride and I have added a guage panel that lets me monitor lift fuel pressure, boost, voltage, high pressure oil pump performance, left exhaust temp, right exhaust temp, center exhaust temp and suspension pressure. I enjoy your videos and write an amateur blog. Maybe one of ese days our paths will cross, stay safe and enjoy.

Loved the entire video! As it turns out, I do have a new (2022) Super Duty... we needed to get a vehicle that was actually built for towing our camper and unfortunately, right now the market prices are ridiculous! When we went into the dealership last year they had 1 2017 F250 on the lot for $59k... I ended up ordering a brand new one for about $2k more and 112K miles less. It was still a lot of money, but our choices were slim. It took us 4 months for the truck to get built and come in, and I gotta say, while I agree with all of your points of the benefits of having an old truck, I am really excited about my new truck! But yes, any little scratch is tearing me up right now. I totally understand that "it's a truck" but it's still not worn in yet, so I'm cringing at scratches still... I suspect that will fade in time though. Also, I went with an XLT, and agree with you about the head lights... it would have costs me $9k more just to get to those new LED headlights, and that wasn't worth it at all to me. Also, I picked up a "B" tag for mine, which was way less than if I paid for the regular plates based on Ad Valorem, but still not close to $30... lol! And it is a bit crazy at theses aluminum bodies on these "manure" trucks...lol! I did opt for power scoping mirrors, and I do like that feature, but I agree... if I have to replace even one of these things it's going to hurt. I also opted for regular running boards, which I like. Heck, the folding running boards weren't even an option on an XLT! And I did add the OEM strut to my trucks tailgate. It was an easy and inexpensive add on, and it helps my wife or daughter lower the tailgate. I ended up putting a folding tonneau cover on ours because wow, these things are just expensive! I also agree, these newer diesels are quite... that's both good and bad I guess. I do like hearing the motor rev up every once in a while, and I even like the smell of a diesel... and I agree with you about how little effect these vehicles are really having on the planet. Anyway, it's great to see you have your beloved Seemore back. Stay safe, and keep up the great videos!

I broke down last year and bought my first ever brand new truck...but I went for the old body style Frontier (2021 was the last year for the old body style, but it has the new upgraded engine and transmission) because I preferred the low-tech interior and I figured every junkyard in the country has 15 years of body parts for it, should the need arise. I do like the idea that for once in my life, I know for a fact that my vehicle is getting regular oil changes and maintenance right from day one and I'm slowly adding extras like the bed-cover and a remote starter. Trailer brake regulator is next on my list... But I did get blind-sided by the cost of tags last month. As a first time new truck owner, I had no idea I was going to pay almost $400 to RENEW the tabs. Ouch.

Just picked up an 87 f350 7.3 with banks turbo. Fixing it up and trying it out to see if it’s a better daily than my 94 f250 with the 460- a very thirsty machine

I am so glad you got your truck fixed, you made it sound like it was totaled but not so much. the tags on my 2015 RAM 3500 DRW is $27.00 here in Arkansas, I could put my Veterans tag on it for $3.00

Sean, I recently bought a 2022 Nissan Titan XD to tow my Airstream 23d. Paid about 52K for the truck (SV Crew Cab, gas burner model). I’ve made two trips thus far towing from Louisiana to Estes Park, CO and a second trip from Louisiana to Yellowstone. Just want to report that the truck tows our 23d great. No issues going up and down the mountains. Plenty of power and rock solid towing the trailer in high winds. Unfortunately, I’ve been averaging only about 10 mpg. Not great, but its also not a big 3/4 ton truck, so it might be a bit more nimble to drive daily than a 3/4 ton. Definitely bigger than a typical 1/2 ton truck. Overall, very happy with the truck, just wish it got better MPG. Good luck in your search for a new tow vehicle. Btw, sorry to hear about baby girl. I know she was a big loss for you guys. Looking forward to your future travel videos. Thank you to you both for helping my wife and I get on the road with our Airstream. Take care.

I love my 2006 F350 crew cab 4x4 long bed 6.0 L diesel and I’m never getting rid of it but eventually I’m getting another pickup that’ll be newer I haven’t decided what I’m getting but my Ford isn’t going anywhere 👍👍👍👍👍

Congratulations! Thank you. I have a 2004 Ford Excursion-Limited 4x4 6.0 Diesel (like seemore), my son understands the value of this rig but my wife and daughter tell me, "get rid of that old thing". I am planning a trip to Bullet Proof in Mesa, Az to have the engine worked on like you did with Seemore. It's been a good truck. Soon, it will be better for many more years to come.

If I pulled your size RV I would still have my '04 diesel truck. It wasn't a Ford though. My '04 trucks key could not be duplicated to start the engine. Doors open yes. My '04 did not need $14,000.00 in engine work even at 216K miles. It had $0.00 in that time frame. But I kind miss it because I did not need a step ladder to get into the cab or the bed.

My 2006 F250 4x4 Lariant Crew Cab 6.0 was $137 with specialty plate in Nevada. Never had any issues with it the truck, not bulletproofed either. Sold my F250 so I can get a 5th wheel. Needed to upgrade the truck to have higher payload capacity. Bought a 2012 Ram 3500 DRW 6.7 Laramie Longhorn $36,500 cash. Already 6 check engine codes a week after I bought it. I miss my Ford.

Not much of a traveler myself, but have LOVED the videos of ssemore's restoration, I have an 03 F250 that I gave $11,000 for in 2017 and I can tell you with confidence if someone offered to trade me even for a 2022, I'd respectfully decline. This bodystyle, Inside and out I think will always look better than the newer ones. that goes for chevy and ram alike! Keep truckin!!

Totally agree! Keep Seemore! I do have a 2017 F250 6.3 gas totally paid for. It is beautiful. But my daily driver is a 91 F150 with an inline 4.9 to run around town in. I love it and people give older vehicles wide berth. It is a hunk of steel and would fair well if we swapped paint.
