When you see the people watching this performance and see the tears coming from their eyes and their hands raised, this looks like a worship service. The choir is singing in English, I wonder if anyone understands what is being said?

Ah, people DON'T have to fight.... And some won't. The more that join them; they better we'll all be. The proof is right in this vid, that you can put a uniform on a person, but you can't force what's in their heart. You can only try to manipulate it with propaganda. Even in the Cold War, I refused to believe the Russians were our enemy. They weren't, and they aren't now. Only propaganda and Liars are our enemy. We love Russians, and they love us, too. The secret truth is, we all actually really enjoy each other's company, and a few political Liars try to make people fear and hate each other. Love is a way more joyous way to live...let no one snatch the reom you ever. I refuse to fear or hate anyone.

The song was written in the Union Army camp during the Civil War. Some things are worth fighting for. Abraham Lincoln, from his Second Inaugural Address: "Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said 'the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.'"

Classic. This is the Peter Wilhousky arrangement. He was a famous Ukrainian-American so maybe that is why the Party handlers let this go by. I be interested to know more about this performance. The parts for women are being sung by men. Balalaikas are being used instead of Viols. But everything else is pretty much as Wilhousky wrote it.

It's what Wilhousky actually wanted! These guys sing it better than all American choirs I have heard.... from the military to the amateurs.... The Russians do know this music well!

They already were Christians. Russia's loaded with Christians. But they do a beautiful job, their choir is awesome, and always has been, even in the Cold War when it was much harder to know of them. Since they were seen worldwide, if they did convert people, it would have not been country-specific.

The Red Army Choir was famous for being deployed to war fronts as part of Hearts and minds effort and would sing local songs. They tured the USA a number of times and this, along with America the Beautiful would be sung. Just so folk like you would think ... oh, I thought communist could not sing such songs. See it works.
