This is a re-upload due to some copyright and content issues I couldn't resolve. All that's really changed is the end track!

Still my First Pick for when I am asked what my favorite movie is. Was very happy to see the 20th Anniversary in Theaters.

I'm from Europe, eastern to be more precise, and a movie buff all my life. Seen probably hundreds of asian movies, yet Oldboy is a a knockout. I was watching japanese cinema for some years(Kurosawa is in the cinematic Pantheon) yet this movie opened another door, into korean cinema. I liked it so much, that i watched almost all of Chan park wook's movies, and Choi min sik"s too. From this actor i recommend Failan(Pairan), Painted Fire, New World,I saw the devil-that's from the top of my memory. Btw, i have seen that you dipped your toes in Hong Kong movies, what do you think of Johnnie To?! If there is one director from East Asia that's underrated,i think it's him. His movies are stylish, well written, well edited too. I like him more than John Woo,personally. Throwdown for example is a little gem in terms of angles, editing and choreography. Election 1,2 are fantastic triad dramas, The Mission is a gripping minimalistic action movie, PTU is a somewhat neo-noir nocturnal stroll through HK, Breaking News is a media war between robbers and cops(with a fantastic action one take intro that lasts a few minutes),Exiled is a cool brotherly gangster flick set in eyecatching Macao, and so on... P.s: yeah,i agree with the Oldboy remake-remakes are such a lazy, hubristic move that i reject them instantly,in principle. The only remake that i enjoy is The departed. I have seen Internal Affairs afterwards, and i think the Departed is better.

I’m a big fan of I Saw the Devil, caught it in theatres when I was way too young for it - I’ve seen New World, but I’ll add Failan and Painted Fire to my list too. I love Johnnie To! Big fan of all the films you mentioned. I’ve done a video on Breaking News for this channel, and I’ve also cut video essays for the bonus features of the recent Chameleon Films blu-ray releases of Breaking News, Exiled and Election I & II. I think they put together the best looking and sounding home releases of those films yet, and they worked really hard on the translation/subtitles too. I also agree with you on The Departed being one of the few fantastic remakes out there, I love that film. It takes such a bold, different approach to the story and changes some key plot elements for the better. That said, I personally think Infernal Affairs II is the strongest of the original trilogy. Badass supporting performance from Francis Ng in a Michael Corleone mode!
