Old Yu-Gi-Oh Cards That Aged A Little TOO Well

What do you guys think about old cards that suddenly end up being surprisingly powerful? I don't think they're necessarily a bad thing (I've been a Super Polymerization enjoyer for years), but I just wanted to draw some attention to a few notable examples. I've noticed most of these cards end up being ones that are preventative or defensive in nature, as well.

I like it to be honest. Only because I hate seeing same decks everywhere so a few floods to steal games because it's in the rouge strategy and not a tier 0/1 so roughest better prepared for everything and tops are just ready to combo... plus give me a chance to use traps

-With "Super Polymerization", they are just upset none of their metas are safe. -For "Rival of Warlords", people don't like it when they are stopped from splicing 4+ engines to turn out powerful generic Extra Deck Monsters. -Hand traps I think are fine overall, just hate how people will abuse them. like 25-50% negates and the rest engine for Extra Deck. -"Armageddon Knight" is fine at 2 I think, maybe 3 depending if they make more acceptable answers. -"Instant Fusion" is fine. I'd say all fusion cards are fine if they would make them like "Branded Fusion". Like how the only way to get anything other than the "Branded" fusions is to literally use the "Branded" fusion and core monster.

The lack of rotations in Yu-Gi-Oh, outside of the Forbidden and Limited list, means that any card theoretically could become really powerful because they could cause interactions that were not possible during its inception. If we look at cards like “Mind Control” for instance, it was fine because there was no real way to take advantage of it. As soon as the Synchro mechanic came around, it became really busted because suddenly players could convert the stolen monster into something they could use, i.e. Synchro material. For this reason, I see reverse power-creep as a feature that is more prominent in Yu-Gi-Oh than any other card game.

That's also a perfect reason why cards that are too broad in their design, like Predaplant Verte Anaconda, will always stunt game design as long as they're legal. Given that it searches *any* card with 'Fusion' or 'Polymerization' in its name, as long as Verte is legal, Konami will always have to keep Verte in mind when printing powerful new Fusion spells. Just look at the last few months of Master Duel, before Branded Despia took over, where almost any deck that could make and use Verte also ran a DPE package.

There's been endless discourse about Mystic Mine for months now and the only answer I ever see for why it should be banned is its unfun and meta can't do anything to it because they want to run 15 hand traps instead of any other removal. Its frustrating seeing a card being good as a ban reason instead of the actual criteria on what is needed for being bannable

I like Super Poly, yes it's strong, but you have to invest a few extra deck slots for it and I only use it in decks that already want to fusion summon. Also it's way less reliable if you use Pot of Extravagence/Prosperity. There are a lot of things you can use your extra deck for and Super Poly is just one of the options and not always the best.

anime yugioh is all about beat downs that have upon destruction effects to keep the flow going. Everything pretty much needs to hit the field, and then once in the gy you can start combos. They almost never just search out everything or play 10+ cards in a turn I -half- jokingly say that sky strikers is the way the game was intended to be played. It very much was designed to have that back and forth game state.

Ancient Fairy Dragon comes to mind. When compared to the other Signer Dragons it was nowhere nearly as good as Stardust or Black Rose at release. Yet, it's still to this day the only one that got banned.

In the modern meta of insane first turn boards, I'm glad all these board breakers are finding a way back in. Honestly, it's great to help diversify deck building, not only in terms of not running variations of ash blossom, but also in terms of what going second is capable of doing.

To put Maxx C in perspective: at the time of its release, Pot of Duality was a staple. That should severely put into perspective how cutting off your SS for a turn wasn't a death sentence.

Even years later in HAT Format, losing one turn hurt, but it wasn't a death sentence. Some decks even didn't care about the card, like Geargia. Maxx "C" was more of a way to slow down combo decks back then, rather than kill them outright the following turn. I miss those days for sure and it's why I play HAT format instead of modern yugioh.

Fun fact: Dark Hole was a card first released in the first ever Yugioh set in 1999. While it is not as good as it maybe was in TCG, Master Duel has still shown its power in a best of one. I definitely include a copy in my decks at least. The ability to use up some of your opponents negates or even potentially board wipe them, is still useful even all these years later.

Super Polymerization - It has always been good. I am surprised no one has ever tried the secret effect that Jaden Yuki did where he fused himself with his opponent. Rivalry of Warlords - What boosted it's power is S/T destruction has shifted from spell and trap cards to monster effects, and you can't even play those monsters if you're off type these days if this has resolved. Droll and Lock Bird - I play my fair share of Traditional and Unlimited. I learned from those formats that card is meta dependent. And the more Meta searching/drawing gets, the better Droll will continue to get. Armageddon Knight - This card has always been amazing. It immediately became a starter in Tele-DAD, and even after that era, the floor has always been send Destiny Hero Malicious or (at the time) Plaguespreader Zombie. Other cards that have power scaled over time, even sooner than these cards: Upstart Goblin, Solemn Judgement. Those cards were realized to be good a lot sooner than the cards in this video, but it still took time for players to realize the only life point that mattered (on either side) was the last one.

Personally I support cards like Super Poly in this meta game of super negates and control boards. I don't feel its any better than Dark Ruler No Mores, Forbidden Droplets or other cards that help shutting down ( or slowing down) a board that's gonna prevent you from playing.

Depends on the situation. Dark Ruler can always be used and has no discard cost. Super Poly gets you a monster using your opponent's monsters, while clearing their board, so you can potentially OTK them. Super Poly's power changes depending on the fusion monsters available. Before Mudragon and Garura it wasn't as strong.

I really like super poli as a removal tool, at least it costs you both deck and extra deck slots to run but I don't like the new bird, that requirement is too easy to achieve, I would rather we get generic options for each type, similar to the starving venom or predaplant options, so at least there would be more of a cost

I believe it illustrates how the game design has changed over time. For Super Poly, fusion monsters used to always have specific requirements but now it's rare to have a fusion monster that doesn't have at least one generic requirement. I believe that this change was brought about to help fusions keep up with the generi-fication of extra deck monsters, and as a result Super Poly became much more powerful than it's designer thought it could be. Similarly, when Maxx C was introduced, special summoning was either for extra deck boss monsters or part of a deck's gimmick.

For reference on Maxx C, it wasn't a maindeck staple even during fairly large parts of the pendulum era. Maxx C being an incredibly broken card is a *very* recent development entirely due to the way modern decks work

This is kinda how I feel about broken Extra Deck monsters like True King of All Calamities or Rhongomyniad or Herald of Ultimateness. Obviously their effects are completely bonkers and should've never been printed, but they were clearly meant to be balanced around being super difficult to bring out, so if you could manage to put in the resources to get it out you were supposed to be able to easily win. However, Konami later started releasing engines that could turbo them out easily (in those cases, Virtual World, Bamboozling Gossip Shadow, and Drytron), and that's when they started becoming huge problems.

My personal favorite boss monster horus lv8 actually aged better though not consistently still. With decks relying on spells so much and banning of imperial order he's actually hard for a lot of decks to out. The only thing holding him back was reliably summoning him. Which dragunity and hieratic can do with great ease. They just have to hard draw the level up. But you can make strong boards with level 8 on field and that wins you a lot of decks more than ever before.

Forbidden Chalice is a very good low rarity option in Master Duel and being a Quick Play Spell in general can in some instances prove more useful than Infinite Impermanence and Effect Veiler which are supposed to be power crept versions of it.

Neo-Spacian Aqua Dolphin is an easy one due to increase in amount of monster hand traps making its effect more worth the cost and the knowledge gained becomes more worth it due to cards like Nibiru were knowing if it's in opponents hand can determine your plays, while opponents hand knowledge always being good meant its effect was better than any of its evolutions it got way stronger. Other Jaden/HERO aligned cards also got stronger as improvements to fusion in general feed back into them being a test ground for the mechanic alongside support, miracle fusion having more and better targets and a hero lives getting more than just Stratos to pull out.

It's funny that as an old time player I REALLY enjoy Maxx C in Master Duel, because in effect it forces both me and my opponent to either play like I used to (Normal Summon and maybe Special Summon once, then end turn) or there's the challenge of winning there and then, before the other can respond with that myriad of cards now in the hand. I like Maxx C, because it gives me the agency to decide how to play afterwards unlike Ash Blossom which can nearly negate every important function. One card that became completely broken is "Last Will". Sure, summoning out a low ATK monster for free was never bad, but back then the way to trigger it was to Tribute Summon a card you Normal Summoned the turn before, which is definitively not overpowered.

Last Will has pretty much always been broken and it'll continue to get more and more broken over time I'd imagine. It facilitated Magical Scientist FTK which I believe sealed its fate.

Honestly the floodgate point makes sense, as alot of floodgates are actually pretty old, I have a copy of Rivalry of Warlords I've had since like 2005. There are a lot of these like Gravity Bind, Imperial Order, etc.

Solemn Judgment got use and it still sometimes pops up because it's just inherently broken and can fill a spot in certain decks that are weak to back-row.

I have to mention 2 cards Neo Space connector and Aqua Dolphin. While it is because of Aqua dolphin effect that mainly forces the opponent hand I feel both should be mentioned. Before the age of at minimum 9-15 hand traps per deck and the age of links. I feel as though it only use was for hand knowledge but now it's far more. They are not super broken but I feel they aged well and can come in as life savers more now because: 1)Again hand knowledge being very important. Aqua dolphin allows us access to this. See what strategy the opponent may be playing so we can side in appropriately even if they give up without ever playing a card. 2) these 2 together could also force your opponent to use a hand trap if one is applicable 3) if possible rip at least 1 card away from opponent and at same time inflicting 500 points of damage. Worst is you rip no cards lose 500 lp, but again you still gain hand knowledge 4) it leads to instant link 2 if neo space is allowed to special summon aqua dolphin

Rivalry of Warlords is really the perfect example. At the time, decks were composed of 99% “goodstuff” piles. Type specific support was rare and lackluster, so Rivalry was meant to give you a benefit to running one type exclusively. Warrior/fiend/spell caster decks in 2003 weren’t accomplishing much of anything and desperately needed a way to slow the opponent down to their pace. Now TWO DECADES later the card is just thrown into decks that are already sticking to one type anyway, and there is effectively no downside to the card; it’s just an auto-win button for certain decks in certain matchups

I'd be interested to see them add limits to certain cards when you have another card in the deck or you can't play it in the same deck. It would mean more cards that are banned due to being broken because of an interaction with 1 or 2 specific other cards could be played now. And when I mean broken I'll use the simple example of gearfied and the guardian equipment sword that returns to your hand when destroyed in the magical library exodia deck to draw your entire deck. (Yeah I know its not the best example but it's the top one on my head.) And that cards been banned since release basically. This would add diversity into the meta or many cards are limited to 2 unless you specifically need them for a extra deck summon like ultimate blue eyes. Idk, probably a bad idea.

Cards like Super Poly are more than fair in a game where the turn 1 player can special summon 14 times and end on a board of multiple omni-negates so that the turn 2 player just doesn't get to play the game after watching their opponent play solitaire for 10+ mins.

Honorary mention to Skill Drain, shutting off entire boards and turns with a single flip, all while in the current year people no longer run consistent (non-monster effect-based) removal like MST, instead opting for a single Feather Duster. From a time where Attack actually still mattered more than effects.

I think the best way to look at some of these older cards and even some of these newer ones is to read them and see what ISN'T on the effect. For example, Pot of Greed. It isn't broken because it let's you draw 2 cards (supposedly), it's broken because ALL it does is draw 2. Not draw 2 then discard or banish something, not draw 2 but locks you out of summoning or attacking, not draw 2 but you can't draw anymore, not return a specific kind of card(s) back into the main deck or gy then draw 2, and especially no "you can only activate/use the effect of pot of greed once per turn/duel". It's just draw 2. A lot of cards that are considered broken are like that. Would you all consider Baroness a good card if it had the same summon requirements as Crystal Wing? If DPE couldn't bring itself back or the monster summoned by it's effect got banished when it left the field, would you all still tech the engine in? If Halq locked you into synchro summoning for the rest of the turn you used either effect, would it be banned in 3 different formats? If Verte needed 2 predaplant monster to make, how many decks would run it? Look at Firewall Dragon. The thing needed to be errata'd to include extra verbiage before they decided to unban it.

The reasoning on Verte could be related to Goyo Guardian. Goyo was a purely generic Level 6 Synchro with ridiculous stats and an equally ridiculous effect. Changing it to not being generic got it unbanned and it fell out of favour. Halq locking you into Synchro summons might be enough for it to come back.

Point I'd say about yugioh is that it, as a game, uses a lot of nastalgia bait. There is a reason why Dark Magician and Blue-eyes are put on everything, because people keep buying them. Heck even the next set has got people excited for Blackwings, and there are a ton of prepetually rogue decks that have strong followings. You loose a lot of that with set rotations.

I think painful choice and graceful charity are the earliest examples of this issue. Both cards are not even a +1. But there was little to no value in setting up your graveyard when those cards where released. Just a few sets later and we have tons of graveyard effects which synergoz way to good with both cards.

@@ShiningJudgment666 Oh really ? I had pretty much no access to internet back in the day. Thats really interesting. Graceful was just a cool draw card that could set up a nice call of the haunted. That pretty much everything we did with it. I traded 3 Graceful charities for a DD Warrior Lady, an exiled force and something else because most people didn't value the card. (This was considered a bad trade for them back then, because we all had access to lady and exiled, because of the structure decks, while graceful was quite rare in my social circle.

Buster blader deck, especially the EX lock Whelp aged very well into these days. especially after support like buster dragon, prologue, memories and link whlep the locking became fairly consistent and most of tge modern decks get stopped pretty strongly. Especially for a classic deck like Buster Blader.

You can name any token generator that isn't a once per turn like level eater and cards that lock special summoning such as jowgen, the barrier statues and vanity's fiend, these cards became broken due to a new mechanic and to the fast pace of the game

MST being heavily played for 15-18 years shows how much older cards with no restrictions in have aged like fine wine in the power department. Original CED is actually unplayable in modern Yugioh, not because it’s bad, but because it’s unhealthy for the game.

two good examples are appointer of the red lotus and artifact scythe appointer is pretty self explanatory but believe it or not, artifact scythe wasn't very good in HAT format at all, even upon revisitation where cards like cardcar d, archfiend's oath or nimble angler and to a lesser extent call of the haunted and double cyclone were found to be a lot better than people thought, scythe is now the new player to the format trap, because in most situations moralltach just does a lot more. and it wasn't played much until korey mcduffie made scythe control.

There was a card I was thinking of mid video but forgot it, but Konami releasing a set that's like half errataed reprints would probably be really healthy. Less oppressive/easier to remove skill drain since they won't ban it again, weaken Maxx C to only apply to bulkier monsters or smthn.

Dolkka and Laggia: Dinos best deck. (I know Dinosmasher's Fury is 2017, but look how long it's been playable in reference to how long it's been legal.) Imperial Order: was banned, came off for 5 years, then banned again. Chaos monsters: 2004 (CED, BLS, Sorc). 2012 (Dragons Collide). 2013 (Shadow Specters released baby Chaos Dragons). 2018 (ThunDra and Levineer). 2019 (Seyfert and Space). BLS now and again sees that 1 person playing it as a tech card (yes, lower levels of play, but the fact that it does). HEROes: Stratos. Dark Law. HERO Beat. DAD Turbo/Tele-DAD. Modern HERO decks.

At the moment in master duel I'd say Imperial Iron Wall showing up again as way to deal with many of the top decks banish happy cards is neat. Dunno how strong it was in 2008 but it's finding a use now

Imperial Iron Wall was a bit of an anti-floodgate card so it definitely had use. Macro Cosmos and Dimensional Fissure were both at 3 back then. It was also an OTK enabler which bypassed the drawbacks on cards like Quillbolt Hedgehog and Dark Magician of Chaos so you could do endless loops with them.

Skull invitation. I recently played a goat format feind deck that ran 2 And I was luckily playing my odd eyes which significantly effected the amount of cards going to the GY otherwise I probably would have lost! 300 lp every time a card goes to the graveyard in today's game is just mental. It will burnout most decks tbf

Looking back I find it funny how the GX Anime unintentionally predicted how powerful Super Polymerization would be. It was hyped up in the anime to be this super powerful card the protagonists had to keep from Yubel when in reality it wasn’t that great. Enter modern Yu-Gi-Oh and now the card is absolutely bonkers. Crazy how the anime unintentionally predicted physical card game success.

There's cards that, as you said, "aged like fine wine". Then there's Painful Choice which just...I can't even begin to think of a comparison. If Super Poly "aged like fine wine", Painful Choice is the stash of 350 year old bottles of rum that a pirate buried on some island in the 1700's and it just got discovered.

Heavy Storm I felt was a somewhat controversial ban when it happened (to keep back-row heavy decks in check somewhat in a format where Harpie's Feather Duster was banned) but I can see why it ended up banned now (turning off your own floodgates while wiping your opponent's backrow).

Super poly is crazy but it's the player bases fault. Almost every fusion has to be generic to an extent because nobody will play non generic cards so they have to make super poly targets or give up making fusions.

The easiest solution to most of Yugioh's problems is just implementing multiple formats. The formats with the biggest card pools in MTG, vintage and legacy, are similar to Yugioh in speed. Even modern has decks that can consistently win on turn three or four. Then you have formats like standard and pioneer where games can easily last 10 or 20 turns.

I think super poly is necessary though because it punishes players who over commit to their board and think they’re invincible. Also going 2nd in Yugioh is probably the only card game where you are at a disadvantage you need all the help you can get. People cry just because their unstoppable board Isn’t so unstoppable if you can’t handle that then go play another card game. Super Poly is not a problematic card like mystic mine and artifact scythe are where they literally take away an actual game mechanic

I still think its funny we live in an era where dark hole is at 3, raigenki is at 3, torrential is 3, cyber jar, sanga, witch of the Black Forest, BLS, Envoy of the End, Harpies feather duster and even Friggin Yata Garasu; yet many players aren't running them or seek out their equivalents.

Some of those cards have had erratas so it's not much of a milestone in the case of Sangan, Witch and CED. Yata is a bit harder to lock your opponent down since the CED Yata lock is literally unplayable because of said erratas, the Phantom of Chaos Norleras top-deck version is way too inconsistent (have to run bricks and top-decking cards) and therefore unplayable and cards that make the opponent discard that aren't banned are rare. The rest are just victims of power creep (BLS has a Link monster re-train which is better for multiple reasons) though Harpie's Feather Duster is commonly side decked.
