AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage - only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on KZbin are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

We sure like our Trailer Aid too. It is a life saver for changing tires. We had a slow leak on I-10, coming home from Disney World, and we had the tire changed in 15 minutes. Well with the money.

We replaced our tires at a discount tire. I had just seen a KZbin video on jacking a travel trailer. I taught the tire techs where to lift mine, and made them use blocks at the proper places. It was worth the effort. It helped that I used to own a tire shop and tipped the techs for their efforts.

Even when a shop has a sign saying no one allowed in work area I still go and watch the mechanic. After restoring cars, driving truck, heavy equipment, eventually a number of patrol cars over the past 56 years I know good basic repair practices. I'm not afraid to speak up or ask a mechanic why they're doing what they're doing. Plus I have the "gift of gab" which makes a good working relationship with the mechanic.

I empathize with big ticket repairs causing deferring maintenance expenses. Last summer we were towing into Las Vegas with 110+ degrees and the truck A/C went out. That cost $1400 to repair. During the next few days our camper A/C was having trouble keeping the camper cool in the high temperatures. I thought, It's good enough to get us home." It wasn't. In that same area on I-10 at the California Arizona border at 112 degrees the camper A/C quit. At 4:30 PM on a Saturday night we were looking at going to a hotel. But we made multiple calls and found an RV mobile tech 20 miles East of Quartzsite that said he could come to us tomorrow or if we got to his shop an hour before sunset he would fix us today. Pack up and go! He replaced our A/C in under an hour for $2300.

I had new Michelin tires mounted on our F-350 last fall by Discount Tire. During the first 5K mile rotation, the store manager noticed that three of the four tires were slightly different - I believe with respect to the weight rating. Something I likely never would've noticed, and probably something that wouldn't make a difference in our application. I was very impressed with the honesty and, as a result, will be a lifelong customer. This was a great reminder to be vigilant about monitoring tire conditions. And... Trailer-Aid ordered. Thank you!

My tire guys just called me and said my camper is ready. Just put 4 new tires on it. The tires that were on it lasted 7 years. This camper only gets moved twice a year. To our mountain lot in the spring and back home in the late fall. The tread looked great but between the tread it had a lot of cracks. They might have been ok to ride for an hour but 400 dollars is cheat insurance on a camper when tire blowout damage can cost a lot more and cost time. Great show Sean and Christy. Hope y'all have a good weekend.

My certified mechanic daughter worked in a tire shop and now manages an oil change shop (both are national franchises). After listening to her vent about how clueless the new hires are about anything mechanical (especially under age 30), I think we should all just assume they don't know and try to diplomatically clue them in on these things....or be that PITA customer, if necessary, to make them listen just to protect our property. LOL

I had e new tires installed on our 2014 Airstream FC at America’s Tire. The first thing the tech did was to put the jack u Dee the axle. I was standing there watching. I quickly told him to stop and showed him where he should jack. He tried to argue with me, but I stood my ground and he relented. No damage.

My biggest fear also is that they will jack the trailer by the axle! The last tire company said they are going to jack on the axle, told them no they will not! We got the trailer aid out and insisted this is how it will be done. We helped them thru the whole process and it went smoothly. They ended up being a believer!

First trip out on a sailboat I'd bought I noticed a single broken wire on side stay (what holds up the mast), My local rigger told me it would be at least a week to get the cable and install it. Just one wire, how much damage can that do ? The whole cable snapped, mast came across the deck. Now I have a fishing boat. Reason for posting this example, is if you see, or smell something wrong, stop, figure it out ! I've seen motorhomes pull into a campground and bursting into flames saying I smelled fuel before I got here.

From experience, the trailer ramp/ Jiffy Jacks work great on torsion axles but may not work at all on spring axles (the equalizer does it's thing and keeps the axle on the ground) or air ride axles. By all means try it with your trailer before you have a problem and go to depend on it.

Absolutely correct on this, wide stance leaf springs will not work with the trailer ramp. I have experience with this, in fact when I had my blow out I couldn’t even get my jack on the spring shackles to lift it. But I did use the ramp on the flat side to get the flat tire high enough to place the jack to remove the tire.

I'm so tired of this "professional" bull c.... I helped a friend to buy his first camper and when he went to pick it up, we where watching the service person to install and adjust the WDH and I asked the guy to do something that he was not doing, he then immediately stand up goes to service desk and got the people there to asks us to leave the bay, etc. When we arrived home I redid the instalation not only because he set up the ball angle wrong but ALL bolts were not torqued to specification.... I'm old enough now to , If I see something that is not right, just piss everybody telling them what to do and how. It is my rig and my $, period.

I downsized from a 25' trailer to a new single axle 16' trailer in spring 2020 before prices went crazy due to you know what. In 2022 I was headed to South Dakota and near the NE SD line I felt what i thought was a gust blowing on the camper. I could tell something was off and sure enough a tire was wiped out. Another gentleman stopped and helped me get it swapped out quickly. The next town big enough for a tire shop had the right size tires albeit pricey. He also was able to hammer out the small dent in the rim. I said lets replace both but leave one of the new ones on my spare carrier. Less than 200 miles and three camp spots later that spare I was running that had less than a 1000 miles on it blew out just like your tire. The little town of Midland SD had a tire shop but it was Saturday. The door was unlocked but a really big mean dog was inside. I call the number. She will be there in a couple minutes as her husband is out working in the fields. She put a new tire on and had me on my way. 11 days into that trip and gas prices approaching $5, a reefer that eventually need a new board....I headed home early.

Good points made in comments regarding tire shops. Do NOT trust them with a travel trailer. Had my tires changed at Goodyear last year and gave them the spiel about proper jack points. They then went straight to the wrong part of the frame. I stopped them, got out the Trailer Aid and forced them to do one tire at time while I backed it on and off. Another time I had an axle issue and watched the dealer, after I discussed with him, jack the camper up by the axle. He stated they do it all the time. Axle needed replacing anyway so I let it slide. But maybe, just maybe, that is how the axle was bent in the first place! As Regan said many years ago, Trust but Verify!

Excellent video. It reminds me to change the unused spare tire tucked up underneath my truck bed. The date code on it appears to be from the very early days of Goodyear tire. It has more cracks on it than windshields in Oklahoma.

Just spent over $2K to replace tires on a Dodge 3500 Mega Cab and 29' Forest River TT w/3 slide-outs. Got Tires at Sam's. They Sell TT Tires but do not install them because that has to be done outside their work bays and the AC paving might get damaged!. Adjacent to Sam's is a Goodyear Tire Store. Made arrangements to get tires and installation there. They had a AC driveway but next to their building past the work bays was a concrete slab area about 70' long that they used for truck and trailer tire change outs. When they were done the store manager took me over the the tires and pointed out the 4 Jacking points for tire work and said to be very careful that only those locations were used ! Very sorry to read about your recent problems, I have followed your website for many years.

One other thing to think about is also checking the date code of the tires before they install them…. since the calendar age of the tires is so important you don’t want to put tires on that were built 18 months ago, or a ‘set’ with significantly mismatched date codes…

On my last trip, it was replace the truck tires or the trailer tires. The truck tires were worn slap out, so the got done. As y’all, as soon as we got back, I would do the trailer. The tires were only 3 years old but were normal dummy tires. First blowout, I could only find a place with 2 of the desired 5. So I looked ahead and found 3 more 100 miles down the road. The other axle had a blowout on part of the interstate with just enough shoulder to git r dun! Rode the rest of the 60 miles left with Jesus at the wheel. Got there and shoed the rest. I will buy one of the ramps, always meant to but you know how that goes. Love your channel, long time subscriber even before I owned my first RV!! Loloho!!!

Hi guys! We did just that! Changed all tires, after only 10000 miles of difficult Alaska roads in order to come back east safe and sound! Expensive, maybe, but so much less that the hassle of having to change a tire on the side of the road! So many RV owners will run « their luck » thinking that it only happens to others….. as my accountant partner said: if we can’t be safe with tires expenses…well we shouldn’t be going that far anyway! Great reminder!

We had a blowout on our way back from Glacier NP several years ago. We made it to a tire shop in Billings Montana. Got 4 new tires and went in our way. It was at the end of the season so we winterized and put it in storage. The following Spring on our first trip we noticed dripping from under the trailer. After inspection we found the belly pan was bent and cracked. The black tank pipes were also cracked and leaking. Our Airstream was older so we had to have a new belly pan fabricated. It was a total mystery to us how the damage occurred. Now I think the mystery is solved.

Hello Kristi and Sean, my wife and I have a similar story. We were coming home with our 22 ft’ Bambi from N.Y. To N.C. And were currently in Penn. mile marker 39. When we had just pulled into a rest stop to let our Chihuahua and Jack Russell go poopy. As we were backing out and going down the ramp to this really busy Interstate we heard what sounded like a shotgun blast. Turned out our right trailer tire had blown a hole as big as my fist outward. Well, luckily we slowly backed up 25 ft. Back to our parking spot. We did not have a jack that could lift our trailer high enough to get the spare tire in the wheel well. Could not make it to a campground so we called Coach-Net for help. After waiting 4 hours and no help we were totally screwed! Then the heavens opened up and who showed up to help us was a trucker and two chinese speaking (Mechanics?). The two chinese guys had a large enough jack to lift our camper(from the Airstream lift spot- I told them where to lift it). Got the spare on and we were on our way! In thanks we had just come from Bully Hill vineyards where we had purchased 4 cases of wine. Well those guys got a free bottle of their choice along with the truck driver who also was from NC. Suffice to say when we got home we changed both tires and promised to never let them go for more than 4 years before replacing them. Also bought a hydraulic jack and I cut a wooden block that we could set the jack on that was the perfect height to change a tire. We will not be caught (Flat-footed haha) again!

I bet it was a puncture in the tread that caused your tire to lose pressure and destroy the sidewall, AKA run flat. I saw something stuck in the tread while you were rolling the tire to your tailgate at 10:04 timestamp. Driving on a tire with no air on it destroys the sidewall.

I would have done the same thing and waited on changing the tires, probably closer to 10 years if they still looked good. The blowout was likely from low air pressure due to a flat. That can happen with new tires. The tire pressure monitoring system probably would have saved you if it were working. Not throwing any stones here, I don't use one. I don't like aftermarket electronics. Way to high maintenance for me. Sorry to hear all the trouble you guys went through. Love your channel!

We pulled our 5th wheel to Seattle from central Indiana and I thought to myself "self, you should chance out those tires!" but no Bluto... they had plenty of tread. Well, on the return 90 degree temperatures, heading into the mountains, BAM a blow out. Pulled it up on my ramp, slipped on the spare, less than 15 minutes I was back on the interstate! Then less than a mile up the road, BAM another one let loose. Yea... I bought 5 new ones like I should have before I left.

It’s good to know that they did you guys right by fixing your Airstream. I use Discount tire also for all my vehicles. Our Airstream has the 3 inch lift kit, and they couldn’t reach the jacking points with their floor jack. So I use my yellow tire ramp like yours and had them change one tire at a time. By doing this I also noticed that one of the tires was different than the other three, which they quickly replaced. But we still had a tire blowout with only 2,000 miles on the new tires. As you guys did we limped into a discount tire store near by and they replaced the tire free of charge. The new tires installed were Michelin Agilis Cross Climate LT 225/75R/16, Load Range E (2523) If anyone else is having problems with these tires please comment below. As for your trip killer, as long as everyone was safe it’s always a good trip with a great story to tell. The tires (Rainier) were a brand I wasn't familiar with and I already had problems with 2 tires and one axle 3 years ago. The tires just I replaced were about 4-1/2 years old. I like Discount Tire but I've found that each locaton is different on the quality of work being performed. I've used them in Florida, and in Tennessee at 3 locatons and it depends on the manager and crew that they have doing the work. It's best to watch while the work is done if you want customer satisfaction. Also note that trailer tire valve stems are heavier duty than passenger tire valve stems.

Overall, I think they are a good company and they are doing their best, but the tire installers have very little if any experience dealing with RVs and mistakes are sometimes going to happen. Overall, you’re probably wise to either bring the wheels to them yourself, or go to a dedicated RV service center. By the way, thank you for sharing your story. It’s helpful to know that we are not the only ones.

Along with date codes and tire wear, be mindful of the speed rating your RV trailer tires can handle. I had a massive tire blowout on a camper because they had a low speed rating. For the Airstreams, if they don't have them already it might be good to have some stickers made up for the outside indicating where the jack points are.

The jack points are actually labeled from the factory. That’s what makes it even more crazy! 🤪

Sean, this was a nail-biter episode! Brought back my recessed memory for last years 10,000 mile trip and our 6+ year old Michelins having internal separation causing such intense bouncing that the refrigerator cabinet separated 90% off the wall, even causing the outside door to swing open at 70 mph and crease the outside skin. But I still have to thank you for posting your horror store(s) to help your Loloho nation to avoid some future catastrophes. Thank you both!

Also, if you are using the TireMinder model A1A, that is now out dated tech. We happened to be in FL this winter and had a sending unit fail. Called and found out we could upgrade to the new model I-10 and get $90 off if we turned in the old one. We day tripped across the state to their hq in Melbourne and took advantage of that offer. The new unit has a better antenna on the receiver so we no longer get occasional signal loss from the sending units. 😊 Kat

We have a single axel trailer. After getting a flat tire in the middle of no where, I now carry two spare tires on the camper. If for no other reason piece of mind. We've traveled a lot of gravel roads that are a lot better than the highways of the upper mid west.

Thank you for another excellent video on lessons learned! Our experience with our new (3 days of ownership) to us 2018 30’ Int’l tire replacement three days ago, started, with Discount Tire looking to jack the trailer up between the two tires, which I quickly stopped, and asked him to put a. block on his jack and use the factory jack point. His jack would not reach that high, so we went with the tire wedge and replaced them one at a time, including the spare, which was great to see a young buck laying on his back struggle with removing that spare from the cradle. Two and a half hours later we departed as happy campers! By the Way - we did not disconnect our Equalizer WD hitch, so I hope that did not cause a problem?

The problems always seem to happen in waves. We are about to spending $10,000 for some steering repairs for our 2017 F-450 and of course it's right around the time we need to put new tires on her. This video has convinced me not to put off getting those new tires (same situation - tires look fine on the rear as far as tread, but they are old).

Just ran over a drywall screw. The tire pressure stabilized at 30psi. At first, I thought I had another tire-minder battery issue. No, it was a real problem. After 3 years of chasing dead batteries in the tire sensors, it did its job.

We are heading on a 4,000 mile trip this summer in our RV. Our tires are 5 years old and still look good. I've been researching new tires for the last week or so. No way I'm driving that far on 5 year old tires, even though they look great. Plus, we always carry two spare tires with us.

Sorry you had the problem with getting your Airstream jacked up correctly. Hopefully you have or will have your trailer fixed correctly soon, which I am guessing was not an easy or inexpensive repair. When I had all four of our trailer tires replaced last year, I brought a copy of our trailer manual where it stated where to jack up the trailer, and offered the tire dealer the option of using the TrailerAide Ramp (which we use too) as an option to change the tires. Many tire shops are not familar enough with travel trailers to know the correct procedure to jack and replace tires. Glad your Tire Dealer took ownership of the their error. Thanks for reminding us of what we should do. Take care!

We told them several times that there were labeled Jack points under the trailer. I stood there and watched the guy crawl under to find it. He apparently did use the Jack points on the drivers side of the trailer, but not the passenger side. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ Next time I will just crawl under there myself to make sure they use the correct points! 😄

Trailer tires are notoriouly failure prone. You cought this tire failure before it got really messy. Over 80 degrees, over 5 years old. Not just tread depth. Feel free to sell the tires at 3 years old. Get new tires before they arent marketable.. save because you got something for your old tires. And get a tpms system that isn't going to let you down. I've been there too. I dont do that any more. The potential increase dammage and inconvience is less likley. Dammage free.! Paint factory jack points. Maybee yellow... Thanks for sharing. An employer of mine had just installed 12 recaps on a trailer in California. When in arizona had 5 tires go on the passenger side...17.5 tires. Took all day to get from multiple wharehouses.

Another great video on something that every RV owner will find out about . I was home in NY & knew I needed to change my tires ( the tread was good & I always check the pressure) but we wanted to do a short 180 mile trip for a week I said will change them when we get back . We had a blow out 30 miles from home on the way back . did some small damage & I put spare on . In 2022 I purchased a new super duty & got the factory TPMS system & there are no batteries & it comes up on your dash . I have a video about it on my channel . I highly recommend it.

We had a truck tire blowout on new Toyo tires. Our TST monitor told us about it at the exact same time the tire blew. So, just because one has new tires, there is no guarantee you won't get a blowout. In fact, it made me madder as the tires were new. and it will take about a year for Toyo to determine if we get our money back. I find if I put things off, it usually bites me in the rear!

I was careful to make sure and show the Discount Tire changer the 'Jack Points' and told him that was the only place to jack the trailer. After about two hours in the waiting area, I got a phone call and was informed they couldn't replace the tires because their jack would not go high enough to raise the tire off the ground if using the jack point. I had them put my 6 X 8-inch block of wood on top of their jack and that worked fine.

I feel your pain. I had a bulge in one of my tires, so I made a trip to my formerly favorite Discount Tire in Florida. Thankfully, I was kind of a jerk because I stood there to point out the acceptable places to jack on the frame. Their plan was to use two floor jacks and raise all four wheels off the ground together. It all came to a halt when I told the workers that they may NOT jack under the axles. The young "manager" came out to inform me that Discount Tire's corporate policy was to ONLY jack under the axles (which I don't believe.) The "Jackulators" pointed to the pan and claimed it was the frame. NO! To keep the story shorter, The manager refused to jack anywhere other than the axles and so I walked out. I even showed him the Jack points and asked, "You're telling me that corporate headquarters will not allow you to jack under the place where Airstream says, "Jack Here" !" "That's right, we only jack under the axles." and added, "I've jacked up a lot of Airstreams and never had a problem." Sure, Jr.

Was the Tire Hack video inspired by this experience? I just got done watching that one when we took our 2024 Brand New 31' motor home on it's first Test run to see the eclipse. I have an electronic tire pressure gauge and it didn't work on one set of the rear tires. It didn't really fit well. So, now I have to find a different gauge. I really appreciate your videos. Thank you both for so much. PS. I have to go back and find your video on camping apps. I had downloaded some but then got rid of them when it was obvious we wouldn't be needing them for a few more years. Times change and circumstances change, and now we will need those apps. Have a great day. I can't wait to find you on the road. Hopefully at a college football game. That series really inspired me!

A tire issue is a sure way to find yourself in Sean's situation. I just had my 5 tires replaced after 5 years of use, not because the treads looked bad but because tires on a trailer do start to wear out around that time.

So sorry this happened to you. We feel your pain. This trip we had the galley cabinet fall off in Mississippi (Airstream of DFW got Airstream Inc. to give us a courtesy warranty for that repair). We also had a reverse polarity at our "friends" house which ruined the charger (in South Carolina). All of the front 4WD seals had to be replaced because of a squealing noise in the front end (Texas) of our truck. Lastly, our refrigerator developed an ammonia leak and it had to be replaced (Arizona). Glad you made it home safely and good luck with your repairs.

I put Goodyear Endurance tires on our fifth wheel. At 5 yrs of age, I went to replace them proactively so I could move those older tires to a smaller rig. I found one had a belt failure separation and since another had a flat spot, I didn’t reuse them. So even Endurance tires have an age limit. Fortunately I found it during time at home. It looks like your failure was not in the steel belt but at the sidewall, which is why it so little damage ( no flapping tire tread/ belts). “ Lucky you”. The point is, these are all internal failure origins, so keeping them clean, Armor All, out of the sun, no tread wear, etc are all ineffective at preventing internal failure. It’s NOT how a tire looks.

This episode is just as important as any other especially when it comes to safety. I know what I'm about to say may ruffle a few feathers but I'm going to say it anyways, Michelin LT tires are not even in the running for the best LT tires. Michelin tires have a history of various failures and for LT tires to fail in this way is not uncommon. You just don't see this frequency with the top rated brands but people will swear by them. The trailer ramp is an excellent product to have in your emergency kit. Even when you guys have an emergency, you manage to make me smile and laugh. I wonderful channel which I have enjoyed for years. Happy and safe travels to you both!
