Don't want to touch your new radio with a soldering iron?. Have a friend handy (two person job) Removing the top and bottom covers is easy. The front control panel has no screws and simply unclips. removing the internal plate is as easy as 8 Philips head screws, there are no wires that require disconnecting the internal plate and control head can be moved far enough away to perform this mod. Hold a fine point pair of tweezers on both contacts that would normally be soldered together (other videos show the soldering procedure) and reset the radio. This works, it fools the CPU and it remains. The only time it does not remain is if or when you do a firmware update. Check for current firmware first. I found this on a forum and no where else, tried it and it works. No loss of functions and no internal butchering.

Brent McCarron Does not Work!
@marcteigh86333 жыл бұрын
@@mathieujanssen312 It does - but one step was missed out. After bridging temporarily, you then need the second person (this is why you need two) to then do a complete RESET (hold FAST and LOCK while powering on) WHILE the tweezers are still in place. (As you would for the MARS mod), the radio then notes the state of the jumper and will retain it until you next do a RESET. I am in two minds on this "non-mod mod" however, as when you do it with an iron, the unit is OFF until you choose to power it back on. So unless you are careless AND do not sort out the solder-splash etc, then no harm is likely to happen. BUT with the tweezer mod, you need to power-on while holding the tweezers in place and ONLY shorting out the two correct pins. If you slip and make contact with other pads, things may get grim - and as the power is ON - there may be no going back. Although it *seems* a safer mod, I am not convinced that it is so. As VERY little current needs to flow here, if you are nervous about using a soldering iron, you could just apply a "dot" of conductive paint with a cocktail stick (the type you repair heated rear windows with). If you mess up, you wipe clean and start again. Only when you are happy, do you then power up. Applying a "dot" of conductive paint over the contacts is perhaps the safest and simplest. OR give your friendly rig doctor £20 while he does the mod for you in twenty minutes :)

Even after all this time, The wide banding of this radio still seems to be a well guarded secret, The only hint I have heard is that the only way to open up the vhf/uhf portion is somewhere in the firmware and Yaesu will not divulge that information. With this radio being out as long as it has been now I'm surprised someone has not come up with a custom firmware or a software way to open up the vhf/uhf side. The fact that it can not be opened up on that portion is the only reason I'm buying the IC-7300 instead and just using my 7900R/E that is opended as my vhf/uhf base. Wonder if anyone else has not purchased this radio for the exact same reason. Yaesu may want to think about that. 73's Thanks for the video N0MLP

Crap… I was just going to buy one and found this out. I only have radios for emergency purposes and GMRS is a must as it will likely be used widely during a crisis. FCC has really missed the point. I have a FT5D ht which CAN be made to work on GMRS and FRS and I have GMRS radios that I transmit on during “peacetime”, but if I spend a grand on a Yaesu I have to also carry around a CB and a GMRS to relay emergency traffic during a crisis? Thank God for the CHINESE who make their junk modifiable. The FCC needs to wake up. Radios are like guns. There are millions with guns who will never use them for anything but good and only a tiny percentage who use them in crime. Someday someone might really need a “good guy” with a gun, and someday the USA might need some good guys with unlocked radios to monitor and communicate with the “Walmart Special “ FRS, GMRS, and CB channels since these radios outnumber the radios owned by licensed amateur hobbyists by ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE. I have a GMRS license and am about to take my HAM test, and I stay legal and respectful on the air, so if someone dies because I wasn’t carrying and monitoring 4 radios, then that blood is on the FCC and their sad ham followers who think they are so damned cool and official. Guess what? The real bad guys burn down cities and keeping the guy with a $1000+ radio from transmitting out of band is a concern that NOBODY is going to care about during SHTF and almost nobody cares about NOW since it is so rare. 1 991 sale deleted. Jed, many thanks from Australia for this one. I purchased a brand new FT 991A only 1 year ago. What you have shown is totally applicable and works with the Ft 991A. Antenna tuner goes ok. I only tried the 27 Megs band and is a total winner. Well, 27 Mhz is not far from 28, hence the PA will have the dynamic range. The tuner may have its limitations, I am guessing but you can always use an external MFJ 969, as I have one, since the variable inductor and the rest will tackle a gigantic range, just by its own inception. The built in antenna tuner will work when the shifts ( - or + ) may be confined to certain percentage of deviation from the main bands (ham) that has been designed for. Anyway, I am not an expert but tuned circuits, in the end, depending on how they are designed and built have not infinite coverage, I think ? VK2CRB ( ex LU1BBG)

1. Can you tune (internal or external tuner) when using an extended range frequency in the service mode?2. Does this work with the North American version of the FT-991 (Can another user check theirs)?
@oldcorvus8 жыл бұрын
I have tried the internal tuner on my European FT991 on 13.800Mhz and 55Mhz and it performed ok. Yaesu do not guarantee full spec performance outside normal frequency allocations so there may be some frequencies that will be difficult to tune. I think it is reasonable to assume that the service mode is common to all versions.
@w.rustylane5650 Жыл бұрын
@@oldcorvus I have the MARS mod done and the tuner works fine on 11 meters. The antenna tuner inside of the 991(a) will tune any frequency below 55 MHz as long as the antenna is somewhat resonate, i.e., SWR 3:1 or lower. It's not the job of the tuner to make your antenna resonate. As long as it's close the antenna tuner will do its job. I have an Antron 99 that I use on both 10 and 11 meters and on 11 meters without any tuner will return a 1.5:1 every time. Since the antenna is close to resonate on 10 meters, the internal tuner will match the antenna. Antenna tuners are not really antenna tuners per se. They just match the transmitter to antenna and some power is lost in the match. W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee

That is an unusual allocation, TV frequencies in most parts of the World, and precisely the reason why it is not economic for RF modules covering this range to be included in Amateur equipment. If the regulations are like those in the UK (446 allocation), you could argue it was a shrewd move on the part of the regulatory authority to ensure that only type approved equipment is used on those channels. That is not the proper way to do it. You NEVER keep your radio in the service mode. Please don't give misinformation when you don't know what your doing.
