A friendly fan debate with film critic Carsten Knox about the different eras of the James Bond franchise. Some questions that we're exploring are: What era is better? How has the Bond franchise changed? Is Bond still culturally relevant?

Its always interesting to see how the phases of Bond are broken down. I see 1962 - 1969 (Connery & Lazenby) as the Golden Era. 1973 - 1989 (Moore & Dalton) as the Silver era. 1995 - 2002 (Brosnan) as the Modern Era Phase 1. 2006 - 2021 (Craig) as the Modern era Phase 2. However, I can see how one can merge both Brosnan and Craig as both the Modern era. I just feel the styles are so different, that they need to be split up.

absolutely!! - In my own mind i tend to break them up further - 60s - classic. Diamonds, Live and Let Die, Man with Golden Gun is the Guy Hamilton/Tom Mankiewicz trilogy (and they do feel of a piece to me), Spy who loved me and Moonraker are the bombastic Lewis Gilbert two-some. The 80s - Bond comes back to earth to be directed by John Glen. Brosnan 4 and Craig 5

What makes a person debonair?? Knowing instantly that his dinner jacket is tailor made??Having caviar and toast points for dinner??Knowing how to sail a large yacht??

Great discussion. Nothing I like more than when aficionados don’t bend over backwards to agree with each other. That’s the difference between being a critic and being a fanboi.

For me, Goldfinger is the best Bond movie! Great Stuff. My second favorite is Live and Let Die! I guess also, since Jaws is my favorite Bond villain of time, I'll pick the Spy Who Loved me and Moonraker.

I thought ALL the Easter eggs in the reboots were fantastic. Never mind the obvious ones like the DB5. Things like the lablemaker tape used to identify the weapons in the new car. Connery mocking the Beatles in Goldfinger and then Miss Strawberry Fields ending up covered in oil like Jill Masterson's body being painted in gold. The gun and radio that Q presents to Bond. Q's cat

The only problem I had with Casino Royale starring Daniel Craig was the need for Bond to explain Texas Holdem strategy and bluffing to Vesper

Apart from the family link and some other small things the Daniel Craig 007 films have been a good run. I would have liked him to make some more but he's gone now.

Honestly, I've become disillusioned for it used to be entertainment and escapism, now it's all modern agenda driven and supposedly more true to life. It is still as far from reality but I always loved seeing Bond as in control, capable and none of this "flawed personality" nonsense when the likes of Moore was at the helm. Brosnan wasn't bad, but some of the more outlandish "gadgets" made it like a comic book than a Bond movie, but that was nothing to do with him. Bring back the Bond of old who done it all, beat the bad guys, made us cheer along with a funny quip and leave this deep soul searching, moody and flawed investigation of his personality in the bin..

Yeah, i very much agree. i tend to think the operative word is fun! There are thrills in the modern Bonds to be sure, but I think there's a dearth of fun. Exceptions might be some of Skyfall - Bardem's portrayal of Silva was Fun! Silva's raid on Skyfall with the Animal's "Boom Boom" blasting out of the helicopter's speakers was . . . fun! Maybe it's too much of the Jason Bourne influence showing, i dunno.

I have to agree, Golden era Bond 62-89 is the best era of the films. Modern era Bond was peppered with decent films but largely lacking in the fun escapism or verging on ridiculous( Brosnan last two). I too have never followed popular opinion, as some of my favorites are generally regarded as weaker entries as my favorite was always A View to a kill. Old Bond is Bond, New Bond (Craig) is a woke checking the boxes character. It was ever present in NTTD, With the exception of Skyfall, the real last formulaic film was TND. Here's my ranking 26. Never say never again 25. Die another Day 24. The world is not enough 23. Spectre 22. No time to die 21. Thunderball 20. From Russia with Love 19.You only Live twice 18 Dr. No 17. Casino Royale 16. Quantum of solace 15. Goldeneye 14. Moonraker 13. Diamonds are forever 12. TMWTGG 11. Live and Let die 10. Skyfall 9. The Living Daylights 8. Tomorrow never dies 7. Octopussy 6. Goldfinger 5. OHMSS 4. TSWLM 3. Licence to kill 2. For your eyes only 1. A View to a kill

It is all because of the new generations of directors. Everyone of them comes to try someting new and make to himself new line of bond but at the end. the classy characher has been gone. and at the end he's dead !!!!
