400 Legend Overview

I have a Ruger Gen II 400 Legend (I also own a Ruger 350 Legend). The 400 Legend packs a thump. Not quite the thump the 450 Bushmaster that I got rid of, but yeah, it's a easy thump lol. First shot deer hunting this season with the 400 Legend, dropped a nice buck in his tracks at 87 yards (shooting to the 220 grain). Nex shot with it, took out a BIG doe management Nanny, at 105 yds (Also took a buck with the 350 Legend). The areas on this particular part of the property don't require long range capabilities. Inside the woods with maybe a long shot of 120 yards. After 150 yards, that heavy bullet of the 400 Legend drops about 5 inches. Great for anything less than 150 yards..

I was waiting for the 400 legend but there just weren’t that many rifles or ammo out yet and I needed it for this deer season. I went with the 350 legend in a Winchester xpr and I really love it. 400 seems cool but for my needs in PA, I think I’ll do just fine with the 350 legend. Hopefully I will bag one with it this year. I have been waiting nine months for a Ruger Predator... I have 10boxes of smmo. Dies and three bullet molds!! I even have bases n Rings snd a scope!!! NO GUN!! Grrr

I use a .350 Legend for deer in Ohio and am interested in the .400 Legend, but the rifle and ammo selection, especially in AR rifles, is limited right now. One of the attractions of the .350 is how easy it is to fit into an AR platform because of its similarity to the .223, but that doesn’t seem to be happening with the .400.

I have both, I have taken deer and hogs with both. My humble opinion is both are 200 yards or less rounds. Past 200 on game you will be disappointed. It can be done and probably is but I just don't think it's ethical. Inside 200 you will be happy.

WOAH someone reasonable that doesn't say it is good to 350 yards?? I have a 350 and it is a great cartridge for most hunters in the usa where shots are within 200

Really interested in this caliber but some manufacturers need to buy in and start making more offerings otherwise it'll never take off.

Allen, I used to live in NE Ohio. I am not a hunter, but I am curious why the state only allows straight walled cartridges for hunting?

High powers travel further. I can reach out 6-800 yards with a 308. 250 with my 350

I've been wanting a straight wall, 350 Legend is at the bottom, 450 Bushmaster is at the top, and 400 Legend would be perfect, the problem with it for me is, limited ammo makers, what if the rifle I have just doesn't like the ammo? I'm in no rush maybe some more ammo makers make the 400 Legend

I live in Iowa. Instead of all this 350, 450, 400 stuff, I'm just waiting until they allow 300 BLK, which I already own.

Are these bolt guns only? Henry make levers chambered in 350 or 400?

350 and 400 Legend are not rimmed cartridges and would not work well in a traditional tube fed lever gun. Henry could technically adapt these calibers to their Long Ranger model, which uses a flush fit box magazine. Another problem that makes it unlikely for Henry to adapt a 350/400 Legend is that it would undercut their 360 Buckhammer rifles.

as in why they developed these rounds? in some states such as Iowa where I live you can't use a high powered rifle. For a long time it was a shotgun and slugs only. a few years ago they allowed these straight walled cartridges'. I'm hoping in the future they will allow high powered rifles but for the time being we are only allowed to use these.

Seems to me so much of the hype on these cartridges is just marketing. We've had 375 win. - 444 marlin - 45/70 almost a hundred years. These gun experts will tell you these cartridges are absolute. Go figure.🤨

Well for some states like mi. The 350 legend and 450 bushmaster are legal for deer where the others are not. So there is a market there, plus a lot of AR guys like to be able to have more oomph if needed.

350/400 is just more practical for more people. Lower cost and recoil than any of the calibers you mentioned.

You do have a point I forgot there's case length issues in some states. I think people get to hung up on small things, shot placement and improving your woods craft is more important.
