I'm really sick of people calling the old Cinderella "weak". Ok, maybe she was a little passive, but like Doug said, she showed anger, concern, and actually felt like a genuine human being.

Honestly, a person who's lived in abusive home won't exactly be the most assertive person in the house. Cinderella is fine because while that's not all women, only some are like that.

+Trophies Well, I'm not gonna say that the original Cinderella was "weak". However, that doesn't excuse the fact that in my opinion...she's kind of an idiot in the original version. Now, the newer version, while she's not as "strong" as people say she is...I guess you could say that she had somewhat of 2nd Dimensional personality. Just not too much. However, I will credit the newer version for giving the prince more screen-time in the movie. So, that's just me. But yeah...Ever After is the better Cinderella movie than both Disney versions. Hell, it's even better than Cinderella III, in my opinion.

Cinderella is so important to me. As someone who grew up with an abusive parent and step parent (luckily I also grew up with an Amazing parent and step parent on the other side) I could look at someone who never let the cruelty of others affect her own personality. She never let a cruel world make her cruel. There was no way out of her situation, so instead she made the best out of it and remained a caring person.

You are a strong person, I congratulate you for staying strong against those who abused you, and I am glad you had other loving parents in your life. It kills me when people, especially nowadays, say that the original Cinderella is just about a girl wishing for and finding her prince, when they couldn't be more wrong. I think you summed it up perfectly, staying strong, kind, and caring in a cruel world and hoping for things to get better, especially when you can't do anything about it for at least a while, is the real message of the original classic. Again, *NOT* her wishing for and finding her prince.

I was in the same situation as a child, and when I got older I took revenge in the most sadistic and mechiavelic way possible, and that act tortured me from the inside more than the vhild abuse itself. However I have a wonderful family to take care of and to take care of me.

To be honest, I feel like the romance between the prince and Cinderella wasn't as important to the story. Yes, it was a nice bonus for her, but I feel like the story is more about a girl finding her freedom than finding romance.

By giving Cinderella friends, especially ones who are aware of the abuse she's being subjected, this makes SO MANY NEW problems; it raises a lot of questions like: "Why don't her friends help her?", "Why doesn't she go live with THEM?", "Why do none of them tell the prince so HE can help by demanding the family treat her better?", "Why doesn't she take her friends' advice to protect herself because obviously her parents wouldn't want her to be abused?!!" It's so bad in execution.
@monsterhanna6691

And yet the stepmother still didn't want the duke, someone of AUTHORITY to find Cinderella. Also, wouldn't Cinderella be punished even more of she tried to escape? Think about it; if she left and never came back, wouldn't they go after and possibly abuse her even more? Hence why her going to the ball AND marrying the prince was such a big deal for her? Just like the original Cinderella, she's trying to make the most of the situation and the remake Cinderella could possibly be going through depression, hence why she's trying to stay cheerful and had TWO mental breakdowns.

I liked how leaning more on history solves Ever After's problem of Cinderella being strong enough to leave the house but not being able to. At that point in history, things like domestic abuse were considered family business and the law didn't interfere. Women legally weren't allowed to leave their families until they were married unless they joined a convent. It was perfectly legal for the stepmother to treat Cinderella any way she wanted, including making her a slave. And no matter how much Cinderella went out to the town, helped with servants outside the home, or how smart she was, she wouldn't have freedom until she married. (Yes, sexist and cliche, but that was the law of the land). The Cinderella remake is placed more in a generic fantasy time period, so it can't use this excuse.
@astoriaanne
@astoriaanne 6 жыл бұрын
Psyche's Rose, they could still use that excuse, that she had no choice, but they were not smart enough, to use it. Even in the 1800’s, Cinderella would still, have that same problem. The workhouses, even if they had them, where she lived, you wouldn’t want to live there, unless you were close to staving to death.

One thing I like about Old vs. New over most other comparison shows on the internet is that you guys actually come to a conclusion! So many other shows just bullshit it and leave it as a tie (Matpat's former show Deadlock for example) and then tell the audience "You guys make the decision in the comments!" as a stupid way to avoid pissing people off. I don't watch a 15 minute video just to have it be null and only ask for my opinion! I want to hear the opinion of the video creator! Both ways spark discussion in the comments but the way you guys do it just seems much less contrived and ironically makes you seem more involved than the guys who blatantly ask the comment section to decide. So thanks for that!

JK- 27 Note I never said Matpat sucks. I said his show Deadlock was not very good in my opinion. It had the potential to be really good, all he would have to do is come to an actual conclusion after all the points had been made instead of just "Okay arbitrarily we've reached a tie. Comment below to decide who wins!". Just made the whole thing predictable and formulaic instead of actually conveying anyone's overall opinions. Matpat is indeed great. Deadlock wasn't.

0deadx21 If you want to know why I think the animated one is interesting or at least better than the live action one, then just watch Nostalgia Critic explain at the end. But in short I'd rather a character with too many flaws than one without any. The one with flaws is always much more entertaining to watch.
@CindyBob666
@CindyBob666 7 жыл бұрын
0deadx21 The old Cinderella never actually "just sat around and waited for things to be handed to her". She chose to get up and go to the ball against her step mothers wishes, she chose to dance with the prince because that was what she wanted to do, when her step mother tried to stop her, she found a way to get out of the room she was locked in by fighting back. She lived her whole life working for her step mother rather than just giving up. She's not perfect but she's not the helpless damsel everyone tries to portray her as. And she clearly cares about a lot. She cared about going to the ball, she cared about meeting her prince again after they danced, she cares about her animal friends. She even cares about the hard work she does at home - aka when she got angry when the cat messed up her clean floor or when she cried over her ruined dress. I swear it's like you've never even seen the animated version. You're just saying stuff you've heard other people say which is all just bs. Again: Watch the Nostalgia review on Cinderella. He explains exactly why we prefer the animated version. And even if you don't agree, there's no need to get so worked up and start swearing. Seriously, calm down. There's being passionate about something and then there's overreacting to it.

0deadx21 1: Parents who died when she was a little girl and whom she probably can't remember very well, if at all, 2: A house that she is basically a slave in, 3: Step family that treats her like complete shit. Just because she doesn't care about the stuff YOU would, doesn't mean she doesn't care and just because you disagree with the things she cares about, doesn't mean she doesn't care about them. AKA, she cares about things. Obviously this Cinderella isn't perfect. It's a pretty old film so it's going to have its flaws but even they work. She's emotionally because she's psychologically abused so if she breaks down into tears for seemingly no reason, that just adds to how interesting she is as a character. And can you seriously answer me. Have you watched this video? Have you seen Nostalgia Critic's review? Because as he said: The new Cinderella has two major breaks down but otherwise just smiles and looks like a zombie throughout most of it. I mean that scene where's she's locked up. At least the other Cinderella gave a shit and tried to get out. The live action one doesn't do anything (again, as Nostalgia Critic points out).

I did, first time years and years ago in middle school. It's really very old in its direction, but there's still this classical enchanting aspect and a bit of the atmosphere that Disney reproduced for Belle's first night at the castle. Now the 2014 film on the other hand, like the best visuals I've ever seen for a French movie, but it lacks sooo much of chemistry between the titular characters and I hate Léa Seydoux (Belle)'s acting. And the story, while creative, is not that really good either. But again, it's still beautiful to watch.

About the Cinderella character part: THANK F**** YOU! God, I disliked this remade Cinderella! Specially the "smiling like a zombie part". I suspect this was a decision from the director rather than from the actress, though, considering the other actors go for a similar tone. I mean, when Cate Blanchet tries to do an evil smile, it's so so over the top I can't take it seriously. She was more cartoony than the actual cartoon! And Blanchet is one hell of an actress who can do way better than that! As far as I'm concerned, the only point where the remake truly wins is in the prince. I don't care if the supporting characters hijack the movie, the animated version wins in EVERYTHING else. I haven't seen "Ever After" yet, though. I'll have to give it a go.

+XanderVJ Honestly even the original Prince wins. The Prince was an empty sheet of paper which you can paint or draw to your liking. This IS a story for lil girls. The Prince is more like something for girls to dream or imagine up for themselves on how he's like. Thats the same with videogames that have silent protagonists. The first that comes to mind is Red from Pokemon,he doesnt speak but he's there doing what the player tells him. People just imagined what is he like. They imagined a silent and stoic badass because thats what they wanted to be. Same with the Prince. The animated one gave you bare bones,which is beauty,even the Critic agrees with how he looks and that one yawn was gorgeous. You basically had to imagine your own Prince in the animated like in the original story. In the remake,the prince is just some rich prick who's not my type and i dont care about him.

Oh sweet sweet sanity at 17:56 I wondered over the same thing. I've told people over and over again that you could replace the new Cinderella's lines with 'Have courage and be kind' with different intations of her voice and it'll still make sense. That's all it was about having courage and being kind and honoring her father's home which she abandoned at the end. Someone tells me that in the novelization they used it as a summer home but that's in a separate medium. I've actually gotten into an argument with my boyfriend over how somehow with as little as she does the animated Cinderella had more personality even though the live action was more educated and active. Animated begrudgingly served because she had no choice and nowhere to go. Live action chose to stay and grin and bear it even though she could have left as the friend had mentioned suitable work for her. But no we're suppose to think she's brave for this. How many people in an emotionally abusive relationship did that just fuck up? The only thing I really did like about it was the motivation that it gave to the stepmother although even with her they screwed up because it's hard to figure out if they want you to be sympathetic to her or hate her. She's basically what happens to dreamers when their happily ever after dies too soon and she has to manage on her own so there's no room to have courage and be kind, she has to stay above water and marry off two 'stupid' and 'talentless' daughters. Cindy has smarts and talent she doesn't have to worry even if the prince never was in the picture...if she bothered to leave the damn place behind. But no sadly she isn't held captive by her stepmother as was done in the animated version, she's held captive by the words of her beloved parents. After you stop being dazzled by the vibrant set and costumes you see how flawed the live action is. One person tried to convince me that it was good if we saw it as a story about woman maintaining her compassion regardless of the emotional abuse she suffers from her stepfamily, repeating the words of her dying mother and living by them but taking it too far (yeah that was bullshit granted she still quoted and lived by it in the end) or not really understanding it but finally standing up for herself in the end. Again bullshit because she wasn't even standing up for herself, she was standing up for the prince. Really it could have been a good plot point but they didn't even mean to do that. One person made the perfect comment on how this Cinderella lacks so much agency that she can't even open a window. Yeah it's a nod to how the animals freed her to help her get her HEA but that was something she could have done herself.

BoMah:) Thanks. I remember when I left after seeing the movie with my mother. She went on about how beautiful her dress was, as well as how nice everything looked. Then asked me what I thought, I had this moment of 'Crap I'm about to ruin this for her.' I hadn't refined my response to what I said above but basically said that it looked nice but she did nothing, she brought nothing to the story, they made the prince more interesting than her, the rats were for the most part pointless, and somehow they took some of the good parts of Ever After and made it horribly dull, the Fairy God Mother was channeling Jack Sparrow so hard I thought HBC was drunk
@LadyBern
@LadyBern 8 жыл бұрын
BoMah:) Very true. And oh you made me remember the part I hated the most and that was the whole dress before the ball scene. I had to bite my tongue at the line she gave to the god mother about wanting to wear her mother's gown to the ball. Honoring your mother and father doesn't have to be all that you're about and sadly that was all that she was about. She was the living embodiment of the 5th commandment. At least in the cartoon there was absolutely no way she could have gone to the ball. In this one two small tears that she could have easily pinned that up and gone with it, even the time that she spent crying she could have sewn it together, got on her horse and rode close enough to the palace to walk the rest of the way and still be on time (I know that's not how the story goes but that's how minimal the tearing of her gown was), if her stepfamily was actually willing to wait she could have ran upstairs grabbed a needle and thread then patched it up in the carriage ride to the palace. It's as asinine as those movies where a woman's whole day is ruined because someone threw all of 2 oz of water in her face that could have been wiped off with a napkin.

Disagree on Prince Philip. Of the old classic Disney movies (pre-Little Mermaid), Philip actually did have a personality. He was surprisingly funny, and had more than one funny moment in the movie. He gets thrown off his horse while racing dramatically for the princess and gets dumped in the water, then says, "No more carrots" to his horse and in a grumpy/playful sort of way splashes water at him. His coat and hat get stolen by woodland animals, but he just sort of roles with it and ends up dancing in the woods (not his average day probably), and when he returns to his father who's all befuddled over him marrying a peasant, he just says, "You're living in the past, father. This is the fourteenth century!" which is a pretty funny line, and it's pretty telling about how he thinks about life in general. He's a progressive thinker, adventurous and laid back, confident enough to stand up to his father, bold enough to go after what he wants despite political backlash, and he's brave enough to fight a frickin' dragon. That's more than Prince Charming did. Literally the most memorable thing about Prince Charming is that he yawns and has a probable foot fetish. And I can't even remember the name of Snow White's prince. Did he even have a name?

This whole video I was wondering why they weren't discussing Ever After - one of the few good things Drew Barrymore has done. There is a flaw. Just before she fights Cinderella declares that her father had taught her sword fighting and she hadn't forgotten a thing. He died when she was about 8, so she couldn't have been that great, and she hadn't had time to practice in at least ten years. How good could she be? On the other hand, the stepsisters were great in Ever After. One of them was even kind of nice and had a happy ending. Also, she knocks the prince off a horse with an apple. That's just kind of cool.

@unfabgirl I read that book, and it was actually great giving us more backstory. However, despite how the novel said she was bluffing, I still wouldn't be surprised if Danielle actually knew how to use a sword pretty well. She might have practiced in any spare time she had when not doing chores, but who knows? 🤷‍♀️

For me the most enerving thing about the new one was that Cindy doesn't try to ask for help when she is locked in the atic. For all she knows, the stepmother could starve her to death and nobody would know. She hears the horses and looks away!!!! All she has to do is opening the window and ask for help! Even if she wasn't the prince's sweetheart they would've done something for her.

I have yet to see the new one, (can't find a working torrent/stream online) so I have no actual opinion on the 2015 film, as a whole. I just hate when people shit all over Ilene Woods' portrayal of Cindy, simple because she isn't their definition of strong. Not every female role model has to be some shrieking harpy bitch, with an attitude problem. Also glad Ever After was brought up. It's the only other Cinderella film I love equally as much as the 1950 version.

There's this thing called a fire stick for your tv. You plug it in and it gives you access to all these movies and shows and shit. The thing is like 100 dollars, but it's a good investment. Only downside is that there is very little... Organization. Sure there is year by year, a-z and such, but there is a chaos in sifting through everything and finding a working or compatible link. Each movie/show is connected to links of varying quality and multiple sites that have multiple links. I like using it. I actually was able to watch Zootopia before the movie premiere in theaters. It's also not illegal. I don't know how, but somehow it's not illegal.

Glad that I am not the only one who loves "Ever After." Watched it so many times with my mom growing up. As much as I love the original Cinderella, I always felt that the most important take away from the movie was no matter how old you get, it's okay to have dreams for the future. As for Ever After, Danielle is kind, witty and fierce. Hell, she beat the prince up by accident when she thought he was a horse thief. She can stick up for herself. Plus, I felt her and the prince had more chemistry as the movie goes on.

Ella Enchanted the movie or the book? Because I 200% agree about the book, but the movie..... I honestly think it gets beat out pretty well by the Hillary Duff modern day version (which I weirdly like quite a lot). I mean, I enjoyed Ella Enchanted the movie, but it was just way too goofy to take seriously, particularly when the book is so much more nuanced and has such cool world-building, not to mention the fact that Ella and the prince spend ages getting to know each other and don't have the stupid start out hating each other thing.

There are a bunch of versions of Cinderella in theatre, film, written story, ballet, and even opera. Thank you for not forgetting the true superior movie....Ever After. I always thought the new Cinderella was just toxic positivity in human form, and the complete opposite of what we are being told. Everyone says she's the strong, independent one but that is literally not what is being shown. Either half the world is lying to everyone or they really think this is what a strong main character is, which is actually pretty scary if they think a warrior princess just sits in a tower waiting to be rescued. The original was kinda hosed by the time she was in but she still had emotions other than "smiling through the pain like a psycho" She literally coordinated an escape while the other one just literally sat around and accepted her fate. As far as the whole "she could just leave" thing that people harp on for both movies, this is actually a very realistic response to being abused. Whether their confidence is shattered, they're brainwashed, or there is a legit threat of violence, this is actually the most realistic part of the movie and it's not even trying to be. Where was she going to go? She has no money because her stepmother probably seized it all when her father died, she would have to volunteer herself as a servant which wasn't better than what she was dealing with anyways and pray that she could find a noble house with a job opening! Call it thinking too much but I think the rest of you are making the mistake of not thinking enough! Because everything people are complaining about except for the damsel in distress bullshit has a logical explanation. and for that to happen in a fairytale, that's a miracle.

I think because technically it's considered Broadway show and a TV movie not a theatrical released film. The Rogers and Hammerstein play has been show on TV many times with different casts. My first introduction to it was a 1965 VHS version with Ginger Rogers and Pat Carroll (fame for Disney villain Ursula) Though kinda campy it's my favorite version. As for me I never much cared for Brandy's vocal performance in the play which surprises me as she was at the time a very popular singer. To me she sounded like she had a cold. It could be because I saw the 1965 version first. Every thing else in that version was good, at least what I can remember.

I agree. Ever After Is the better Cinderella movie. But if we're talking about a movie that's still a Cinderella story without focusing solely on "Cinderella", I like Confessions of an Ugly Step Sister. Like Maleficent, it gives us a chance to see the story from the perspective of someone whose suppose to be the villain. I like stories like this because it teaches us that there are two sides to everything. Neither of which are absolute truth. It all depends on your point of view.

Draw Enidan People aren't evil just for the sake of being evil. I don't believe that. There's light and dark aspects to all of us. Ying and yang. Even the greatest villain is capable of doing good. +Sehena Falconi While I understand the idea of deep villain I think a lot of the villain POV stories, Maleficent included, end up going too far the other way. It's one thing to add complexity to your villain, I'm all for that, but the result should be someone like the Shadow Man from Princess And The Frog, a guy with understandable motivations and sympathetic qualities but not with the villainy removed entirely. Maleficent basically recasts her as the hero, changing the other characters into villains or idiots to justify her actions. That's not adding complexity to the tale so much as moving it around.
